Description

Look at this- a new application! When I should really be focusing on responding to and commenting on my messages- //PUNTED I will write up a journal explaining my sudden month-long absence, but I've got to run to work after posting this so....in time. xD
No, but in all seriousness, this group is too intricate and well-thought out not to join. So please forgive me for my moment of weakness. ; u ;
And a great big thank you for the invite! Aaaaah- I feel so special to have been invited to join the group. I hope that Clement here can fit right in. ; A ;

Name: Clement Grancourt
Age: 324 years old (Appears 18)
Height: 5'8 ft

Species: Living Doll (/Dream Eater)
A ball-jointed doll created and brought to life by a necromancer, Clement doesn't physically age and is kept alive by magic alone. He was created to serve as a Dream Eater, whose purpose is to devour his master's nightmares.

Abilities:
    • Dreameater
Despite consuming both dreams and nightmares for a few centuries now, Clement's control over this ability is still very limited. In order to do this, the person he is targeting must be sleeping, as well as willing. (Clement is currently unable to enter a dream without permission) He cannot see any details of the dream that he is visiting -save for the occasional flash of an image- but is able to hear whatever it is that may be going on.

Likes:
    • Nice clothes. They don't necessarily have to be expensive, but anything formal or fancy will likely lead to instant love.
    • Dreams and nightmares. Sure he likes to consume them, but Clement doesn't actually dream: he sleeps, but dreams never come to him. Because of this he really likes hearing about other people's experiences with dreams, and even better, their nightmares.
    • Jewelry is always very nice. Earrings, necklaces, rings- you name it. If they're shiny, even better.
    • "Helping other people" sounds like a nice way to put it, but in reality Clement just really likes being ordered around. The best gift you could ever give him, is the chance to do your bidding- //OTL
    • Sewing. He's not very good at it (and would like to learn more), but is able to more-or-less stitch up tears and the like.
    • Cold weather. He can bundle up in whatever heavy clothing he likes without getting weird looks from strangers.
    • Instrumental music. Clement finds it to have a very soothing and calming effect. It's his favourite kind of music, and it really inspires him to want to pick up an instrument.

Dislikes:
    • Being stared at. When someone's attention is directly entirely on him, Clement can't help but fidget. It makes him really uncomfortable.
    • Most kinds of food. Although Clement can eat regular food, he doesn't actually need it to survive, and deems it unnecessary. Although he will partake in eating from time to time he prefers to avoid it, as he's yet been able to find something quite as delicious as a nightmare that terrorizes its owner. (Think of a much more tame version of Tokyo Ghoul)
    • Being told he can't help. People who refuse his help in general, really. Clem just wants to be useful- ; v ;
    • Complete darkness. Clement's night vision is on par with a regular human's, therefore he has the tendency to behave like a blind man the dark. At least until his eyes adjust. But this shows him in a less than graceful light, and God forbid that someone ever sees that.
    • New technology. He finds the internet, and phones, and computers, and a great deal of other things belonging to the 20th-21st century complicated and unnecessary. Or maybe that's just a cover to hide the fact that he'll never have any hope of understanding any of it...
    • His teeth. Maybe its a result of being a dream eater, but Clem's teeth are slightly sharper and more pointed than the average person's. He's very self-conscious about it.
    • Single layers of clothing. Clement loves his layers: the more the better. Anything less than two and he feels really exposed.

Fears:
    • Death
Although in a sense immortal, it scares Clement that his longevity is a gift beyond his own control, because his survival depends entirely on someone else. If no one wanted to help him....what then? It's not as if he even knows what awaits him in death.
    • Fire
Given that his body, although durable, isn't made of regular bone and flesh, fire intimidates Clement. Where flesh burns relatively slowly, his body would light up like a piece of tinder if exposed to an open flame -and that is very, very low on his list of ideal ways to go.
    • Isolation/Having no Purpose
For someone like Clem who has always been in the service of another person, the thought of being left alone is terrifying. He experienced it once, and it's something he never wants to go through again. Ever. Because where is his purpose to be found, if not in serving another?

Strengths
:
    • Following orders
Because of his servant mentality, Clement will rather easily and mindlessly follow orders that are given to him; as long as he has a certain level of respect for you, that is. He will execute the command to the best of his ability, and refuses to give anything but satisfactory results.
    • Durable
As alluded to earlier, Clement's doll body is relatively strong. As it is sustained by magic, the materials decay much more slowly than they ordinarily would and should the need arise, can easily be replaced. Unless someone comes at him with the right weapon, he would be difficult to dismantle.
    • Doesn't feel pain
Because his body isn't alive, his sense of touch is very poor. He does have some pain receptors, but they function at a minimal level, and are put in place more to warn him of potential danger than to make him more human.
    • Singing
In order to better ease someone into sleep, Clement actually has a very soothing singing voice that sounds like it was made for lullabies.

