Species Description: Like Kaine, born a bastard child between a succubus who laid with a phoenix. As a half-breed between the two, Avery has retained traits from both sides of the parents. Wings, skin/eye color, body heat, healing/death regeneration from his phoenix side. Shadowmancy affinity, ability to be contracted, and a healthy appetite for intimacy/affection come from his demonic side. Per any phoenix from his 'clan' or 'flock', depression can kill him so don't be surprised to always see him upbeat and cheerful.

Abilities:

• Healing: Can heal minor wounds on himself and others, at the cost of equal energy being sapped. Can heal or mend broken bones by basically burning off equivalent amounts of things on his own body.
• Death Regeneration: Can bring someone back from the dead by burning himself up to transfer life energy. He will return from death caused to him at all within 24 hours of actual dying (at the cost of returning younger, smaller, weaker).
• Shadowmancy Affinity: Manipulate the shadows naturally and with ease.
• Spirit Summoning: Can summon spirits in a variety of strengths or numbers depending on location of campus. Has permanently taken two spirits (Nick and Peeves) from the Astral Studies department, as his treasured companions.

Likes:

• Learning new things, even if everything isn't "bright shiny" new anymore.
  
• Flying, and sometimes with people!
  
• By that, he also likes heights. Can often be found on top of Chronomancy's clock tower, or on the other buildings' roofs. One day he wants to climb the mountains.
• Adventure, and exploring. Though he hasn't found someone with the same zest for exploration quite yet...
• Hot drinks, especially hot apple cider.
• Blankets, curling up like a burrito in them.
• Hugs! Hugs and holding hands, but mostly hugs. Physical affection will always make him smile.
• Science, medical knowledge. With his increasing ability to read, he's sucking down textbooks like they're going out of style.
• Harry Potter! Thanks to Norrie, he is a true Potterhead -- and a proud Hufflepuff.
• Warm autumn colors, such as red or orange or yellow. Though he likes orange a little more nowadays...
• His friends! Every single person he meets he considers a friend, except for mCasper and Cecil.
• Snow, especially while it's falling.
• Being poked and making little peep noises.

Dislikes: 

• He's come to realize he doesn't like chocolate.
  
• Nor does he like frozen foods; they tend to melt before he can really try them.
  
• The sensation of falling, slipping, or anything like that.
• Cages big enough to hold him in.
• Anyone touching, petting, biting, or cutting off his wings without his permission.
• Pain. He's a weenie when it comes to pain.
• Sleeping alone. He gets EHS sometimes, and also spent most of his life alone and hates it.
• When people assume he's out to take their happiness. Looking at you, Oleander
• People who want to look at his skeleton.
• mCasper in specifics, the first and only person so far that he doesn't like.
• His body temperature dropping too low, putting him in danger.
• Molting, or losing feathers in general. Sometimes it hurts, but it just feels weird for a bunch of pieces of himself to fall off himself.
• Depression. The way it makes him feel sick and helpless, and worse when he's the one feeling it.
  

Strengths:

• Friendly to a fault! Avery likes socializing and making new friends.
  
• Somewhat of an empath; he can "sense" or "feel" intense negative feelings from people. He calls them "the Sads" and is drawn to these people in an instinctive want to help them, make them happy, and feel better.
  
• He has a high body temperature, of about 103-106 at rest. However, most cold things melt immediately on contact with him, though not with others of a similar temperature. Makes for a good cuddlebirb though!
• 95% of the time, you can count on him to be happy and cheerful. He does his best to spread the warmth.
• He tends to be the person one "needs him to be" as he adapts to every social situation with relative ease.
• Pretty logical, however; a realist. If confronted with flawed logic, he'll question it. A lot.
  

Weaknesses: 

• With how quickly he melts things, playing in the snow isn't as fun.
  
