Greetings from the Galaxy!

I hope you've been enjoying our group read of THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY by Douglas Adams.  As of today, we should all have read through chapter 13.

This journal will serve as a hub for discussion.  I'm going to leave y'all some questions to get you started, but feel free to leave your own questions and ideas in the comments.  But, remember, do not spoil anything beyond chapter 13 for other readers!

:new: SKIP TO THE BOTTOM FOR UPDATES ON PRIZES! :new:

But first!  Let's start off with some fan art that I mined from the "universe" of deviantART:

So Long and Thanks............ by DarthMater  Babel Fish by Gr8Gonzo  Vogon by edgar1975  Magrathea by monteirohq  Marvin the Paranoid Android Amigurumi by RTakeshi
Magrathea by microbot23    Week 28 - Babel Fish by danieljoelnewman

Now! Let's get to discussing!

  • Discussion Topic 1:

Douglas Adams writes in a style known as "satire." What is satirical about his novel?  Do you think there are any "points" he is trying to make about modern living (noting that this book was published in the 70s) while writing this sci fi adventure?

  • Discussion Topic 2:

How do you think the different characters compare to each other?  Is any one character a "foil" for another?  Do you think there are any characters that should have played a larger role than they do?  Or a smaller role?

  • Discussion Topic 3:

What do you enjoy or not enjoy about Douglas Adams' writing style?  This could cover anything from the type of grammar and syntax he uses in sentence structure to his sense of humor to the way he approaches the genre he's writing in.

  • Discussion Topic 4:

What are you curious about as we read the next half of the book?

Oh, did we forget to mention....INCENTIVES?!

The team will be  monitoring the discussion below (and the end-of-month chat) and we'll be making note of those who contribute more than average, be it by raising interesting points, participating in many facets of the discussion, or even creating fan art or a critical review of the piece (seriously, write a good review, the non-fiction gallery needs all the help it can get). Those who contribute the most and best at the end of the month will be rewarded. There will also be a "big bang" reward at the end of each six-month term. Stay tuned for details on those rewards!

ColferSet by PinkyMcCoversong

The fine folks at Disney-Hyperion are sending us some fantastic books by the hilarious author Eoin Colfer.  H2G2 and Douglas Adams aficionados may know him as the author who wrote a 6th companion book to the H2G2 series.  The rest of him know him for his ARTEMIS FOWL series, or perhaps one of his many other fantastic and funny titles for kids and adults. THIS MONTH'S TOP PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN EOIN COLFER'S NEW W.A.R.P. SERIES, along with some mystery swag from Disney-Hyperion.  A set of these books will also go into the prize bucket for our "big bang" reward to be doled out in December.  BIG BIG THANKS to Disney-Hyperion!  We think that H2G2 fans will love Eoin's style, and that these books make a great reward for those of you working to get the most out of Book Club.  SO GET TO IT!  Comment! Create! Review! We're watching.... :eyes:

That's it!

Now, discuss!  i'll be in there to moderate, but hopefully everyone will be having fantastic discussions anyway.  I can't wait to see what everyone has to say!  And don't forget, there will be a chat event to discuss the book as a whole taking place in the #CRLiterature room on June 29 at 1pm PST.  Let's make it a good one!

obviously Adams has much criticism on life as we know it though i'm sure i didn't get most of it. he has a very sarcastic view of people and the english culture.

every character gets a small portion of spot-light. this is a problem in my opinion because it helps to have one character to lead you through a story. in hitchhiker's it's impossible to even recognize a protagonist.

i absolutely love his style of writing and simultaneously absolutely detest it! it is amusing, insane (which i love), unique, clever, dull, pointless rambling. also a connection between certain parts doesn't exist. he skips to wholely unrelated and a "who cares" ramble every so often. also the story is lacking and doesn't move along.

well.. i just finished it all :ashamed: and i have seen the movie previously so what i wondered in that juncture i think, is how close is it going to be to the movie.