Weaknesses:
    • Doesn't often think for himself
Going back to the point above about his capability to effectively follow orders, it's important to note that Clem does so pretty....blindly. He lacks a strong sense of self, and is happy to live his life to better someone else's.
    • No morals
Let's face it, his moral code is practically nonexistent. Because he aligns himself with his current master, Clement is only as good, evil, or neutral as they are.
    • Flammable
Unless you're intending to use him as firewood, never come at Clement with a torch. Or fire magic. Or fire in general, really. He will light up like a Christmas tree, and unless you act quickly -goodbye Clem.

Goals:
    • To find a new master. Because this is what he was created for, Clem feels that this is his one true purpose in life. When he has no one to serve, he feels lost.
    • To gain better control over his ability, so that he may be of more use to the people who need him.

Personality:
 [Relatively unfeeling | Loyal | Honest/Blunt | Social | Easily Persuaded | Polite]
Emotions are, without a doubt, the one thing that Clement lacks most. Although a kind of resurrected spirit, Clement has no recollection of his past life and by association, the sentiments he may have felt while alive. He had been dead for too long a time to remember. In this fashion, he is much more doll than human. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings. Clement still feels joy, sadness, anger, and the like, but at a much lower level than the average person: like cranking down the volume on a stereo.

The greatest sentiment (if you will) that Clement is a guilty victim of is attachment. Devotion. No matter what name you give it, it is painstakingly clear that relationships are important to this living doll. However, unlike ordinary people, he doesn't necessarily bond with others due to mutual curiosity, or a sense of amity. What fuels his need for companionship is a search for purpose, and desperation to serve. Although the nature of this is odd, it does guarantee one thing: his unwavering loyalty. Should you find a special place in this boy's figurative heart, then you've got a trustworthy companion for life. Unless you betray him, but that's something entirely different.

Clement finds sugar-coating his words to be misleading and unnecessary- so he doesn't do it. Coming off as brutally honest on occasion, despite all good intentions, he can be a little harsh from time to time. Still, this doesn't mean that he's got a solid head on his shoulders. Clement is actually rather gullible, and will likely believe most of whatever is told to him. Going even further, it really doesn't take much to manipulate into doing something. Of course asking works just as well most of the time, but this is a dark magic school: tricking people is practically a requirement.

History:
Clement's story does not begin with his own "birth", but rather the intents and misfortunes of his creator.
Being born a witch in the 1600s, when the witch hunts were still at large, could make anyone's life difficult in magic-fearing Europe. Young, meticulous Edith -a powerful necromancer of the time who had, admittedly, few other talents- was no exception to the hardships presented. That, however, did nothing to deter her from her profession.

Although she worked with the dead, Edith was never one to be cynical, and actually offered her services to those in need. She would contact spirits (for a price), in order to solve whatever mystery may be plaguing a surviving loved one or relative. Being so obvious with her supernatural work was probably a very bad idea. In fact, after years of service, it was proved to be a terrible idea when a spy, posing as a customer, led to her discovery. The witch hunt had found its newest victim.

Despite Edith's gentle appearance, she was anything but when it came to self-preservation. For years she had communicated with the dead, but never had she been guilty of sending new souls to join them- but the hunt had pressed her hand. Edith was forced to kill. But her tracks were poorly covered, leading others to her. She was forced to kill once more. And again. And again. How long was this cycle going to last!? Finally, growing desperate, she fled her home country of France for the equally (if not more) magically-skeptical country of England. She built a new life, made a new name for herself: but even if she had been able to desert her past, she could never leave the memories behind. Nightmares became a nightly occurrence, and they were always bloody, gruesome, terrifying: as her mind sought to alter the events into something even darker. Edith could feel herself slipping into insanity. She could communicate with the dead, raise them even, but what good was any of that against nightmares?! It was in this dark moment, that an idea came to her like a ray of light.

She commissioned a puppeteer to make her a doll. A life-sized one. Distinctly human. Challenging herself as a necromancer, Edith summoned a soul -one that had found no comfort in death- and bound it to the ball-jointed doll. She asked her daughter, a witch like herself, to help supply magic to her creation. The two women bought a beautiful stone, and used it to store some of their magic. It glowed a dark, midnight blue: a colour reflecting the combination of Edith's affinity for darkness, and her daughter's for water. They fused it into the puppet's wooden body: a kind of makeshift heart if he was to have one. The gem resonated with the soul, and the puppet came alive. This was Edith's solution: a servant who's sole purpose was to consume her nightmares. And, as a result, destroy them.

