General Task 2: Prickly Patrol

-Max’s POV-

*Yawn~*

I couldn’t help but yawn loudly with my drowsiness slowly overwhelming me. It’s almost midnight, and I volunteered to do the patrolling around the camp along with several other teams. We divided into different squads around the perimeter and I have Daisuke and Princeton along with me.

And frankly, Princeton followed almost immediately and yawned.

“You two are tired already?” asked the eyes-half-closed Pikachu next to us.

“I don’t usually stay up this late,” answered the Nuzleaf, who almost had his eyelids closed.

I yawned again.

“You don’t ever feel tired, are ya, Dai?” I asked.

“Nope,” Daisuke answered casually. “I love nighttime.”

Maybe I’m wrong, somehow I think Daisuke looks a lot more active at night then daytime since we got out here in the desert. I swear, he’s more like a Zubat then a Pikachu the way he fears light out here.

Professor!

I stopped walking the second I noticed the voice from behind and turned around, and noticed the capped Sandshrew standing behind me, holding some building materials.

“Flint, I told you don’t call me professor when I’m not in the classroom!” I impatiently said.

“Sorry~ I just got used to it,” he chuckled.

Ever since the City College hired me to lecture on the Explorer 101 courses, mons started calling me “Professor” outside the school. I maybe a lecturer inside the classroom, but I’m still an Explorer outside. I’d rather they just address me with my name as an explorer instead of a teacher. Alas, there are mons who just can’t get rid of the bad habit.

“Anyway,” I tried to change subject. “What are those stuff you have there for?”

“Traps,” he answered. “I’m gonna set them somewhere around the camp so the patrol’s job can be easier.”

“Ohhh, that sounds fun! Can I come?” Daisuke’s eyes instantly opened wide with sparkles shining inside.

“Sure! Always needed an extra set of hand,” Flint cheerfully said. “How ‘bout you two?”

“I’ll pass,” answered Princeton, “I just wanna finish this quickly and go to sleep.”

“Well, I…”

“Oh, don’t try to deny it, it’s written all over your face that you wanna come along,” Daisuke commented before I could say a word.

I sweat dropped. Am I really that readable??

“Still, we can’t leave Princeton do the patrol alone, can we?” I asked with concern.

Daisuke thought for a moment. “I’ma go wake up that sleepy-ass of a partner of mine,” he deviously smiled.

“Dai, wait!” Princeton shouted, but Daisuke already rushed off. I don’t think he even heard a single word Princeton said.

Moments later, a sharp scream echoed around the camp.

“DAISUKE, WHAT THE HELL!?”

The three of us looked at each other and sweat dropped.

* * * * *

Looking at the quick sketch of a map Flint drawn, I chose a fairly remote path right outside the camp to plant the trap. Much to my surprise, Flint’s materials happened to include something very interesting.

“What is this?” I saw the round object on the pile Flint left on the ground and asked. I casually picked it up and examined it.

“Watch it with that stuff, it’s a bomb,” Flint responded, turning away from the map he and Daisuke were holding.

“!” I slowly place it back on the pile with my adrenaline suddenly rushed up.

“That is a prototype Spelon Bomb I made a short while ago,” Flint explained. “It has extra spicy Spelon Berry powder stuffed in it with some local cactus thorns. Get caught in the blast and you’ll find yourself in an unpleasant surprise.”

I can feel my hairs standing while listening to him, and Daisuke looked fairly excited by the stuff.

“See this pin up here? You pull it up and throw it out like a grenade and it’ll go boom in three seconds. You can also trigger it with a tripwire, too!”

And that just gave me an idea.

* * * * *

After setting up the trap together, the three of us retreated to a nearby cactus and watched.

“You sure this’ll work?” asked Daisuke.

“Trust me, it will,” I replied with confidence. “I will guarantee that they’ll never walk this path again once it’s triggered.”

“Shh! Someone’s coming!” Flint whispered, and asked us to stay down.

A Gabite swiftly approached the camp under the cover of night. He silently tapped on the sand trail, trying not to make a noise. He deviously smiled while he looked around and saw no one around, thinking he’s still stealthy enough not to get noticed while getting to the camp.

Unfortunately for him, his luck, like his smile, didn’t last long. His feet suddenly tripped on the first wire I deployed and faceplanted on the ground. As he fell, his body pressed on the second tripwire and released two Spelon Bomb rolling next to him.

He groaned as he lift up his face, then his eyes grow large when he saw the bomb in front of his face.

“HOLY FU—”

*Boom! Boom!*

Two huge explosion echoed through the field. We waited until the dust settled and walked to see the result.

“Wow, I’m impressed, Max!” Flint commented in amazement. “That worked a lot better than I thought!”

“You and I both,” I replied, looking at the passed out Gabite, faceplanted on the ground with thorns all over him.

“Now those bozos wouldn’t dare take this path again,” Daisuke commented.

“Just to be sure, we’ll set one or two more down the path and let’s call it a night,” Flint said.

I yawned again. “That’s great, ‘cause I’m tired… uh?”

While I yawn, I tend to lift my head up, and I happened to take a glimpse at something flying high up in the sky. For some reason, I think whatever it was was staring at us from above.

“What’s wrong?” Daisuke asked, noticing my head stayed upward.

“No, nothing, let’s move on,” I replied and shook my feeling off. I might be too tired at the time and started seeing stuff.

->Part 2: Rescue on the Rock (Part 1)

Reward: Volbeam, 3 Star Coins

For :iconpmdunity:

Oh Daisuke, you just can't leave Masa alone with his narcolepsy, can you?

To keep the story flowing, I'm going to mix up the orders of each task. So now we are doing General 2 and the next one could be Explorer 1.

Max, as an experienced explorer, can be very resourceful at times. He often use as little materials as possible to build stuff 'cause he believes that less is more simple. And Max is also the kind who believes "If it's worth do it, it's worth overdo it." That explains why he ended up using two bombs instead of one in the trap.

Enjoy! :D
