SONG #99

98.
“All That Jazz” from Chicago (2002)

My first hearing of the song itself is… when I decided to hear any of the songs from the list I haven’t heard of. Before then, I already heard about the
Chicago movie, but never seen it. I only remember seeing the poster until 2014. My first viewing of the film was to prepare myself for when our high school did it in February 2014 to see if I’d be interested in being a part of it, & I enjoyed it. There were some elements that my drama teacher said weren’t handled as well from the past Broadway shows. & even though I haven’t seen those, I can see where she’s coming from. (White dresses for guilty sinners? No way, red’s more fitting.) For “All That Jazz”, it has nice 1920s jazz, the choreography is great & the then-pregnant Catherine Zeta-Jones is really great as Velma Kelly. The way the pacing goes (getting more intense & fast-paced as it nears the end) is very fitting, since it does have a sex scene playing against it.

For the drawing, I’m especially proud with the color tones. The shades of blue & lavender go well. In fact, the dancers/musicians in the foreground were just colored in different shades of black and blue! & Velma’s skin was just done in faded pink! & before anyone asks, no, I didn’t make that sparkle pattern in the back. I used a glitter image from Google & pasted it onto there; same goes for Velma’s dress. I do that most of the time with certain patterns; I
CAN make some of them on my own, it just depends on how complex it is. Later on, when I was in the 70s (from the list), I looked back & realized Zeta-Jones’ face looked really off. But instead of redrawing the entire thing, I redrew a new CZJ head & pasted it over the old one; saved me a lot of time and trees. I also found a blur tool on Photoshop where I decided to blur the foreground images to bring more attention to Jones.
