This was written for the DARPG. Please do not read this if you are in any way going to be offended by a dog breeding story.  If you read it, I am going to assume you are not bothered by dog breeding stories, and if you are and still read it, that is your own decision.

A month prior to the time Raziyah was expected to go into heat, she came all the way to BC, Canada from her co-own home in Massachusetts. I usually co-own within 500 miles maximum but this home was a working home that wanted her badly for multiple reasons, but not to breed. They agreed to a co-ownership contract which allows me to breed her if I want to and feel she should be bred, but in my home and to the stud of my choice. The catch for this was that she was a free puppy except for shipping costs. She was raised with 5 children from puppyhood to adulthood; therefore, is very good with children, even though she is hyper and intense.

As soon as Raziyah got here, we started supplementaton big time (probiotics, raspberry leaf, Maca, medium chain triglycerides, and lots of fresh meats and bones) and a consistent, challenging exercise routine. I won't lie, she was a bit chubbier than I wanted her to be, so she was here basically to tone up, lose some fat, gain some muscle, and be as healthy as possible to give her the best chance to be impregnated when the time came.

Raziyah was prepared for breeding for about 43 days until the day of her breeding was to occur.

Raziyah is the daughter of our two imports and the beginning of the Raziel line, a completely new line in Fortezza that combines the farm, rustic type (sire) with a proven show type (dam) for lots of heterogeneity and to clean up the Fortezza type in some areas. Raziyah (Raziel x Azika) is conformed well and structured well but lacks the substance that my general line (Nikaro) definitely does not lack. This breeding will be the continuation of the Raziel line, as well as the continuation of the general line which I use to blend into my homogeneous pools.

I "sold" Raziyah as an older puppy to this family because I had a ton of stuff going on and at that moment, I wanted to see how she'd develop, but I felt she lacked substance and bone at that age, the very things I was hoping she wouldn't lack. She had the temperament for a working home and the family in Massachusetts saw her on my website and applied for her. She is now an IPOII female with multiple obedience titles and temperament certificates.

As the breeder, I paid for all of her health testing which included hips, elbows, shoulders, eyes, DNA, heart, thyroid, and Brucella. Her health test clearances at 27 months of age are as follows:

PennHIP hips 0.43/0.47
OFA Thyroid, Cardiac, Elbows Normal
CERF-Clear
CMR-Clear tested by OptiGen
Brucella-Negative
DJD Free/OCD Free

I consider her hips to be Good by OFA's standards. I prefer the mathematical hip rating of PennHIP, while some believe "BYBs" "hide" behind PennHIP. I believe both PennHIP and OFA are excellent choices, better than simply getting an x-ray and your vet saying they are "just fine."

....

Nikaro, the studmale, an approximately 120-lbs male at a nice 26" came home to Fortezza from his co-own home in Vancouver about 2 weeks before the breeding was to take place. During this time, he received similar treatment and nutrition loading, but the instructions to his owners were to supplement his diet with zinc and Maca for a few months. Zinc allows for better sperm health and motility, increasing male fertility, and Maca does similar things as well as improve how a dog feels in every day life and in stressful times, since he would be coming to Fortezza kennels and away from his home. It's important for dogs to feel relaxed. I have had experiences before where a male came here to breed and wouldn't mount because he was stressed, and the bitch wouldn't accept because she was nervous and the whole thing was just awful. Dietary supplementation is very helpful.

Nikaro is a beautiful male who, right off the bat, is very typical of the breed and represents the breed in a very positive light. His dam, Nikolani, is an outcross, but his sire, Lazario, is not. Paternally, his grandsire and great granddam are brother and sister, making him linebred on Zakhar 4-5-0-0, but Nikaro himself is an outcross as Nikolani and Lazario were unrelated. Not to be too confusing, but...

Nikaro's sister, Laznika, is the first HIC Corso in Fortezza, and his other sister, Fabiola, has done exceedingly well in conformation showing and family protection.

....

Raziyah's Ninth Day of Heat

"Corsos at hand!" I exclaimed with a slightly nervous but excited feeling in my gut, hoping the best for the first romp around with the two who were destined to be bred in the next two days. Raziyah was left unmuzzled, but I had her thick and wide red leather collar on, her leather GrabTab, a dominant dog collar, and a black harness on. Overdoing it, as far as being able to grab onto your dog when needed, does not exist when two hormonal, instinctive, large and powerful dogs are together. Nikaro had the same things on, and my friend who is a professional dog handler hand a muzzle and scissors handy if needed (for who knows what, really!).

