Soulmate!AU where the world is in black and white until you meet your soulmate



The coffee machine whirled on as you wiped the work station again, making sure the counter was spotless as you hummed along to the song playing in the background. It was still rather early on in the day, the weather outside cooling enough to attract some customers in for a hot drink.

You welcomed a young couple who just entered the cafe, taking their order with a polite smile on your face. From the looks they gave each other, it was very obvious they were soulmates. Just by looking at them, you could see the love they shared and it was nice to know that there were still people who found their significant other amongst the many people out there who never had the opportunity to.

Those were the people who would forever live in a black and white world.

Sometimes you wondered what colors looked like. You were taught that the sun was yellow and grass was green. But in the end, the beautiful colors that people described would always stay on the same monochromatic spectrum unless you found your soulmate.

Handing the customers their drinks, you returned to organizing the station to prepare for the busy lunch hour that was sure to come. You were lost in your own thoughts and didn't hear someone approach the counter until they called out to you again.

"Hello, I'd like to order please!"

The sound of that voice made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside but you pushed aside the weird feelings, moving over to the counter to attend to the customer.

"Sorry, I didn't notice you there. How may I help you?"

Looking up, you let out a gasp. The guy standing across of you had striking features; his face was boyish, spiked hair giving him a cool look, and the way he carried himself just gave off an aura of confidence. But what made your heart pause momentarily, was his eyes. They weren't black, white, or any shade you've ever known.

Slowly, everything around you started to change.

Colors beyond your wildest imagination painted the world around you, and the sudden change made your head spin, causing you to bump against the counter.

"Are you okay?!" 

"Yeah… just a little bit… overwhelmed, that's all. "

His worried expression morphed into a grin as he introduced himself. "I'm Nishinoya Yuu!"

"I'm [Name]," you told him, pointing to the name tag on your shirt. Under his gaze, you couldn't help but fidget.

"You're really cute, you know?" 

Blushing furiously, you immediately changed the subject. "Erm, would you like to order something?"

Nishinoya chuckled at your actions, choosing a random drink off the menu. You nodded and turned to make his drink, but when you faced the work station you were so accustomed to, you froze, realizing that everything looked so different and you couldn't recognize the ingredients and containers without looking closely to read the labels. 

"Hey, is something wrong?"

Letting out a nervous string of laughter, you glanced sheepishly at him.

"I can't remember where everything is with all these colors."

i feel like having everything around you suddenly change would really be overwhelming. like if suddenly everything became black and white, we'd probably be super shocked and all so i imagine that the opposite would hold true as well haha. idk just some thoughts i had while writing this. >u<

Reading this fic made me realise that the other fics I've read where colours are used to identify one's soulmate never actually pointed out how disorienting it was to suddenly be bombarded with colours so this fic is reather thoughtful and unique!:)
