Defining Community Projects
Today we are going to take a look at what exactly a Community Project is and hopefully dispell some misconceptions about them. Our group CRCommunityProjects has a great blurb explaining what Community Projects are that I'd like to quote here:
A community project is a project or contest that is designed by community members to promote a positive, supportive environment here on deviantART. Community projects build community spirit and help all of us to grow as artists and as individuals. They have specific goals and serve to bring people together. These projects are supportive of artists and of artistic growth and provide a stepping-stone to help people achieve their goals.
Community projects can be large or small. They may span multiple galleries and media, or they may be focused on just one. They could even be focused on forums or chats!
I think the blurb above gives a great general overview of what a community project is and does. But for the sake of being thorough I'll take a moment to go a bit more in depth.
At the Core
At the core, community projects will bring community members together with a unified goal/idea/concept which make a positive impact on the community as a whole.
Contests Vs Community Projects
There has been some debate on whether or not Contests are Community Projects and I believe there are some important things to consider when looking at this.
Does your Contest bring the community together and move it towards a positive goal for the community?
Certainly most contests are community oriented, I certainly can't recall seeing a contest that was not community oriented. But just because your Contest is community oriented doesn't automatically make it a Community Project. Does your contest make a positive impact on the community? Does it move it forward in a positive way? If you answered yes to either of those questions, your Contest may also be considered a Community Project.
Is your Contest for the entire Community, or just a sub group?
If your contest is open to the entire community and everyone is welcome to join it may be considered a community Project. However if you are only allowing members of a specific group to enter we'd generally not consider it a Community Project.
Either way, if you are ever unsure if your contest meets the standards for a Community Project you are always more than welcome to send us a note at CRCommunityProjects or note your friendly Community Projects Volunteer for further clarification.
