Black & White

Today, David Schnürli, the new executive manager of the Grandhotel, had to deal with a rather unpleasant visitor: The authorities had send an inspector to check if the hotel was employing illegal workers. Of course, David only hired staff that had all necessary papers. But it was always an annoyance and it always required some paperwork.
The inspector, a pedantic man called Oberle, bruised the employees files for several minutes. Finally he found something: "This work permission for Svetlana Petroskaya has expired. May I ask where this woman is now?"

David took the file and pointed as slip of paper to the inspector. "As you can see, she has quitted her job last week. Just before her working permission expired."

Herr Oberle studied the paper. "How convenient" He put a mark in his laptop. "Do you know where she is now?"

David shook his head. "I have no idea, sir. After she quitted, I haven't seen her again. Maybe she returned to her family?"

"Of course, of course! I'm sure she's not somewhere around working in the hotel." Herr Oberle said. "Let's see who else we got here. Ah yes. Jana Schultze."

"She started working here one year ago. And all her papers are in perfect order." David pointed out the necessary sheets. Slowly, this guy was going on his nerves.

"Martha de Santos. From Brazil. She started working for you three years ago. And I see her working permission has just expired."

"Are you sure?" David asked. He looked at the paper. Herr Oberle was right. David was so used to Martha that he completely forgot that the rules applied to a genie too.

"I'm afraid I have to report this, Herr Sprüngli."

"It's only two weeks ago. I'm sure Martha had forgotten to extend the permission. If you give me until the end of the week, we can surely sort this out." David plead.

"You know the rules. Of course I have to double check the records, but I'm afraid, you'll have to face the fine. And Fräulein de Santos will face legal actions."

"Ok, if that's the way it is." David said. "Anyone else I will be fined for?"

"We'll see." While Herr Oberle was browsing more files, David turned was and texted a message on his smartphone.

At the other side of the world, Amelia and Martha were about to head off to find Martha's next victim. Suddenly, Amelia received a message on her phone. "It's from David. Martha did you forget to extend your working permission?"

"My working permission? I didn't know I need one as a genie." Martha said.

"Well officially, you are a foreigner. You need the proper paperwork." Amelia explained.

"Sorry, I forgot!" a seemingly annoyed Martha said. "What shall I do now?"

"David writes that you will be in trouble one the inspector will check with the records in his office."

"The records in his office? How about I change them so everything is in order?" Martha said. "All I need is someone to wish for it."

Amelia rolled her eyes. "Ok, ok, I'll do it. But you have to think about these things by yourself in the future." Amelia took a deep breath. "I wish that you had extended your working permission in time and that the records at the administration will show that."

"You wish is granted." Martha blinked.

"And now, I wish that you teleport us back home to Switzerland." Amelia said. Another blink and both girls teleported away."

Back in Switzerland. Mr. Oberle's investigation was comming to an end. "That leaves only Amelia Maus." he said.

"What about her?" David asked. "She's a Swiss citizen, so she doesn't need a working permission."

"It seems so..." Herr Oberle said, though he sounded not happy about that.

In that moment, the door to the office opened and Amelia and Martha walked in. "Hello David. We are back." Amelia said and rushed towards her fiancée.

"Welcome back." David said. He embraced Amelia and both kissed. "Amelia, Martha, may I introduce: Herr Oberle from the authorities. Martha de Santos and Amelia Maus, my fiancée."

"Good day." Herr Oberle briefly said. Then he turned to Martha. "So you are Martha de Santos? I see that you working permission has inspired, which make you an illegal immigrant."

"Oh no!" Martha feigned surprise. "There must be a mistake. I had handed in the papers on time. Your records must be wrong."

"Then Mr. Sprüngli here is keeping very poor records." Herr Oberle angered David. "I'll tell you what you do: I'll check the records at the office. And if I don't find an extended permission, I'll make sure you will be sent back to where you belong." Next, Herr Oberle turned to Amelia. "And you must be Fräulein Maus."

"Is there something wrong with my papers too?" Amelia asked with a cold voice.

"You may be born here but had your parents born here too?" Herr Oberle asked. "Just want to make sure you are a real Eidgenossin!"

Now Amelia was furious. "Listen, Herr Oberle. My parents are none of your concern. They died when I was very young. So don't dare insulting my parents. And for your Eigenossin, that's so medieval." She gave him a stare as if she wanted to kill him.

"That's enough!" David interrupted. "If you have finished your work here, Herr Oberle, I urge you to leave my hotel immediately. And be assured that I will complain with your supervisors."

Herr Oberle put on a sarcastic mile. "Have a good day." In the door, he turned to Martha again. "I'll let you know about the records in the office." Then he left.

When the door was shut, Amelia couldn't hold it any longer. "Arrrgh! This asshole is going on my nerve! Martha how about we punish him with a wish?"

"No!" David intervened. He embraced his fiancée "Amelia, I know exactly how you feel. I'm furious about him too. But you can't wish him into something else."

"But David..." Amelia objected.

"Amelia. Think about the reputation of our hotel. If he disappears here, the police will come and investigate. Please, no vengeful magic in the hotel, ok?" Amelia moved away from David.

"Alright. No vengeful magic inside the hotel." Martha suddenly said. "David, we just returned from the USA. If you don't mind, we'll go to Amelia's place now. Will you come, Amelia?"

Amelia nodded. As both girls were about to leave the office, David spoke again. "Don't worry Amelia. I'll complain to his supervisors. He won't get away with that. If you want, I can come over to your place this evening. And you tell me how the trip to America went."

Amelia and Martha walked through the streets to Amelia's flat. Both were still extremely angry about the inspectors behavior.

"Say, Matha, did you ever had problems with such racist remarks?" Amelia asked.

"Since I arrived here? Not so much."

"I guess your skin is rather light, like a European's?"

"Sure. There are many green-skinned people walking around here..." Martha joked. "Say, would want to change your appearance?"

"Certainly not. I am what I am, and David loves me for that. I'm just annoyed every time I face such racist assholes." Amelia said. "This wasn't the first time today."

"I know. I remember those two racists I turned into black people." Martha snickered.

"Yeah, that was a fitting punishment." Amelia laughed. "Sometimes I wonder how they cope with their new races."

"Wanna visit them?" Martha proposed. "If the learned their lesson, we can turn them back, if like."

"Maybe..." Amelia tergiversated. "We can have look... Can you teleport us there?"

"Your wish is granted." Martha blinked.