My friend, Kasper, came from the studmale side of the kennels and I came from the side door of my house. I got into the enclosed, private dog run area that I reserved for supervised matings and puppy socialization with families. I got inside and let Raziyah off the lead to go and sniff around and mark if needed. Kasper came in while Raziyah was off in the corner, but kept Nikaro on the lead. Raziyah suddenly caught his scent, straightened her posture, and I saw her hackles go up. I had the male on the lead because he is both the more dominant one and the one who will go after the female even if she isn't comfortable yet. Nikaro is not a proven stud and this was his first experience with an in-heat but not-ready-yet female. I felt that Raziyah might need space and would be able to seek it with Nikaro on the lead.

Raziyah reared and dashed towards us. She didn't hesitate for a moment before she almost tackled Nikaro before he stepped out of the way and barked. Raz turned around quickly and stood up to him, nose sniffing, noses moving down the neck and around the head, until they stiffened their bodies and stared at one another for a moment. Raz bowed, her whole body wiggling, and then so did Nikaro. They barked and yelped and Raziyah showed absolutely no signs of nervousness or wanting space, so calmly, Kasper released Nikaro's lead after I closed the halfway point of the dog run so that they could run without a smaller space with us.

Raz and Nikaro played loudly for about 20 minutes. Nik was very interested but slightly confused as to what to do with himself. We laughed as he jumped over her back and attempted to mount as she snapped back at him and started to rear and tackle him again. This went on for many minutes until Raziyah seemed to get a little irritated, raising her hackles and snapping more than usual. Nik kept attempting to mount but sometimes slipped off or got nipped at. I believed it was time to grab them so Nik wouldn't get discouraged for next time.

I felt this went very well and not as bad as it could have been. Both of them are well tempered and don't have a problem generally with other dogs, so I knew it wouldn't be a difficult meeting. However, I couldn't have known what would occur the next time they'd meet.

Raziyah's Twelveth Day of Heat

6:00 a.m.

I awoke quietly in the dark morning light in an abnormal Canadian September. Yesterday, it hit 91.4° F (33° C) in the afternoon, but as I cracked the cream-paned window, a meagering breeze chilled through my skin. "That's just like you, Canada," I snorted, "to be flippin' hot one day and flippin' cold the next." I knew it would be a fair temperature today, however, as soon as the sun came up.

Before I walked into the kitchen, I said a prayer for the events that were about to occur today and (hopefully) within the next 72 hours. I mixed up some 6% plain yogurt, alcohol-free liquid Stevia, half a chopped ripened mango, and sprinkled it with flaxseed and ground rolled oats. This would give me the energy for the next few hours. This plain yogurt often makes it to my dog's bowls as well.

I dressed myself in my comfortable Equestrian-style leggings (not actual ones), hiking boots (which are moderately unbecoming but so comfy when I have to be on my feet pretty much all day), a brown belt, white v-neck T-shirt, and my light sweater. I also stuffed some light mitts into my pocket, an almond snack, and a biodegradable bag, and out the door I went with Nikaro's black nylon rope leash.

Stepping into the kennels, I walked past some sleepers and many awake, as I pressed the buttons on the front of their kennel cages to open the mechanical doors to their kennels so they could go outside. These kennels were only for holding dogs here temporarily, except for in-heat bitches or ill dogs. As all the dogs sped out their doors into their individual outdoor kennel runs, I opened the heavy front door of Nikaro's run and was met with a jump and several kisses. Nikaro's family allowed him to jump up, which isn't what I normally allow, but I accepted the kisses with my own as I buckled his leash on and took the private access door into the woods for his 30-minute walk, which ended up being about 45 minutes.

After putting him back in his kennel with some water (no food yet), I went back into my house, down a flight of stairs, around 3 corners, on the way to the "heat suite" which is an odd name, I know, but it's where I keep my in-heat females in one place other than inside of my home. The amount of organization that goes into have a lot of intact dogs in one area is utmost. It is the only way I have been able to prevent any unwanted breedings.

I grabbed a stainless steel bowl, grabbed two Spring Meadows patties (one beef, one goat), a couple chicken feet, half a chicken back, and a small piece of Atlantic bluefin tuna. I opened the door to two in-heat bitches. One of them was very special today, the black, small one. I first took out the big black one and supervised her as she did her business, and I cleaned it up and let her back inside, and gave her her first and largest meal of the day. Lastly, I took the small female, Raziyah, out of her kennel from the front and went out the door that took us out into the woods, and took her for her 30 to 45-minute-long walk.

7:30 a.m.

I had texted my friend and my helper, Dov, to meet at the front gate of the breeding grounds, which is the same large pen area that we got Nikaro and Raziyah to meet. My friend, Kasper, would have Nikaro at hand, collared, leashed, not muzzled because he is pretty docile and the fact Raz and him had such a good meeting before made me think they'd be fine. I did, however, bring a muzzle for Raz if needed.

