Rodrick grew up in quite the wealthy family. His twin brother Aeren, little sister Linly-Mae and himself were raised to be good kids and were given everything they needed by a loving father; a normal family, leading their normal life in the capital. In his youth, he enjoyed running around the neighborhood with Aeren, playing tricks on everybody and exploring the whereabouts.

Every now and then, the twins would find a stray dog, as they are not so unusual in the city, and Rod would bring it home. Then he would sulk for a little while when told to put it back where he found it. He would hide cereals in his pockets and take it to the spot where he left his new little friend, which of course he didn’t always find again--many tears and sobbing would then ensue.

Later on, he started following his father at work but soon enough there were so many complains from the patients about him lying all day long that he decided to take his leave from nursing and tackle odd jobs instead. Nothing really fulfilling but hey, all he wanted was some pocket money and that was enough for him.

After he said his goodbyes to his sister as she took the train to Toffee Town, while on his way back he was sharing his worries with his brother : was she going to be okay ? Was she going to feel lonely ? What if something happened ? What if she forgot something important ? And what if this was all a scam ? Big brothers will always be big brothers and they do have a tendency to be overprotective, don’t they… When he arrived home, seeing the flyer she left on the kitchen’s table, it didn’t take more than a second for him to make up his mind : he was going to follow her to Toffee Town.

Rodrick took the boat the very next day, feeling as excited as he felt worried. The biggest regrets hit him the moment the boat left the docks, to Aeren’s greatest amusement : that day, Rodrick Slen learned that he had seasickness.

He was already having a hard time keeping his last meal from showing up when his twin came up with an important question, which he shout while waving his arms frenetically : 

“Hey ! What’cha gonna do once you get there ! If you don’t come back here swimming in the next five minutes, that is !” 

A question to which he had not given much thoughts, actually. The answer, however, came out naturally and was spoken in a weak voice that barely made its way to Aeren’s ears : 

“P-Pet shop. I’ll look for work at a pet sho—uuuuuuuugh…”.
“Why am I not surprised ?” His brother replied with a laugh before he ran to the end of the docks in order to follow the boat and be close enough to add “If you can’t find work at a pet shop, try a clinic or the hospital or something ! You’ll be adorable as a nurse ! Ya know, with the little hat and the apron and all !”
“What are you talking about ! I’m not gonna wear an apr—ough….!!”

At the docks, Aeren grimaced despite his laughs while on the boat, a few disgusted voices rose in the fresh air before a certain seasick man’s meal finally returning for everyone to see. This was going to be a long ride. Maybe the longest one of his life.

-He keeps everything he is given forever (of course if it is food he’s going to eat it pfft) unless it is something he dislikes or hates, in which case the gift goes straight in the trash without a second thought.
