Rebel's First Time over trot poles

... For the past two and a half weeks Lyra has just been free lunging Rebel, trying to gain his trust back. She had also been busy with Era, and with the first event of the summer season just a week away, she was very busy.

Lyra led Rebel into the arena, and hand walked him around once, allowing him to look at all the windows, which were open. Then she slipped off his halter, and walked over to the door. On the wall before the entrance to the arena sat a row of hooks. She carefully placed the halter, with lead attached, there, before checking that the arena door was closed, and latched properly. When she turned to look at Rebel he was standing at X, head slightly tilted, watching her. But the moment he saw her looking at him, he spun on his hindquarters, and pranced around, head held high. "You've got a lot of work to do with him," Rebecca called from the viewing lounge. Lyra grinned and looked up at her, "Nothin' good ever came easy." But the redhead merely shrugged, "Melody didn't take you this long." Lyra narrowed her eyes, "Different horse, different personalities. Anyway, you don't become a good trainer by only training horses who are easy to work with."

And Rebel was definitely not easy to work with. He was hard to catch, horrible to groom, and when you lead him, well, it's like herding cats. Cats who you had just stepped on. But Lyra liked a challenge, and she knew that once he was confident in her, they'd make a great team.

So she went through the normal routine, walk and trot each way, and if he offered to canter then he could. Watching him, Lyra noticed, he looked bored. 'I'll trick him,' she decided, and walked over to C, dropping one pole down. Then she walked back to the middle, and encouraged him to walk over it. He looked at it, then turned and tried to stalk away. "No," she told him, sending him back over it. He trotted at it, in a beautiful flowing trot. 'YES!' thought Lyra. She could picture him doing a huge, high kneed trot over.

Being the unpredictable rebel he was, he started to charge at it, and picked his feet up extra high as he cantered over it. Lyra sighed, but a small grin crept onto her face. At least he knew how to do canter poles now.
