HomesickCalista climbed easily over the rusted, wrought iron fence. She waited for her mother to do the same and they trudged toward some houses in the distance hoping to find something worth scavenging. Calista used a machete to cut down the tall grass and weeds in her path. She jumped as her blade hit something hard, her arm stinging from the impact. Moving closer, she discovered a large polished stone. It was sticking up out of the earth, engraved with a name and two dates. Taking a moment to look around she noticed the stretch of land between the forest and the houses was filled with these large slabs of rock.
“What is this place?” she asked her mother.
“It’s a graveyard.”
They paused to overlook the gentle rolling hills dotted with tombstones. Calista shivered at the sight. The land ahead of her seemed so lonely, abandoned and sad. She thought of her mother's stories of a time when the dead were buried in boxes, headstones marking their grave

When Blaming Yourself Isn't EnoughI guess after months of wearing them, the gas masks became like a hat or a coat.
You'd put it on before venturing out because you needed it, no hesitation whatsoever.
Same thing with the safety goggles. No one argued that they were, in fact, for our safety.
**
Sure, I doubted that you could die from just a lungful of air, of fresh air,
because, come on, it was safe yesterday, so why not today?
But that was before we all watched Adam, hooked up to a breathing apparatus,
(in the beginning, we joked about him being a cyborg; he laughed with us between coughing fits)
his lungs shredding with every breath until his voice disappeared,
one vowel at a time (almost as quickly as the other kids), the only sound he could muster
a wet gurgle at the back of his throat that hurt him more than he cared to admit.
His eyes were covered by those strange, white cataracts that kept growing, growing, growing,
until he couldn't blink anymore, his sight rendered useless,
and then they started t

Where Are the People?Half way through the tunnel and not a monster in sight
So far, this has been easier than I expected
Yet, I keep hearing sounds coming from behind me
Why can’t they stop following me?
I need to stop… I need a break
At least they are not in front of me
I do not have the energy to take on that army of undead
It seems like they are everywhere
Where are all of the people?
I cannot be the only one left
There is no way I intend on spending my life alone
Especially on the god forsaken planet
I think I would be better off on Mars
At least, those beings are not cannibals
Unlike these bastards… These creatures…
God… That smell… The rot
From the looks (and smell) of it, they have been through here
The devastation is just like that of the city
Everything torn to shreds
Funny, I do not see any remains either
I wonder… No… They cannot be regenerating
Nothing has the capacity to come back to life
Does it?
God… No…
I hope not… That would
