From A Tale of the Bard series

The sun was in its fullest and almost the whole blue sky was free from fluffy clouds. It wasn’t the best weather for running but still you did so, even though your throat was sore and you almost couldn’t feel your legs anymore. You ran forward not because it was the most reasonable thing to do, as no-one followed you, but it was what your heart told you to do- to be strong for someone.

The companion you were part of was the one who followed.

It required many abilities that you never had a chance to test. One had to be fast like an arrow shot from a bow but in the same time quiet and careful not to step on anything or make too many noises while passing through many bushes.

Fast, but also swift with one’s moves and try not to stumble on anything. Person’s eyes had to be directed forward, watch where they stomped and they had to spot any enemies hiding in the darkness of the forest.

And what was most important, there was no time and need for any words as it could reveal their position.

But it seemed Fate had a very bad day as you broke all the rules with one step.

Your scream broke the silence as the ground disappeared from under your feet. Before you fell into the hole you managed to grab the edge of it. Soon your hand was taken in bigger ones as their owner tried to pull you out.

“(M/n), hold on!” Legolas said as more ground crumbled and disappeared into the darkness. You could hear steps on the grass and hoped it was Aragorn and Gimli. But then the hole widened even more and both you and your companion fell inside.

The sunlight was slowly disappearing until you couldn’t see anything or hear something else than your own breathing. The only thing you could be sure of was that you were still descending more and more into the darkness. If felt like eternity but in fact it was only seconds before you found yourself at the bottom.

It wasn’t as dark as you imagined it to be because of the small rays of sun falling from the occasional holes in the cavern’s cellar. You hoped no one was living there or that you wouldn’t see them at least.

Suddenly you heard a low groan coming from under you. Your head was raised from the surface you were laying on and your eyes locked with blue ones that were owned by a certain Elf. It was when you finally understood why the ground seemed to be so warm and soft.

With a quick apologize coming from your lips you freed poor male from under your weight. As you felt too embarrassed to say anything you decided to look around for any sort of way out. There was no time for getting lost underground.

“It seems we can’t get back the same way we came.” you heard Legolas say. Your eyes followed his gaze above, to the big tunnel that you fell from. Shiver ran down your spine. It looked like a trap, as if some big and ugly creature was waiting for the food to come to him by itself.

“We should move.” his hand on your shoulder was strangely reassuring. With a small nod of your head you chose one of the many holes and walk inside, hoping that somewhere there was a way out.

The tunnel was changing its size every few meters. Sometimes you had a hard time going forward because of walls being too close to one another and very often you had to crouch to move. It was very tiring as both of you never knew what was behind yet another corner as most parts of the tunnel were covered with a shadow.

Every clearing was really disturbing too. There weren’t any bones or any traces of other creatures that could linger there but every wider space had its own tunnels. It scared you that you might have been walking in circles for the whole time.

The most important thing you had to do was to stay calm. But it wasn’t that easy as your mind was flooded with thoughts of certain death. And few hours before you were still pretty sure you would die eaten by an Ogre or being crushed under an Orc. Who knew, maybe you would die there, crushed by the ground and eaten by the insects?

You really wanted to stop thinking about that.

“Let’s stop for a moment.” Legolas said as you walked into a larger part of the cave. You sat on the ground and took a deep breath, hoping that your companion didn’t sense you panicking. After a moment of thinking and looking for a suitable way to chose you decided not to describe that adventure in your book. Or at least, change it a little bit, or maybe a bigger ‘little bit’.

“We shouldn’t linger in one place as...” you started but were cut off as you heard a growling noise coming from the darkness. Legolas reached for his bow while you just gazed in the direction the sound was coming from.

You stayed still while the creature seemed to come closer and closer. And with every second your heart was beating faster. Nothing was scarier than an unknown enemy. Especially when it was a creature that even your companion never heard about before.

The cooing was getting louder. It was such a strange sound, so soft and yet so tender. It resounded in the cave as the monster slowly revealed itself from the darkness. It was monstrous! It had neither ears nor hands. Its eyes were big and seemed to look everywhere and anywhere in the same time. And the noise seemed to come from the inside of the creature, like a dragon’s fire that came to live inside its stomach. Your stomach hurt and you couldn’t believe what you were seeing.

That big, scary monster with claws at the end of its feet, that made sounds that frozen your soul. That creature was a simple, grey bird.

A bird you had never seen before.

“What’s this...” you asked more yourself than your companion.

“I don’t know but don’t touch...” before he finished his sentence you reached to a small animal. Your hand almost touched it before your finger was bit.

“Auch!” you exclaimed while pulling your wounded limb to your heart. The creature only cooed again and tilted his head to the side as if asking what you were doing.

“I think it’s hungry.” you looked at Legolas and then again at the bird. What kind if specie it was? Your companion didn’t tell you so probably even he didn’t know.

“Could it be... a young dragon?” you asked while moving closer to the said animal.

