Out of the Lava Lamp

Martha und Amelia were sitting in fast food restaurant in a small town near Seattle. About half an hour earlier, Martha had teleported them from London, as one of Martha's victims lived nearby. Three years ago, Jennifer, a girl from this place, became Martha's second master. Jennifer had promised Martha to use her last wish to turn Martha back into a human. But then she broke her word and used it for herself. Back then, Martha became very angry at Jennifer and twisted her wish by locking the girl inside a lava lamp. Back then, Martha would have done anything to become human again. It was a different Martha back then.

Today, Martha had a more mature point of view on being a genie and being a human. David had given her a free wish she hadn't used yet, so she could turn back into a human, if she wished to. But by now, Martha wasn't sure about that anymore. Before she would use that wish, Martha planned on cleaning her consciousness. That meant, she went on a journey with her friend Amelia Maus to find all her victims. If her victims deserved it, Amelia would make some wishes to restore the victims.

This voyage now brought both to Washington state. They quickly found the house, where Jennifer, her parents and her sister Cindy lived. Since Cindy was involved in that last wish too, Martha wanted to talk to Cindy first, before freeing Jennifer from the lamp. But Cindy was at school right now, so Martha and Amelia went to a fast food restaurant to wait.

"Amelia, there's something I want you to ask." Martha began. "Back in London, you mentioned that you actively remember that you had been a mouse before. Wouldn't it be better to let that knowledge go and truly become human?"

"Better? Maybe easier. And would I really become truly human? I doubt that. I'd rather become something like Roisin. She might think of herself as a harp, but that's not what she really is. I think when a transformed person loses its connection to its old personality, that personality dies. And I don't want that to happen, even my old personality was that of a mouse."

"I've never seen it that way." Martha became very thoughtful. The way Amelia saw it, Martha had actually killed many of her victims in the long run. But then, Amelia managed to keep that little mouse alive inside herself. So it is rather the victims' choice whether they let their old personality die or not. But can an animal understand the effects on the mind? Martha would definitely have to think about that. Although, at the moment, she'd rather change the topic. "Say, Amelia, if you and David will have children. Will you tell them what you've been originally?"

Now Amelia had to think for a moment. "I haven't thought about that yet. My children will be human from the start. So maybe they don't need to know about my past as a mouse. But then, if they inherit my funny ears and nose and ask me, what shall is say? Geez, Martha that was a hard question."

"And so was yours." Martha looked at the clock. "Wanna have another coffee? It's still half an hour left before school's out."

"Sounds good to me. I'll get us some" Amelia said.

Sometime later, Martha and Amelia watched a school bus stop and drop a group of children in the neighborhood. "Which one is Cindy?" Amelia asked.

Martha took a close look on the girls. "Yes... It's that one over there. I saw her once after I had granted Jennifer's final wish. But that's her." Martha pointed to an Asian girl chatting with two friends.
When her friends had left, Martha and Amelia approached the girl. "Hello Cindy. My name is Martha and this is Amelia. We'd like to talk to you about your sister."

"My Sister? I have no sister." Cindy replied.

"Are you sure?" Martha asked. "Don't you have a sister named Jennifer who lives insde a Lava lamp?"

Cindy was shocked. "How do you know about that? I told nobody about her."

"Because I'm the genie who locked your sister in that lava lamp." Martha explained.

"Stop kidding me. Genies only exist in fairy tales." Cindy said.

"Let me show you!" Martha looked around to make sure nobody else was around. Then she changed her skin to green and her clothes to her genie attire.

"Wow, you are a... a...." Cindy stammered.

"I'm a genie. Can we go and see your sister now?" Martha asked.

Cindy was totally astonished. "Sure, but... Can you teleport yourself to my room? I'll be with you in a few minutes. My parents you know..."

"Ok, but why wouldn't you want me to see your parents?" Martha asked.

"Because she didn't tell them what happened to her sister." Amelia explained.

Cindy went pale. "How do you know?"

"You said it yourself: You didn't tell anybody." Amelia deduced.

Cindy nodded. "Ok, I'll go home now. You can teleport to my room. I'll be there with you in a moment. "

As the girl skipped way, Amelia turned to Martha. "Now I worry if Jennifer has survived the last years at all. Martha, I wish that you teleport us to Cindy's room."

"I know what you mean. There's only one way to find out. Wish granted." Martha blinked and both women disappeared.
