Oi! Stop eating my journal!

I don’t think Charles Darwin needs any introduction! ;) But the Toxodon might

The Toxodon was a hoofed mammal that lived around 1 million years ago in South America. It had three toes, a very muscular body and is thought to have been one of the most common animals of its time. Because of the position of its nostrils it was generally believed that Toxodon lived amphibious like a Hippo, however this is under dispute.

Charles Darwin was one of the first to discover Toxodon fossils when he came to South America. In Uruguay he purchased a scull from a local farmer and described the creature in his journal calling it “one of the strangest animals, ever discovered”.

The discovery of the Toxodon and other related animals might have influenced Darwins theory of Evolution. The Species Toxodon darwini is named in his honor.

It’s pretty obvious that I based my depiction of Darwin on this picture:

Special thanks to Nigel Marven for bringing the Toxodon to my Attention :)
