What do I see here? 

Well, assimilation works both ways. The reason why we feel the need to assimilate is because we are confronted with what we do not understand - better yet, what we are not. There's no specific reason given as to why we are the way we are or why the other is not. Sometimes it's as simple as our geography and chronology. At the end of the day, the more interaction we have with the Other, the more familiar we are with them. And the more we push back, the more we are forced to come face to face with what we do not understand. At the end of the day, what prompts change and assimilation is the reduction of fear of the unknown and the understanding of the other.
