Leopold the Handsome
He followed his Father Ernest as Margrave of Austria. During the Investiture Controversy he took the side of the pope and was therefore dethroned by the emperor. Leopold’s place was shortly taken by Vratislaw of Bohemia. However he managed to regain his power at the cost of some territory in southern Moravia.
Leopold was married to Ida of Formbach-Ratelnberg. She was said to be one of the most beautiful women of her time. In 1101 she joined the crusade, where she led her own army. They were ambushed at Heraclea Cybistra. Ida’s fate remains unknown. Some say she was killed in the fight. However the Historian Albert of Aachen reports she was captured and sold as a harem slave.
