Night Terrors

On All Hallows Eve,
when the veil between words is at it's thinnest,
the ghouls and ghosts come out to play.
All the things that scared us as children;
the bogeyman;
the monster under the bed,
these become real for one night and one night only.
These are the childish nightmares which kept us awake
if the closet door wasn't shut properly
when the lights went out.
These days, the terrors are different,
we no longer fear these beings
because we believe that we imagined them in our youth.
Some of us, though, never stopped believing,
some of us realize that
while the monsters were never physical,
they were real.
They live inside us all our lives,
lurking in the corners of our eyes,
where we occasionally catch a glimpse,
in just a fleeting moment of insecurity,
of the horrors from our past,
the nightmares from our childhood;
of the Devil inside.
