February body motion study from the SpeedpaintStudies group:
►What did you learn from doing this study?
My poses are pretty stiff. I should probably do more gesture drawing and negative space drawings.
I tried drawing all with an inital line of movement, I think this'll work better if I make it more a line of where the force or weight of the character is traveling through the pose instead.
►What did you find difficult?
I have a tendency to build characters based on the old spheres and rectangles method, it doesn't create very fluid poses, and I find it hard to keep things in proportion with, specially foreshortening.
The far left one I drew with just blocks of colour and adding and subtracting to that to build the form. I like this method best, but only any good for me when trying to closely copy a photo. The hands aren't well grounded, one is too low in the drawing.
The far right, and 2nd on the left, I did a gesture drawing first and painted over the top. I think this is more practical for sussing out poses, and creating them.
The 2nd from the right, I did a gesture, reverted to shapes for the strange tilt of the hips the pose made, coloured underneath then on top. I don't think it looks much stiffer in comparison, even though it was drawn that way. It has an overall tilt to the left I think though.
None are as fluid as I'd have liked to have gotten, so that's the main difficulty.
I also had a lot of trouble picking skin colours against the yellow background's one, against grey seemed easier for some reason. The first 3 are all in need of more red tone in the skin I think, so colour matching, as always, a difficulty.
►What area's do you wish to improve on?
Gesture drawing, drawing overall form more fluidly instead of building blocks. And weighting a figure. I think fluidity has a lot to do with weight and force. The force of the movement and the weight of where they're pressed against the ground. I think taking more time to identifying those before I draw might be beneficial, or worth a bit of experimenting with at least.
