Darkness.

With a groan, McKenna slowly opened her eyes. Why was she laying on the ground? She brought her right hand down to push herself up and cried out as her body screamed in protest. Mewling in pain, she rolled over onto her back and stared up at the night sky. What the hell happened? In the distance, hooves thundered across the ground, coupled with the low hum of a hundred thousand voices.

“McKenna?” a soft male voice whispered.

Using slow, careful motions, McKenna rolled her head to the right. A familiar black tabby Nordanner hovered over her, his blue eyes wide and frightened. “Theron?” she croaked. The colt bobbed his head and nosed her gently. “Is … anything broken?” she asked the colt. She couldn’t feel anything, other than a deep-bone throb of pain throughout most of her body. Then again, it might take a while for the shock to wear off—if that’s what she had.

Theron blinked. “I … I don’t think so.” His head lifted and he looked down the length of her body. “Your legs look straight …” The colt trailed off, brow ridges knitting in concern. “McKenna … Hal …”

Hal!

It all came rushing back—the leap, the ground shaking and causing Hal to lose his footing. They’d gone down and she’d apparently blacked out. “Hal!” McKenna struggled to rise, clenching her teeth against the pain. She rolled over and saw Hal lying on his side nearby, pieces of his shattered antlers strewn all around them like driftwood. His side rose and fell, up and down, in a steady rhythm. One ear turned towards the sound of her voice.

“Mac?”

On her hands and knees, McKenna crawled over to the fallen colt and wrapped her arms around his neck. Hot, wet tears fell from her eyes and splattered over his dust-covered coat.

“I broke my antlers, Mac,” Hal murmured despondently.

McKenna stifled a giggle, pressing her knuckles to her mouth. Hal hated those antlers from the moment they appeared. Now he was lamenting their loss. “They’ll grow back, sweetheart,” she told him. They always grew back. She used her other hand to stroke the bay roan colt’s cheek soothingly.

“I’ll look stupid without them,” he continued, rolling an eye to look up at Theron. The other colt hovered nearby, ears askew. “Don’t I look stupid?”

Theron looked startled, as if he hadn’t expected Hal to ask his opinion. “Uhm, no?”

“See?” McKenna assured him. “Even Theron thinks you look fine.” She glanced over Hal’s body, checking for signs of injury. Every single one of his legs looked, to use Theron’s vernacular, straight. “Do you hurt anywhere?”

Hal blinked, then rolled over. McKenna scooted back as the colt got to his feet. There were grass and dirt stains up and down his sides and on his legs, but other than a few scrapes from some pebbles, he seemed to be whole. Theron stood back while Hal shook himself vigorously.

McKenna sat back and pushed her hair out of her face. Glancing around, she saw that others were leaping the chasm, while still more were on the other side. “Theron?” The tabby colt’s ears snapped up at the sound of her voice. “Where’s Davydd?”

The colt pointed his muzzle down the length of the chasm. “Down there, helping. He told me to watch you.”

McKenna nodded absently. “Why don’t you go and see if he needs help? We’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” she told him gently. “Go on, Theron.”

“O-kay …” Ears rotating, Theron moved off slowly.

McKenna sighed. She could see their tent from here, collapsed as it were. All of their supplies and Hal’s tack were perched nearby. Maybe someone could sling them across the void? There was no way she’d ask Hal to jump across in his condition.

Hal padded up to her, pressing his leg against her shoulder. She leaned against him, glad for his presence.

“Mac?”

“Hm?”

“Where’s Kan?”
