Description

A book cover based on the novel (and film) Gone with the Wind, done in the Art Nouveau style.

I noticed that most of the past-year student works which were shown to my class as reference focused on the dysfunctional romance between the main character, Scarlett O' Hara and her lover Rhett Butler. I think that's because when you search "gone with the wind" on the internet, 90% of the screenshots of the film show Scarlett and Rhett kissing or embracing each other. And why is that? It's because of the film's iconic posters depicting them doing exactly that. And as someone who has watched the film during the vacation months before school started (well, my brother happened to buy a DVD of it, so I watched the entire 4 hours of it), I feel that most people miss out another very important aspect of the story - the main character's transformation from a spoilt brat to an independent but cold-hearted businesswoman, shaped by poverty and the harsh events of the American Civil war.

Bingo. It was a lightbulb moment for me. *ding*

I had a hard time trying to get a fitting colour for the border. It could've been better - the top of the border should've been lighter/brighter to make it stand out. Now it blends in quite a bit with the sky @_@ Also, the letter D of "WIND" is dangerously close to the letter N :nuu: Up close it doesn't look so bad, but as a thumbnail it does :ohnoes:

If there's one thing I want this to remind me of, it's that I NEED to practice drawing realistic human faces, AND play around with the Gradient Mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. Thank goodness my teacher allowed us to use a mix of Photoshop and Illustrator, so I did the shading using Photoshop instead. Wanted to use the Gradient Mesh tool in Illustrator, but that proved to be too confusing and time-consuming. Gotta master it for my own sake.

Looks great! I really like the shape of her hair! I love how the flowers and the flags look!
On her face, I would suggest spreading out the cheek a little more evenly, but other than that, it looks perfect!

What you said about how people portray Gone with the Wind reminds me of every so-called romantic classic. The ones I've read have all been extremely stupid and dysfunctional. (Just got done having to read one, so my anger is fresh. :XD:)