They named him Clement, after Edith's deceased brother, and gave him their own last name despite his status as a servant. The doll remembered nothing of his previous life, nor of his time as a spirit. But none of that seemed to matter, because right from the moment of his creation, Clement was thrilled to be of use to these kind people who had given him a second chance in life.

Eating his first nightmare had been an.....odd experience. It was completely instinctual. In spite of the clumsy execution, however, Clement was good at what he had been created to do. Edith's nights were no longer restless, and she could finally let go of the dark past that had plagued her for years. Rather effortlessly, Clement was integrated into the family and for a time, the Grancourts was happy. It was a simple life, but in a time when magic was openly feared, simple was good. But then something happened that was beyond anyone's control.

With time Edith aged until she finally succumbed to a natural death. Clement became her daughter's possession -until the daughter herself passed as well. He then was passed onto her son (a warlock), and although never proclaimed, Clement became a Grancourt family heirloom to be passed down to each generation, from mother or father to the first-born child. Or, in some cases, whichever child showed magical promise. Because in order to survive, Clement had to be supplied with his master's magic.

Under some people's care he was treated as a butler; his dream eating abilities unneeded and forgotten. Under others he was a mere possession to be used as however the master may see fit. But others -often those who pursued a darker path- would again make use of his original purpose. No matter the situation (whether kindness was offered or absent), Clement loved the Grancourts and serving them brought him pleasure that not even the darkest of dreams could replicate. He loved each one as much as the last, but even he could not foresee the ending that await.

When his newest master died suddenly, it came as a shock to Clement when he realized that there were no heirs for him to go to. In a way, he was the last of the Grancourt line; a responsibility he was painfully unprepared for. His first thought wasn't a question of how he was going to survive from now on with no one to fill his magic supply. Instead, he was trying to think of who his new master would be. For the first time in three centuries Clement was lost....purposeless....hopeless even. What was a servant with no master to serve?!

After a few years of hopeless wandering, Clement stumbled across a brochure for a school that was open to supernatural students. It intrigued him- surely he could find some kind of magic user in that school. He became interested in wanting to attend, desperate to find a new master, but there was also a small part of himself eager to have the chance to do some self-discovery. With a new source of determination, Clement applied with the intent of getting a potions degree, thinking that by expanding his knowledge and learning new skills, he would be be of more use to his new master....whoever they would be.

Misc. Information:
    • Is fluent in both English and French.
    • The stone that feeds him magic is embedded into his chest. It faintly glows the colour associated with whatever type of magic the previous donor specializes in. (For example, red-fire, blue-water, green-earth, etc.)
    • Before his passing, Clement's last master charged his stone with as much magic as it could hold. This means that Clement will have 80 panic-free years before having to find a new donour.
    • Only really smiles when he's greeting someone, since that's really the only time that social interaction demands for it.
    • Has no blood. Not a single drop of it. This makes blood magic, amoung other kinds, completely out of his reach -unless he were to borrow someone else's blood, but that's a different story entirely.
I don't know why I filled in the "signature in blood", then. It makes no sense. But it looked so empty without it- gah, might change it to something else (like ink or something) later. ; v ;

:
Clement: *as he made eye contact with a passerby his lips curled into the most dazzling of smiles, and his feet started to carry him forward towards the stranger -social protocol demanded for communication after all* Greetings! If you don't mind my noticing, you seem lost. *he innocently tilted his head* I'm rather new here myself, but if there's anything I can do to help, please allow me. My assistance is yours should you but ask for it.

Paragraph Sample:
The living doll stood immobile, unblinking, with his arms crossed gently across his chest. When he finally looked over he did so as subtly as possible, as if being caught moving was some kind of sin against humanity. Clement told himself he was being ridiculous. But that didn't stop him from watching as a fellow student left, clearing his way to the front of the line. Unwilling, he forced himself to step forward, his movements stiff and controlled. What exactly was he doing here? "That is a very good question..." He muttered quietly to himself, plastering on his best poker face as he approached the counter. Clement forced back a grimace: what he would give for a delicious nightmare right now. Anything to wash away the bitter taste of the, ugh, food he was going to be forced to eat.

Alas, since I know this app will be updated at some point, I come here anyway... because I am rather curious--

I want to interact with Clement more than our Secret Santa interaction. >u< Mind if I add you on Skype from the OW chat, or would you prefer notes? ;u;/
