Brainstorming ideas for art at future conventions

Last night I posted a post-EFNW journal and I mentioned in it that I want to expand my selection of merch being sold at cons and online from just prints. Prints are doing well, but a growing number of people seem to want to buy art in some form other than prints, some people even went so far as to say to me that they would love to buy my art but they don't buy prints anymore. I have a number of ideas for how I could expand my selection, and I think I can have some fun with this too.

At-convention Commissions and Badges

Bernd01 is bugging me a lot to do this one. I don't think it'll be as lucrative as he seems to, but I do think it would be fun and add a decent bit to my profits while I'm at it. Last year at BABScon, my first convention spent vending, I did some commissions. I did a few more at EFNW last year too, but I stopped after that. The reason? It became much too stressful for me and for such a small payout. You see, after the vendor hall closes at the convention, I spend pretty much every waking minute hanging out with friends and going places, making up for the time I'm stuck at my table all day. My workflow of selling prints at cons was pretty inefficient back then too, so I was left with essentially no time to draw during vendor hall hours. If I saved my commissions for after the hall closed, I ended up hating myself because I had to sit down and hammer out drawings and get less sleep.
Anyway, I feel like at this point I've improved both my vending organization and efficiency and also my speed and consistency at drawing, enough to start doing commissions again. Also I won't be afraid to charge more for them ($10 a commission is fucking ridiculous... I have no idea what I was thinking, no wonder I quit doing them).

Badge commissions

As an extension of the above, I want to start offering badge commissions. This means I need to work on getting some skill with color pencils and/or markers. I've heard of some artists taking badge commissions before the convention and bringing the badges to the convention for people to pick them up on the first day. I like this idea. Would any of you be interested in something like that?
This also means I need to get a small portable lamination machine of some sort.

Traditional art originals

Meanwhile, I want to start making pony traditional art. I've spent the last few semesters at my school doing only traditional art since they can't afford any computers for the art department. I still have issues with control (A lot), but I believe I have enough skill with some traditional mediums now that I could possibly create some decent paintings/drawings. These would both serve as practice for at-con commissions and also hopefully result in some original art that I could bring framed to a convention. Such an original would serve as both an example of my traditional art and as hopefully an additional way to earn a decent little extra on the side. Plus it should be fun.

Metal Prints

This is something that's been suggested to me and as time's gone on I really think it's a good idea. So what do I mean by a metal print? Well I mean literally printing directly onto a sheet of metal. I have a couple of my prints printed on metallic paper and it looks really cool, all sparkly and stuff. I can only imagine how awesome it would look on actual metal. Due to how pricey these would be to print, and to keep them a bit more interesting, I would probably only bring 2-3 metal prints to a con. I believe I can print them for about $40 each at a size slightly larger than my paper prints, so they would have to be marked up to a somewhat high price. Also, these would be a perfect thing to get signed and enter into a charity auction!
These are the two designs I (currently) have that I would want to print on metal:

Lenticular printing of animations

This is another one that I have no idea if it would work well and I would have to do some significant exploration to see how to even achieve it.
What is Lenticular printing? Have you ever seen those cards that used to be so popular that would change depending on what angle you looked at them? Usually there were two images and it would transition between them as you moved it around. Well these days I know of a website that can do this kind of printing custom, up to ten frames of animation. These aren't exactly cheap and I have no idea if anyone would even want them. But it would be an amazing way to finally be able to sell some of my favorite and most popular uploads, which I previously couldn't sell because you can't easily print animations on paper.

I only really have one thing I would want to print this way:
A war of the centuries... by DarkFlame75
The difficulty is that this animation is I believe 26-29 frames long. I would have to cut out frames to make it work on the 10 frames I have available. But then in that same line of logic, I have to ask myself if I would even really want to use all 10 frames? Maybe it would be best to have only 3, 5, or 7 frames?

Possibly also a modified/updated/cleaned up version of:
30minchallenge: Luna making a mess of things by DarkFlame75
This would be much easier to fit on a print since it's only two frames anyway. Not sure if anyone would want it though (Even after I significantly clean it up).

