DAY 15: PRINCE ERIC
Now we’ll start looking at some of the characters of the film. I’ll be saying who they are, their role in the film & what’s become of them in the rest of the franchise. I won’t be spotlighting Sebastian, Ursula, Triton or Scuttle since I already spotlighted them previously in other pictures and I don’t wanna seem too repetitive. To start this week off, we have the first character we see in the film: Prince Eric.
Once you see him in “Fathoms Bellow”, you know he’s got something the past princes don’t have: actual personality & depth. Yeah, he does fall for Ariel once he hears her voice, but he does eventually grow to like Ariel, in MORE than just one day mind you (unlike the past princes), and find she IS the girl for him, whether she saved him or not. He’s also got this great passion for sailing. He loves the salty sea air, the wind blowing in his face; any day’s a perfect day at sea for him. And him having more than about 10 lines/only 2 scenes/just one song is better than is obviously much better development, complete with the animated Spiderman’s voice, Christopher Daniel Barnes, who was 16 when he recorded Eric.
As for other media, he was shown in brief cameos in the prequel TV series. He & Ariel never met each other, preserving continuity of the film, but in one episode, he did alter Ariel’s perception of humans, saving a dolphin trapped in a net. In the sequel, Return to the Sea, he’s only shown briefly, is the only Disney prince who’s also a father and is voiced by… Rob Paulsen? There’s also a bit of backstory with Eric in the Broadway show & he even gets a few songs… but he goes Cinderella & gives a singing contest to find the right girl. (But we’ll delve into the B’way show in week 7.) Nonetheless, Eric’s a great change to the Disney Princes, & the princes that followed after really show it.
