Description

Note: this will most likely be updated before the deadline with a few minor tweaks. I'm uploading now because today is a wee bit uncertain, and I want to make sure my bases are covered.

:iconseconddraftoct:
If I'm completely honest, I'm never quite sure what to put on a ref sheet.
Let me know if I'm missing anything in particular you'd like to know.

Character Playlist

Setting
Grim and Ivy are major characters from the 'Dual Kingdoms of Fate' series of fantasy novels, a series following the heroic exploits of the Hero of The Kingdoms and his spirit of bravery as he repeatedly rescues the sweet but imperilled Princess Ivy and her Kingdom of Light from the crazed machinations of Dark Lord Grim of the Dark Kingdom.
Fans of the series speak highly of its rich, detailed world building and joyful escapist bent, but critics commonly find fault in how formulaic the stories are and how limited the characterisation is.
They are more correct than they realise.

The Compulsion
When the focus of the narrative falls on a character, the narrative will force that character into the role set for them. Characters compelled like this cannot act out of character, and find themselves going through the motions and carying out the actions required for the story.
With cunning, forethought and practise, the confines of the narrative Compulsion can be stretched, but not broken. Ivy and Grim have learned this well, and were able to derail their narrative into a fatal one by planning in advance while the narrative eye was off them, and framing their actions as in character ones.

Princess Ivy
  • Theme Song: Marina & The Diamonds, "Numb"
  • 5'11"
  • Human
  • Ruler of the Light Kingdom: Despite being a princess, Ivy does not actually have living, ruling parents.
  • Abilities and equipment:
    • Sweet Faced Spymaster: adept in spying, social manipulation and Machiavellian strategy, and very clever and cunning.
    • Trained as a Sage: while she has no magical ability of her own, Ivy is trained and experienced in using magical artefacts, primarily for scrying, warding and protection. She has brought a number of small artefacts with her.
    • Secretly Prepared For This: because they deliberately baited the librarians into recruiting them, Ivy has prepared. She is wearing sensible pants and sturdy boots beneath her dress, and she's smuggled in a variety of small pieces of equipment in pockets sewn into her petticoats.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Thou Mustn't Stain Thy Sweet Hands, Princess:     As a princess, and one in a bad fantasy novel, Ivy's role has kept her far from combat experience. She has sought out training, and has practised with knives, swords and bows, but while she is athletic and quick minded, she is not a seasoned combatant, and she knows it.
    • Run? In That Dress?: Ivy is fit, but doesn't have superhuman strength or endurance. Additionally, the large dress she wears may impede her.

Dark Lord Grim

  • Theme Song: Mumford and Sons "Tessellate" (A cover of the Alt-J song)
  • 8'0"
  • Crypt Lord
  • Ruler of the Dark Kingdom: Dark Lord is the ruling title.
  • Abilities and Equipment:
    • Necromancer and Bone Dancer: Grim is trained in the necromantic arts of his people, including the royal talent of shape-shifting into bone creatures.
    • Paperwork and Bureaucracy Enthusiast: Grim is an EXCELLENT civil servant, and is talented at reading, writing and editing all kinds of legal documents. This is likely completely useless in the current fighting tournament.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Soft Hearted: Grim will hesitate to land cruel blows, or to finish off an opponent. He will attack an opponents unexpected if he feels he must, but he'll certainly have qualms about it.
    • More of a Figurehead Than a Fighter: Grim is a trained and experienced fighter, but only really fights when the narrative has compelled him to act as a villain. As a result, he is a little awkward and uncertain when normally fighting, or when in bone monster form.
  • Trivia
    • As you will have no doubt noticed, most of the time, Grim wears the cloak over his armour, effectively hiding its infuriating complexity and detail. You're welcome.
    • As ceremonial head of the Dark Kingdom's necromantic magical orders and as a ruler, Grim has intricate tattoos covering his chest and back.
    • edit: I actively encourage you to completely bullshit any armour or monster form details for Grim that your heart desires. I'm making it up as I go along anyway. :D