We met at the front gates. The dogs were very interested in each other, and Nikaro looked very intense. This was going to be his first breeding, but he knew a female in estrus when he saw smelled one! I went in through the gate into the pen first and then did Kasper and the helper, Dov, who is one of my kennel helpers. He is strong and often helps me with things that need more man strength or just in case. We let them off leash.

Nikaro fell hard for Raziyah. There was a lot of typical foreplay for about 30 minutes. I honestly began to think jeez, flag already Raz, but within a few minutes of that, she did it! She stood, self stacked, looked gorgeous, and presented her butt to Nikaro who was too busy being a newbie to notice. She did that, moving her tail off to the side (which is docked anyways), about 7 or 8 times before he noticed. He began to mount, sometimes off to the side, slipping off, and at one point he mounted the wrong end. We chuckled about it but studied him, and we knew he may need a bit of help. Both of them were doing just fine, didn't seem stressed, except for Nikaro but it was a normal type of stress for a stud dog.

I called Raziyah to me and Nikaro followed. I got Kasper to hold on to Raziyah's collar, petting her head. Nikaro was jumping around, very excited, but as an unproven male, he didn't know what to do. I grabbed him under his armpits and mounted him onto Raziyah for him, helping him understand where to put his paws and what all to do. I placed his feet behind her feet and as he began to thrust, I just put my hand on the back of his pelvis and guided his pelvis towards hers. After this, I stepped back and saw that Nik had finally penetrated and the breeding began. He slid off and there was no tie.

Kasper let Raziyah go and she flagged again several feet away from us. This is it, Nikaro... you're on your own! I whispered. He mounted correctly, achieved penetration. He stopped while still mounted. At that time, we three walked in and each went to our own places -- Kasper held Raziyah's head, Dov held Nikaro's head, and I sat on the stool, helped Nikaro down onto his four feet, and I held their butts together. This was the tie, which lasted about 40 minutes in total. Raziyah is about an inch shorter than Nikaro and was able to stand while tied, but while holding them together, I was also holding Raziyah up a little to make her feel a bit better.

Finally, the tie was over and it released. Raziyah was taken to a crate immediately so to make sure she didn't urinate. It's not likely that urination would get into the way of the semen, but it is simply a precaution, and also to keep her vaginal canal free of anything that would otherwise change the acidity and possibly kill the sperm. Nikaro was taken for a 20-minute walk to make sure his penis retracted back into the protective sheath, so as to not injure himself. Then, he was taken back to his indoor kennel, slept for an hour and a half to settle his stomach, then given his morning meal. After an hour, Raziyah was let out to empty herself and then given her morning meal.

Then I had a nap.
I decided to do something different. Instead of a breeding picture, a breeding literature. I think this took more effort than a simple drawing, honestly.

Reasons for This Combination

Quote from The Succession:

" Raziyah is second generation Raziel line, boasting a fresh spin on the Cane Corso with her elegance and very athletic body. This body, however, needs some touch ups and moving around of parts, but complements one very special male in my breeding program, for whom I have been contemplating a partner. Raziyah is Azikiel's brother, so she is genetically similar to him, yet phenotypically not as much. She has the trotter conformation, the kind that can trot all day without becoming tired. She has a tipped pelvis and straight and a nail croup. This, however, is not typical of the Cane Corso and must be rounded up. However, her rear angulation is about perfect, but needs a bit more turn to the stifle. Her bone is strong but lacks substance, what her partner will give her. Her front and rear assembly is sound, her skull/muzzle ratio and convergence rustic. Her proportions and temperament are Corso but she needs a little something.

The male I will be putting her to is named Nikaro, a typical male who, in my opinion, will correct multiple things in Raziyah and be strengthened by her construction and proportions. Nikaro is a combination of Nikolai, Magnum, and Zakhar lineage, with no real homozygosity like Adora, for example, but from a line that consistently produces beautiful, typical dogs. Nikaro will bring bone into Raziyah, strengthen her overall Corso appearance, correct some convergence faults, and thicken her up. Raziyah will heat up Nikaro's friendly temperament, correct some structural weaknesses, and lighten him up a bit. (He is a medium 26" at the shoulder with 120 lbs, while Raziyah is just over 25" and only 100 lbs.)

This delightful breeding will be a pure outcross just like the Azikiel Adora breeding, but the offspring of these two breedings will have some similarities to one another that may come together in the future. We at Fortezza are always thinking of the future combinations, sometimes even some 3 or 4 generations later (6 to 8 years in the future)!"