• He sometimes hits people with his wings, oops.
• Weak stomach, in that there are a lot of things he can't eat, and sometimes goes for days without having a full meal, just snacking on things. Like a true birb
• Autophobia -- the fear of having to work and live alone. It's crippling.
• Illiteracy. He's learning fast, but some of the harder texts are... well, hard.

Fears: 

• Being caged up again.
  
• Losing friends. Though he feels that's already coming to pass. :c
• His wings being cut out again -- and by extension, mCasper. Thank GOD he's going back into the Alternate Room.
• Negative feelings; depression and fear and anger and anything that makes him feel bad.
• Death. He can revive from it, but only so many times. What happens if it was permanent?

In spite of a harsh upbringing in isolation, Avery's come to flourish over his years of freedom. He's kind and free-spirited, accommodating and loyal, seeking the good in everyone! Literally everyone; he refuses to believe someone is bad until proven so -- "innocent until proven guilty". Constantly he works at keeping up his happiness in order to spread it to others, and for once it seems like he's a truthful sort of happy, it's not a mask he puts on or anything. And once he makes friends, he is loyal to them to a fault; perhaps this is the benefit of making multiple friends, many friends?

He's also very realistic. Seeing the harsh, hard side of the world from as young as the age of two has made him very strong in his sense of what is right and what is wrong. He can usually pick out when someone is lying, and if they try to give him a bogus story to any sort of phenomena, he'll poke and prod it until it falls apart. This might be why the medicine department appeals to him so; because science and logic. However he is a daydreamer, and likes to come up with crazy stories and ideas himself -- a bit of a contradiction, he is.

History:

Pre-OW:
Avery was born a single child to a succubus demon and one of her many suitors/partners -- an unnamed phoenix. Being as he was a hybrid upon birth, and most especially looking like his father, like all other hybrids he was set into a cage outside, and left to rot over the years, starting at age two. Avery grew up watching the dark world around him through the grated lens of the fence, watching other hybrids be born. Be left behind. Be killed. He watched atrocities of sex and violence without being able to shield himself from it, and died too many times from sickness and infections -- so many times he lost track.

Before what seemed to be an almost permanent death, however, a miracle happened. Two shadowmancers silently invaded the secluded demon society he was held in, in an attempt to free the mistreated hybrids. An act of revenge for one of them -- who by some streak of luck was Avery's oldest half-brother. There were many casualties, including Kaine's own partner in Glitch, but as repayment for saving him, he revived Glitch from death, and proceeded to sleep the rest of the journey back to the school.

As a visitor, Avery didn't do much, besides stick around the Shadowmancy building -- Kaine in particular -- as he recovered from the past. The free world was startling and overwhelming, leading to many sleepless nights and often random spurts of falling asleep, jumping awake at strange noises. While he stayed as a visitor, Avery gained himself quite the wardrobe, and went with Kaine to the alternate room so Morpheus, his nephew, could play with his friends. A year of recovery, and the bird boy was ready to actually attend the school himself.

First Year:
For a first year at a Dark Arts academy, it was certainly better than he thought it would be -- though it seemed Avery carries on his shoulders a similar curse Kaine does. That curse being a healthy dose of trauma alongside all of his happiness; and for Avery, who is a friendly and happy person by default, it opened himself up for a lot of bad things to happen. This included -- but wasn't limited to -- having his wings cut off in the first month of his classes, finding a source of sadness in the rocky relationship with his best friend, and at the very end of the year watching a classmate and acquaintance of his be killed when an assignment went awry.

Amidst this, Avery socialized and made many friends -- the most important ones to him being his two roommates in Casper and Samhain, as well as his sister figure in Nóriel, and last but not least the ex-professor in Drake Moritz... who he has focused much of his attention on, in an attempt to help him recover from his depression. In spite of the bad things that have happened this year, Avery still looks forward to continuing his education, taking classes with his friends and future brother-in-law, and living life for two now; as he feels it's the least he can do for Sagittarius, who died calling him her friend.