“Dragons don’t look like that... They don’t have feathers.”

“But maybe scales appears later?” you said after a moment of thinking. If truly it was a dragon there was no way you could leave it alone in a place like that. But as you tried to take the animal in your arms it turned around and ran away.

“Wait!” you yelled after it and soon followed, ignoring Legolas screaming your name. But the more you descended into the darkness, the more you understood it wasn’t a good idea. You were certain about it in the moment walked into the room with no light coming from any side of it.

You looked around but you couldn’t remember where you came from and in which direction you were going to. And then something grabbed your hand and covered your lips so you wouldn’t scream.
“It’s me!” Legolas whispered in your ear before taking a step back.

“I can’t see anything.” you voiced the obvious thing but he didn’t say anything about it. And there was no sound made by that bird either. Both of you stood in a complete silence before Legolas took your hand in his saying that he saw something. With a nod you followed him trying to spot any stones on the ground that only waited for you to stumble over them.

You didn’t know how long you had been walking before you saw the light coming from a smaller cave. Carefully you stepped inside but to your surprise there was nothing that could be the source of the luminescence.

“Look up.” and your eyes widen. The ceiling of the cave was decorated with thousands little lights. It looked just like a night sky with many stars on it. A beautiful sight that you never expected to even exist.

And Legolas couldn’t take his eyes away from your silhouette as you never looked so beautiful and feminine as you did in that moment. With your eyes sparkling and slightly parted lips as you gazed in awe at the unexpected phenomenon.

What was he thinking about? You were a man after all. But why his heart was beating so fast?
Suddenly you heard cooing again. It was coming from deeper part of the cave. Without thinking you ran to where you thought the animal was. There was no way you lose it again. As you could hear your Elvish companion did the same and didn’t even try to stop you that time. You wouldn’t listen anyway.

Joy filled your heart as you felt that the tunnel was going up and not down. Or maybe it was your mind playing tricks on you as there was no light and no more sounds than the ones made by you and the strange bird. You heard that people went mad in unknown places that were embraced by the darkness.

But then you reached the end of the corridor carved in stone. Your hands touched the damp wall and you felt a sudden urge to start crying. There was no way out or the cooing creature, even though you could still hear it.

Suddenly a small clod of earth fell on your head. You reached your hand up to feel that it wasn’t a stone anymore and hoped that maybe you could make your own way outside.
“Come, Legolas, get me up.”

And you started digging but it wasn’t as easy as you thought. Especially when most of the soil fell on your face. But when you started to lose your hope a gust of wind touched your hand. At least one of your limbs was free. The only thing left to do was to make the hole wider. However your plans changed when you felt something grabbing your hand tightly. Shiver ran down your spine. The only thing you hoped for was that it wasn’t an Orc.

Sunrays made your head ache as the light was still too bright even though the sun was slowly setting down. As the hole was made wider you were pulled outside only to see Aragorn’s face and Gimli digging with his axe.

You didn’t remember the time you were so happy to see both of them. Without thinking you threw your hands around Aragorn’s neck and embraced him like there was no tomorrow. He was very surprised of your actions as for a longer moment he didn’t know how to behave. Eventually, he gave you a small pat on the back before you understood that it wasn’t the time for physical contact.

“What’s on your head, lass?” suddenly you heard Gimli’s voice. Ignoring him calling you a female you tilted your head back only to see a pair of big dark eyes looking directly into yours.

“Gruuu.”

“Oh, here you are!” the bird flew from your head to your shoulder and didn’t seem to want to leave it for a longer moment. You could see that two of your companions sought an explanation which made you and Legolas smile.

That was a story you were willing to tell but with a few additional events that might or might not had occurred.

... And as we hid in the dark the mysterious creature was waiting somewhere in one of the many tunnels. But which one would lead us to the freedom and which to the death? The soft cooing was nowhere to be heard, the strange animal was our only chance to survive. Suddenly the ground shook furiously as the monster changed its position. It was getting closer to our position and when we thought it was a time to fight, a wall of fire appeared before us...

Legolas finally understood why you loved to change the truth just ‘a little bit’. The look on your friends’ faces was magnificent. And even your new friend looked proud of itself.

“And that’s how Dragon saved us.”

But he couldn’t understand why you chose that name.

Yey, you caught a Pigeon. How are you feeling with that?
Something small I wrote for the series so the main plot wouldn't do too fast ;> and sadly it was made quickly as I was too busy with packing this weekend ^^'.

Also, I couldn't find any information about pigeons in Tolkien's universe so I decided to make it a 'mysterious creature'. I don't know how long the new friend will tag along (you can tell me if you would like it to even do that in the comment XD) and if it will then I probably will just wrote about it as a 'pigeon' or use it's name.

And now a very important information: I'm not here for the whole week. That's why I don't know if I will manage to write next chapter 'till Sunday so the story can be updated in the middle of the week.

Yep, I think that's all.

As always I hope for some feedback and that you will have a wonderful day
