Description
In honor of the Metal Gear series coming to a close, I've painted something for each canon game in the saga.
This one is for the second game in the series, 1990's Metal Gear 2 for the MSX2, not to be confused with the non-canon NES sequel, Snake's Revenge. To continue the comparison to the Legend of Zelda, this is the series' "a Link to the Past" as it takes the original formula and improves on it in every manner. It's far more accessible than Metal Gear, with tighter mechanics, prettier visuals, and a full plot with meaningful twists and political and philosophical themes.
The plot revolves around a miracle microbe that can solve the energy crisis. The Czech biologist responsible for the microbe, Dr. Kio Marv, is kidnapped and held hostage by a military nation called Zanzibar Land, seeking to control the organism and subsequently the fate of global economics. This is where the Metal Gear formula is truly defined and it's very much worth a look in spite of its age.
Like with the characters in the first game, I had very little concept art to go off of. Thankfully, every main protagonist has profile pictures (most based on actual actors from the time) but everything else was sprite artwork. For the bosses, I went for a more GIJOE feel to their designs, which felt appropriate to the late 80s feel the game has.

Colonel Roy Campbell is Snake's commanding officer and the current leader of FOXHOUND.
Master MacDonnel Miller is FOXHOUND's drill instructor and your survivalist contact.
George Kasler is a mercenary and your main contact for information on the bosses.
Johan Jacobsen is an environmentalist and an expert on the flora and fauna of Zanzibar Land.
Dr. Madnar, Russian roboticist, is once again a hostage for Snake to rescue.
Dr. Kio Marv, Czech biologist and creator of the OILIX microbe. His rescue is one of Snake's primary objectives.
Gustava Heffner, former Olympic figure skater and one of Snake's contacts who has infiltrated Zanzibar Land as a soldier.
Holly White, another insider and a journalist. She knows a lot of information about Zanzibar Land.
Solid Snake, once again called in to make the impossible possible.
Gray Fox, former colleague to Snake, now working for Zanzibar Land.
Big Boss, former head of FOXHOUND, now the leader of Zanzibar Land. Once considered the world's greatest soldier, he is now global enemy number one.
Black Ninja is one of Zanzibar Land's mercenaries and someone from Snake's past.
Running Man is a French terrorist and a master of using his great speed to set traps.
Red Blaster is former GRU spetsnaz and a master assassin. He employs grenades.
Jungle Evil is a guerrilla tactician from South Africa and a master of using the wild to ambush his targets.
Night Fright has a form of optical camouflage and no one has ever seen his face.