Very large copies of my most popular prints

Specifically a copy around 30-40 inches tall of:
Bloom of the Moon's light by DarkFlame75
or possibly even larger. The original file is 12,000 pixels, so I could pretty easily print it huge. Getting it safely to the con would be the hard part. I would probably only bring one copy of a few designs to each con and they would be marked up by kind of a lot. We're talking ~$70 or more here. Mostly because I would be getting them framed too, which isn't cheap. We'll see about this one. I don't exactly have infinite display space at my vending tables.

T-Shirts and other cloth goods

T-shirts

This is a tough one. I've been told that T-shirts are a pretty good seller in this fandom, people want them. That said, you have to have a good design for a shirt. I feel like maybe one or two of my art pieces could be used as a shirt if heavily modified, but most likely I would have to create some new designs for them from scratch and I've never made a shirt before. That wouldn't be so bad except that ordering shirts isn't cheap, and I'd have to order in bulk. We'll see about this one, it's a lower priority.

Mousepads

I've also considered mousepads. I don't actually know how much these cost to print, so I don't know how lucrative they might be, and I also don't know what the demand would be for them. They seem to disappear from other artists' tables pretty rapidly, so people must want them.

Dakimakuras?

I've even thought about doing a very, very softcore daki or two. These wouldn't be those kinds of dakimakura, they would be very SFW. Of course you still probably wouldn't want to let your mom see it, but it wouldn't be explicit at all. Someone at EFNW had some dakis that were very safe and they seemed to sell really well (Also geez, they were selling for $100 a pop, which is a lot for a daki. People really want these!)

Buttons (And small 4x6" prints)

This is a similar story to BABScon and EFNW with commissions, I stopped bringing buttons after EFNW for various reasons. Note I also didn't bring my smallest prints (4x6") to Bronycon last year for the same reasons but I've since found a much better way to handle those that actually worked well. The problem was that I was bringing about 8 designs, and I made about 25 copies of each. Buttons were just not worth the time and effort for me, since I was only making maybe $30-50 off of them and spending quite a bit of time making them. The same was true for my smallest prints.
However I realized a much better way to handle those smallest prints, and I think the same applies to my buttons. In short, I decided instead of printing a lot of a few designs, I would print a few of a lot of designs. For both BABScon and EFNW this year I brought 3-8 copies of about 36 different designs. This was pretty effective. Not only did I end up making a few hundred dollars off of them (As opposed to make several dozen dollars last year), but they were also a nice draw and a cheaper option for people who didn't want to drop $15 or had little wallspace. Not to mention it allowed me to bring a lot of artwork in very small quantities that normally I wouldn't have been able to justify printing if they were a larger size. A win-win-win!
Anyway, I got a bit sidetracked, the point is that I plan to do something similar with button designs. Instead of making 8 detailed buttons (More on that in a sec), I'll try to make a couple dozen buttons and hope that there are a few for people to end up liking.
I also think I've learned better what people like in button designs. Previously, I was designing buttons as if they were whole art pieces stuffed onto a tiny little 1.5" button, that's the wrong way to do it for obvious reasons. I think I understand much better what people want in buttons, and bonus, it's a lot easier and more fun to make anyway!

Wall Scrolls

I've seen a lot of other artists start bringing these to conventions, I'm interested in trying my hand at them myself. I have one idea for two wall scrolls that would go together (Though I've been told someone else I know is going to do something very similar this year... Doesn't matter, I'm doing it anyway), but for the most part I honestly don't know what people look for in a wall scroll. Again, here's where some feedback would be really helpful. What would you want me to make for/sell as a wall scroll? What kind of artwork would you like to see in that format? Are you even interested in wall scrolls at all?

Bookmarks

This one should actually be a really easy thing to start making/selling. I already plan to buy some paper to do my own business card printing from now on, and I figure that same paper would probably be perfectly suited to a bookmark. This should be a fun, minimal effort extra thing to add at my table.

