Anime And Manga


The term Manga (漫画) is a japanese word referring to comics and catrooning. Mangas used to be created in Japan or by Japanese creators in the Japanese language. But today they are created by Mangakas for other countries in many languages.


In this article I will give you a short explaination about the different Manga genres.
I'm aware of 32 genres that are used in the Manga publishing industry. Each one of them have different targets to please our interests.


Manga genres


  • Action: It shows fighting, violence or any other form of aggressive behavior.
  • Adult: This manga often contains intense violence or erotic scenes.
  • Adventure: Most of the characters of this Manga go on trips or explore the world.
  • Comedy: This manga is used for entertainment: Amusing with ridiculous situations that make you laugh.
  • Doujinshi: Manga that was inspired by famous works already published.
  • Drama: Should conduct the readers to emotional feelings.
  • Ecchi: Lightly pornagraphic-themed manga.
  • Fantasy: Includes magic creatures, magicians, dream countries, etc.
  • Gender Bender: All about gender swap. From clothing of the opposite sex carry up to (usually unintentional) body swap and more.
  • Harem: In most Mangas that are marked with this genre, it's about a guy who has a lot of women around him or a woman with a lot of men around her.
  • Historica: Historically-themed stories or manga.
  • Horror: This genre is is for people who enjoy reading about creepy stories. Where most characters are getting killed as well.
  • Josei: Is drawn specifically for adult women. Most Mangas in the field of acting experience from working life, family, interpersonal relationships or stories about pets.
  • Magical girl: (A.k.a. mahou shoujo or majokko) is a genre that includes young girls who use magic.
  • Martial Arts: Aikido, Karate, Judo, Kendo. In this manga is treated the subject of martial arts.
  • Mature: Is not suitable for people under 18 years old. May be with violence, gore, pornocraphics or sexual contact.
  • Mecha: In most Manga is mostly about a fantastic, super modern element.
  • Mystery: Mangas where you uncover all the unsolved mysteries.
  • One Shot: Very short manga. In most cases no more than a chapter or a manga magazine.
  • Psychologica: Dealing with the human psyche.
  • Romance: These mangas are about love. The genre Romance linked to the Shoujo genre.
  • School Life: Playing in a school or campus.
  • Sci-fi: Short for Science Fction. They are about future, technology and space.
  • Seinen: The target group is mostly men aged 18 to 30 years.
  • Shoujo: Manga for girls. Revolves mostly about friendship and love.
  • Shoujo Ai: Is similar to Yuri. Only about young girls. (GirlxGirl)
  • Shounen: This manga originally written for boys. Mostly it comes to violence, so it is strongly linked to the genre of action and advanture.
  • Shounen Ai: Is similar to yaoi. Only about boys instead of men. (BoyxBoy)
  • Slice of Life: About normal people where something happens in their life that changes it basically.
  • Sports: This Manga primarily concerns Sports.
  • Yaoi: In Yaoi Manga it comes in terms with homosexual relationships. The erotic aspect is paramount. (MalexMale)
  • Yuri: The focus is on the love between women. (WomanxWoman)