Misc. Information:

• His wings change color every time they molt. They represent a cycle of sorts -- last term it was red to match his hair, the 'start of something new', and this year it's orange with flecks of gold and red. This represents his emotional stability, which is 'stable and warm, but flickers, like a fire'.
• Cats always instinctively attack him, and it makes him sad. The only ones who haven't are Cal's cats.
• He's starting to wear orange because Drake likes the color and probably insisted on it.
• His birthday is September 23rd, commonly known as the first day of fall.
• He sounds like Bartz Klauser in terms of voice. Bright, cheerful, and silly-curious.

Casper-- They were best friends. Casper makes him sad, but he'll always be there for the other. Always. ;v;

Drake-- One of his best friends! He's very happy to see Drake happy, and sometimes these two are rather inseparable.
Glitch-- His future brother in law, Avery is excited to share a class with Glitch and hopes to make friends with him.
Ignatia-- His professor is nice and sweet and encouraging, though she is the reason Sagittarius died (even if indirectly)...
Kaine-- Platonic family love for his oldest brother! He hopes for nothing more than Kaine's utmost happiness with his upcoming marriage.
Katja-- For a floating head, she's pretty good a teacher! He hopes to make her proud in his studies.
Kichi-- Senpai in flight! While everyone else seems to hate Kichi to a degree, Avery likes him just fine, even stretching as far as calling him a friend~
Lace-- The other taught him much about stars, but his blank, statue like presence is a bit... off-putting. Or a lot.
Lucy-- She's very sweet to him, and a dear friend. He knows she crushes on him, but also has no idea what it's like to crush on someone, so it's confusing. However he does like her quite a lot~
mAvery-- They seem to get along, surprisingly, but mAvery's a little too unpredictable...
mCasper-- Cry he fooled Avery and cut off his wings. ;o; Forever traumatized.
mDrake-- He's curious about the professor his brother seems to like so so very much. Plus mDrake carried him halfway home from the society... or so he's been told.
mHelmy-- He's sure there's something good in mHelmy, he's just distracted by how the other felt him up during that game. D8
Nóriel/Sitka-- Norrie is his dear sister figure, fellow Potterhead, and fellow Hufflepuff. Sitka intimidates him and this might never change actually seems to be getting better. He goes to them for help on figuring out his feelings for Lucy.
Oleander-- He thought they were friends, but Oleander reminds him of a territorial cat. And we all know how cats treat Avery...
Oliver-- It was a brief meeting, but another cat who doesn't attack him, and is sweet as can be? It seems almost too good to be true.
Orielle-- She's a lovely young lady but... what's this about crushing on him? Him crushing back? Please don't misunderstand, Oreo--
Ruby-- No trampolines for him, but thanks for the support! You're like an older sister by this point uhuhu.
Samhain-- His other best friend, these two are growing a bit inseparable as the days go by. Nothing's predictable with Samhain -- and that makes him both happy... and a little worried. Don't go, Sammy. :c
Sinclair-- One of his first friends on campus, though he hasn't seen the other in a while...

I won't bite! Promise! *he pat Drake's cheek as they began to gain some momentum, and he slid one foot in front of the other -- carefully* It is! So no snow drifts! Agreed?

At first, he seemed dismayed that the robe was a bit big and swamped her slight frame -- but at how her eyes lit up and she clutched it, saying it was perfect, Avery relaxed. "I'm glad! I mean... I know you like colors..." He felt he was repeating himself, honestly, rocking on his feet a little. He wondered if he could help her find some sort of hex for it, and in the mean time, he bent down to pick her jacket up from the snow, using his heat to make sure no snow clung to it, and it all melted off of it.

"Lucy, do you have anything planned for later?" he asked, looking back as he folded the cloth. "You're in the event right -- who was your date? Is?" He glanced around, wondering if he was actually intruding on something... like a game of hide and seek? Who knew, honestly. His date wasn't even set up until later on, when he'd meet Ruby at some undisclosed location... at a hill somewhere? But that wasn't for a few hours yet...