Stickers

Some conventions ban the selling of stickers so I'm not 100% on this one, but I have access to a small sticker machine (Though I would probably be better off buying sticker paper and printing them directly). I don't think any of my current art would work well as a sticker, but I think I could make a few simple sticker designs easily enough. We'll see, this is somewhat low on the priorities. No one has asked me for stickers before and they don't seem to sell that well, so I'm not in any rush.

Keychains

Again, not sure about this one. It seems like buying some of the plastic things that hold an image for a keychain wouldn't be too hard, but I'm not sure I would like how it would look. What do you guys think of my art as a keychain?

Mini comic printed

This is a bit long for this journal so I'll just skim the details. In short, I want to make a Patreon-exclusive Student of the Night focused comic soon, and once I do that I could get a few copies printed and bring them to sell at conventions in a physical form. This is very tentative and I doubt I could get anything done in time for most conventions this year, but still an idea.

Hopefully a simple plushie or two

I've spent some time with my mom and grandma working on trying to make some plushies of our own. It's certainly a bit tough, but I just haven't had the time to really dedicate to doing it right. I would love to be able to bring a small number of plushies to conventions. I know people really want/like plushies.

Plus a few ideas I'll keep secret...

So what do you guys think of all this? I'm certain I won't branch into every one of these things. I don't have the table space to display it all at the con and I don't have the time to make something for them all. So which idea(s) is/are your favorite(s)? Do you have any other ideas to suggest for what you'd like to see sold at a convention, by me specifically?

As far as I can tell (both from observing at Bronycon last year and by reading a lot of con experiences), I think something that has more than one function may sell well. The ideas for Keychains, bookmarks, stickers, and keychains are actually a couple of ideas I'm working on myself, and like you said if you have a wide variety of them I'm sure they'd sell well. T-shirts is pretty common but again, I think they'd sell well for you because it's YOUR art on it instead of the usual thing I see when it comes to MLP clothing, which is usually something that looks like a vector from the show with some text (at least, that's what I remember seeing from Bronycon). I think the scrolls are a great idea! For those I'd suggest maybe something with the Mane 6, or with the Princesses. Anything with the Mane 6 seems to sell well as far as I'm assuming (the mane 6 posters and the one with Celestia and Luna together were my best selling large prints last year, but yeah).

I'm personally not sure about the pillow things but regular pillows may sell well enough. Have you thought about blankets? I think that'd do pretty well too, especially if they were those fluffy blankets. But that may be a bit on the expensive side.

I think the animated gif. prints would do extraordinarily well! It's a great idea, and at the very least it's an idea that should be attempted if you can do so. Of the ideas presented, I think this one is definitely worth both the cost and risk if you're able to get them printed.

As for Traditional originals, I can see that working out for you well. At the very least, having an original painting sitting on your table will bring people to a stop to come over and see it and your booth. The paintings I brought with me last year kinda acted both as pieces for sale and extra eye-catchers, and all of them ended up selling so yay! The only thing I'd say is to make sure you have a way of transporting them safely. Acrylic paintings are very durable, especially on panel, so the most you have to do with them is just buy either a small box or a couple of cardboard pieces, either plastic bags or bubblewrap, and tape to protect them when they've been sold. Also, I suggest trying out different things other than just paint when doing traditional media if you wanna try something a little different. What I did last year (and what I'm planning on doing this year) is make a painting with acrylics, glitter, and glitter glue. Maybe even make a couple of physical stuff to put on them, like origami flowers or something.

Suggestions... a couple of ideas I had was perhaps custom-made lunch boxes, but I haven't a clue as to where to get them made, or how to just make them myself. :/ I also thought of something like making mock-covers of some of my favorite video games using the canon characters of the show (example: Pinkie Pie and the Twins playing as Yoshi and Baby Mario from Yoshi's Island) or CD covers (these completely custom though).

Traveling Coffee mugs, dogtags, coasters.... That's all I can think of as of right now. o3o
