History

Born of an extended flirtation between her dockworker father and a inexperienced
weaver that eventually fell apart, Nerlasi was raised exclusively by her father.  Since she was unable to manage the physical labor of loading and unloading silk bales, she carried messages for pennies, running instructions and information from one side of the docks to another, developing a knack for details and a memory like a steel trap.  As times became harder, Nerlasi began to sell select tidbits of information about private sales to interested parties in order to turn a little extra profit and cultivate partnerships with merchants in order to keep her increasingly sickly father in work. 

When she was 16, everything fell apart.  The owner of a prominent business that employed her father was revealed to have participated in massive fraud in order to line his own pockets.  Her father was summarily fired, and unable to find work, as he was permanently weakened after a bad fall from a scaffold.  To avoid starvation, Nerlasi apprenticed herself to a glassblower known and avoided for using his apprentices as mere laborers without actually teaching them the craft.  While she toiled in order to keep her and her father alive, Nerlasi kept a close watch on her master, learning the fundamentals of glassblowing, as well as his secret formulas, through observation alone. She also began to build a network of informants loyal to her by bribing street children and beggars with information on where to find food and theft targets.

At the age of nineteen, Nerlasi executed a plan she had spent the last two years setting up.  When a massive shipment of  extremely expensive supplies for a rival glassblower entered the harbor, Nerlasi instigated a fight between two gangs just by the ship the night before the ship was due to unload.  The fight escalated, and the guards of the ship were killed, resulting in the looting of the entire cargo.  She then framed her master for the vandalism, who was then arrested and his shop was given over to his lawful apprentice, Nerlasi.  The loss of the supplies had spelled financial, but especially reputational ruin for her competitor, and, shortly following his bankruptcy, Nerlasi became the prominent glassblower in region.

As an adult, Nerlasi controls two businesses: a prominent glassblowing store and the flow of information.  Her network has expanded to include servants as well as the underclass.  She also prods her higher class customers for information, charming them into revealing more than they should.  Nothing significant happens in the artisan district without some word getting to her, and she uses this advantage to court the best commissions.
