Description

Cambodia and Indonesia have an often over looked relationship.

The countries, at current, are improving their trade relations, and while Cambodia has been receiving more Indonesian visitors, they are more attracted to Angkor Wat than Phnom Penh. At current, the two countries are attempting to find a way around Cambodia’s difficulty in promoting and transporting goods. Their main trade goods are pharmaceuticals (Indonesia) and rice (Cambodia).

Moreover, Indonesia is entrusted with the tedious task of monitoring Cambodia and Thailand’s much disputed border which has been in dispute for many years. Indonesia plays peace keeper in the Cambodia-Thailand dispute over the Preah Vihear temple. Out of the two countries, Cambodia was the first to agree to such an arrangement, Thailand not responding initially due to a governmental change.

The two share similarities between temples (though Indonesia’s are theorized to be roughly 300 years older), and it is believed that Khmer architects were inspired by the Javanese.   There are also similarities in Khmer and Javanese dance, and suspected linkages in language (though linguists are still investigating). The two also share cultural ties brought to them by India.

Conflict:

The two countries maintained relations with one another as far back as roughly after the February of 707 in which the Khmer Kingdom, Chenla, experienced anarchic turmoil that resulted in it splitting into two realms: “Land Chenla” and “Water Chenla”.

While Land Chenla remained stable, Water Chenla came under constant attack by the Javanese (Indonesia) at sea. The Sailendra dynasty in Java eventually forced Water Chenla into vassal status, the last king of Water Chenla being executed in roughly 790 for offending a Javanese monarch. However, in a small battle that followed, a ruler of one of the smaller Khmer states located to the north of the Mekong Delta, Jayavarman II (a prince who lived in the court of Sailendra in Java), assumed the throne and liberated the Khmer people of what used to be Water Chenla as well as marked the start of the Angkor Era.

Subtracting the years that Water Chenla was under Javanese rule, Cambodia and Indonesia have had 1,212 years of good relations. :U
