Description

Justice Society of America Redesigns, Part 4.

Name: Kara Zor-El (birth name), Karen Starr (pseudonym)

Age: 28

Species: Kryptonian

Sexual Orientation: Bisexual

Abilities: Flight, enhanced strength, invulnerability, enhanced senses, freezing breath, x-ray vision, heat vision.

Personality: Karen is a fiercely independent woman with a distinct entrepreneurial spirit. Having come from a family of scientists, she is both innovative and academic. However, she’s also known for having a short fuse and has made a habit of leading with her fists.

Friends/relationships: Helena Wayne-Bertinelli (Huntress, best friend), Michael Holt (Mr. Terrific, ex-boyfriend)

History: Faced with the extinction of their home world, Zor-El and his wife Alura sent their teenage daughter Kara to Earth to continue Krypton’s legacy.

Kara learned early on the perils that Earth faced, but realized that she had remarkable abilities that could be used to combat these evils. Donning a costume, she took on the nom de guerre Power Girl.

To protect her identity and the lives of those around her, Kara adopted the pseudonym Karen Starr, which she used to create Starr Enterprises. This cutting edge technology company has made billions and has turned Karen into the richest woman in the world.

Alongside her best friend Helena, Karen is a member of the Justice Society and works towards the greater good as one of Earth’s greatest heroes.

If you've gotten this far in the comment box, you'll probably notice something strange. In my bio for Power Girl, there's absolutely no mention of her famous cousin Superman. This is in part due to something I was referencing in my Justice Society redesigns for Green Lantern and the Flash. I'm not quite ready to divulge the backstory and mythos for the Justice Society, so you'll have to leave it up to your imagination when it comes to why Superman is absent from Power Girl's origins and why her last name is "Zor-El" (instead of the usually canon "Zor-L"). Beyond the absence of Superman, you'll notice I've decided to downplay Karen's aggressiveness only slightly in order to emphasize her intelligence. This is a woman who runs a technology company, so she damn well needs to act like one. I also like the notion that Power Girl would be regarded as one of Earth's premiere heroes. She's top tier. In my head canon, she's also bisexual, leaning most towards a preference for women. That's something I've always been a champion for with Power Girl, if only because it further helps differentiate her from Supergirl. That and it just seems to fit. Then again, if I had my way just about every superhero would be gay or bi. Haha!

Costume-wise, I'm sure you're all like "dude, this looks the same as the previous one you did a few months back." If you are thinking that, you're not wholly wrong. I really loved the design I came up with for her, feeling that it was very modern and chic. However, I did tweak it to reference my recent Superman design. You'll notice the design of the boots is different, while the blue of the costume is much darker. I also cropped her hair shorter.

I hope you all like this piece. Feel free to leave a comment below letting me know what you think of the design, character and if you have any theories as towards the "secret" mythos of the JSA I've got cooking.

Don't forget, if you'd like to see more DC Comics redesigns, head on over to my gallery!

Enjoy! :)
