Background:
Adriaan’s background is like any other young man in his early twenties. He was raised in a dysfunctional family with an abusive father. At the age of thirteen, he dropped out of school, changed his name, and moved to Germany to live with his extended family on his mother’s side. Oh, and he forewent death after a cliff jumping accident that happened when he was fifteen. 

“Wait, what was that last part? Did you just make that up?”

Yes. Wait. No. Errr. Let me explain. Actually, Adriaan’s life story teeters on the edge of fact and fiction. His entire childhood with estranged parents left an abysmal hole in his past. He doesn’t know when he was born, where the rest of his family is, or why there are scars on his body. Whenever someone asks questions about these matters, he makes up curious answers to fill in the voids. Most adults are aware that he is not being honest, but they usually sense his dread and embarrassment and save face by acknowledging it as the truth. He has embellished his existence so much that he has almost lost touch with reality. All he is certain of is that he is roughly thirteen years old and that he and his brother, Aaron, are night and day in the eyes of their mother and father. Aaron is treated fairly, and while Adriaan doesn’t understand why, he does not resent him. Aaron’s compassion towards his younger sibling is what keeps Adriaan from running away or resorting to other measures of escape...

However, one night after their father beats Adriaan unconscious and breaks his arm in the process, Aaron realizes that he cannot protect his younger brother anymore and pleads with their distant relatives to care for Adriaan in secrecy. Aaron has only seen his grandmother twice and Adriaan has never met her, but she agrees and arranges for him to ride via rail from their home in The Netherlands to her home in Germany. There he adjusts to his new life with his Grandma Zenzi and eventually befriends Isaac and Brodie, two young boys who live in the same village and are immigrants themselves. Over the next two years, the boys become an inseparable triad. One day while they’re exploring the coast, they decide to try cliff jumping as a sort of “right-of-passage” or whatever you guys want to call it. Their adventure quickly becomes a nightmare after Adriaan hits a sharp rock on the descent (jeez this guy can’t catch a break). The blow leaves him comatose for almost a day, but he eventually comes to that same night and surprisingly sustains only minor injuries. Nearly a decade passes without any more misfortunes and Adriaan believes he can finally have a bright future, but he’s soon forced to stop daydreaming as he falls back into his dismal reality. Why did his brother suddenly show up? What secrets about Adriaan did Aaron and Grandma Zenzi expose? And what really happened that day eight years ago on the white cliffs?
