Description

[Overview]

Name: Asamir (az-uh-meer) "The Bear Dog"

Age: 6 Years Old
Gender: Male
Breed: Greenland Dog
Height: 26 inches at the withers
Weight: 70 lbs
Build: He's built like a bull, with a heavy chest and thinner waist. He's a bulky brute with large muscles and massive paws tipped with needle-like claws. His legs are long yet thick and his body is riddled with scars from previous fighting injuries. His tail and ears were docked to make it harder for his rivals to read his emotions and to limit what they can catch a hold of during a fight.
Accessories: His leather harness was crafted for him by the Ikkuma's finest artisans, and was commissioned by Hartok himself. It is grizzly bear hide lined with polar bear fur and inlaid with seal teeth at the crest.
Family: Taktuq (brother), Anyu (half-sister)

Tribe: Ikkuma
Position: Lead Dog
Handler: Though he was originally gifted to the Ikkuma's Captian, Hartok, he is looked after by Illia, his spirited young sister who's a hunter for the tribe. Illia is the only human Asamir allows to handle him, however he will tolerate most of the Ikkuma people so long as they do not look him in the eye or make rash movements around him.

[Personality]

At a glance, Asamir is a truly unremarkable dog. He is an average size, classic coloring for a Greenland dog, and relatively calm. However, in his presence Asamir oozes potential and strength. His credence is so strong that it typically has an abiding effect on those he encounters. He moves with great purpose in each step, and in character alone is not easy to pass over. His commanding presence is generally enough to keep  the disobedient at bay, but Asamir has no qualms with throwing his weight around when necessary. He expects all dogs to respect the pecking order, and should they fail, they will own their mistakes. For the Ikkuma, violence is a necessary tool for correction, and Asamir upholds this tradition. However, he does not approve of spilling blood without reason and condemns those who fight for sport. Such energy should not be needlessly wasted in a land where large predator threats are all too common. Asamir will not hesitate to throw himself into the fray when necessary to stop outbreaks if they erupt between clan members. He is very tactical in his way of thinking. He knows when to answer the call of battle, but also and when to back off.

One can never be sure where they truly sit with Asamir. He’s a stoic canine with an unnerving tendency for silence. He does not lend himself to frivolous conversations unless he is completely relaxed. His words are generally short and blunt, and he will spare his adversaries no profanities (no mouth of a gentleman here). The brute does seem to have a difficult time unwinding when the challenges of the Arctic constantly keep him on his toes. However, those who manage to appeal to the beast will find that beneath his hard exterior is a generous and protective personality, that given the opportunity can learn to grow fond of others. He will put himself in the line of fire to defend those he cares about. Asamir places his trust in the Swing Dogs, who he generally views with approval and respect. The relationship is not always an amiable one, but the group knows they must band together for the betterment of the clan. Together, they govern the canines of the Ikkuma. Being an x-Wheel Dog himself, Asamir has a general preference for this class, and will see to it that these dogs are given extra consideration when it comes to feeding and sleeping arrangements. While Asamir views females as equally capable dogs, he does have a rather possessive streak when it comes to their affairs. As the Lead Dog he believes they all fall under his harem.

For all his strengths, Asamir is secretly a dog of many weaknesses. He takes great stride to protect his faults from surfacing, locking them inside and forcing himself to endure his own downfalls. He suffers from self-doubt, and often times this results in him projecting his own insecurities on others. He will punish the other dogs for little reason based on his own inhibitions. He will lash out unexpectedly, even if it is uncalled for, and he expects the other dogs to take it. Despite his downfalls, the brotherhood of the Ikkuma is Asamir’s way of life, and he will fight to the death to defend it. He’s hard and at times downright unemotional, but he genuinely cares about the dogs, more in a broad sense than an individual way.

Goal: Asamir's greatest pleasure would be to see the fall of the Illamar tribe. He believes firmly that the Illamar stole his tribe's rightful territory from them and wants nothing more than to see the clan suffer as the Ikkuma have for centuries. He wants to conquer them, revealing how powerless their "Great Spirits" truly are. Aside from his unbridled need for revenge, the well-being of his tribe and family remain at the core of his concern. His endearment for his people and the brotherhood of the Ikkuma are the unwavering forces that drive his actions.

[History]

Asamir’s scarred pelt tells the story of his life in the Ikkuma tribe. Born and bred within the clan, the Ikkuma’s strength runs deep in the dog’s blood. Asamir’s litter was born in early spring to a notoriously powerful pair of Greenland dogs, however his sire and dam lacked desirable qualities such as an even temperament. The result was a litter of highly unstable and erratic pups, who’s unchecked strength was nearly impossible for the breeders to control. They were hard to train, however their strength put them to good use. Asamir was no exception. When the pups were a few months old, Asamir and his siblings faced their first bear cub at their coming of age ceremony. This was also the time when his ears and tail were cropped in preparation of future fights. As a team, they continued to train with bear cubs, advancing to full grown bears until they were ready to go their separate ways within the clan.

When Asamir was three months old he was hand selected from the litter to be presented as a gift to the Captain of the Ikkuma tribe, Hartok. Hartok saw great ability in the pup and was pleased in his lineage, however lacked the patience to train him. Young Asamir’s aggression was becoming a problem, and grew worse with every day that he aged. Unwilling to get rid of the pup, Hartok kept Asamir chained up just outside of the territory so he would not chance endangering the tribe. Every day a new member of the Ikkuma would attempt to train the dog, but Asamir’s antisocial tendencies and nervous antics could not be trusted. He would lunge at anyone who dared get too close to him, safe for one. Illia, Hartok’s younger sister, not a day over 12, was the one who tamed the beast. Her unwavering persistence struck a chord with a young Asamir, who saw something in the fiery young girl that he could relate to. In a way, the girl, needing a companion, and the pup, needing guidance, were each the halves of one whole. Over the course of a month, Illia gained Asamir’s trust. She brought him food, spoke with him words that fell foreign on his ears but were nonetheless soft and comforting, and eventually he granted her his touch. A soft lick to her rosy cheek, and a bond unlike either of them had known before was formed. To this day the tribe remains shocked that one little girl was able to tame a once uncontrollable dog. Asamir remains protective of Illia and is usually seen by her side when not preoccupied with the team.

Asamir assumed his role as a Wheel dog for the sled team, learning skills from the older dogs. The humans were surprised to find that Asamir's sense of smell was very refined, so they often utilized this by having him accompanying the Scouts on their raids of the Illamar. His sleek black coat was perfect for avoiding detection, and his strength was used to subdue Illamar’s warriors and their dogs. Asamir was enthralled with the practice. He enjoyed silencing the other dogs, and his lust for power intensified. Eventually through hard work and passion Asamir was selected as the next Lead Dog for the team.

It makes me really happy to see people use sled dogs other than huskies or malamutes :) In fact, a dog from my comic is based on a greenland dog. :D
