Literature Text

And they said it’s beautiful.
It is, is it?
I saw one eaten before, turned to sludge and licked off the sidewalk
But I never had the chance to try for myself
No, it doesn't sound beautiful; you’d think it would but actually
It sounds like teeth and gas masks on a Thursday morning
It smells like rooms. It doesn't taste of anything,
Watching someone else sink their teeth into a childlike-
All legs and scabby hearts
-thing that I want to be.
It doesn't look right either.
Have you ever seen someone pivot, twisting on one leg,
Then jump and miss the first stair
So they hang onto the rail, and breathless,
Run through the set of names they have to ask for
And you probably wanted to call for us, didn't you?
They don’t have one of those.
I like the way they don’t even consider trying to set their feet down
Because they know we want to evade them-
They just fall
And the next day, most of us will say,
It was beautiful, wasn't it?
People out in the grunt-grown fields, they call it green but really
It’s just as green as we are. Which is a lot.
Those people say they could hear.
That’s what they said last time too
But this time they agreed with me,
This time they said we were silent…
