She’d just finished up a mission when Alexi called. She’d been busy counting her monies, dried, purple blood still on her hands when the com-link light flashed, the annoying ring tone of the her teacher blaring over the speakers. “Alexi, what do you want?” she demanded when she accepted the call. She sighed as the hologram of Alexi’s head came up on the console. It was stationary, just showing who it was that had called her. She wanted to punch the hologram, but she had too much cash in her hands. She continued counting as the former Tallest greeted her.

“Hello to you too, Keita.” His voice was gravely as usual, like he’d been smoking – which he probably had been. “As to why I’m calling you, I wanted to see how your mission went.”

“Swimmingly,” she responded. “As in he was swimming in his own blood when I was done with him.” She cracked a grin at the thought. She’d been after a high bounty target, meant to be brought in dead rather than alive. She always thought it was more fun to go after the bounties that allowed you to kill. The Irken in particular hadn’t put up much of a fight in the alleyway she’d cornered him in and his head had bounced a few times after she’d decapitated him. She chuckled lightly at the memory. “I took a selfie with his head, do you want me to send it to you?”

He grumbled something about ‘technology’ and ‘selfies are stupid’ for a moment before getting back on track. “I’m glad it went well. I trust you’re enjoying her monies. I’ve got something new lined up for you now though…” he trailed off, allowing her to take the bait and grow curious.

“What this time?” she asked, her antennae perking up, obviously intrigued. “Does it pay better?”

“Much better. The prize is a whole planet this time.”

“What am I going to do with a planet?” she scoffed. “You think I want a whole planet to myself or something?”

“I heard its rich in minerals, you could probably sell it for several trillion monies and then live off the royalties for the rest of your life.” Alexi explained. “All you have to do is enter a tournament and win.”

“Alexi, you can’t be serious,” Kei groaned, leaning back in the pilot’s jump seat of her voot cruiser. “You want me to enter a tournament?”

On the other end of the com-link the former Tallest cleared his throat. “Keita, it isn’t just any tournament. Blood Sport is one of the biggest tournaments in the Empire. It’s an excellent chance for you to test your skills and show off. Think of all the jobs you’ll get if you make it to the finals?”

“You mean live that long?” she responded, cocking a brow at the underlying comment. “You know that it’s a death tournament, right? I looked it up.” She glared at the holographic image of Alexi’s head. “You expect me to enter a death tournament, of my own volition.”

“It’s not like you fear dying,” Alexi responded casually.

It was true, Kei had been through so much shit in her life, that she didn’t fear death, she almost welcomed it if it would erase her memories and stop the nightmares. She narrowed her eyes and frowned. “Alexi, this is stupid.”

The exiled Tallest sighed heavily. “Kei, I’m not giving you a choice.”

A low growl escaped her throat. “Who the fuck made you my master?” she demanded, shooting out of her seat to stand, rocking the ship considerably, monies flying everywhere as the slips of paper escaped her hands. She stabbed an accusing finger at the hologram – even though he couldn’t see her. “You aren’t allowed to give me orders like that. I don’t care if you’re my teacher or not.”

Alexi sighed once again and Kei could hear some audible clicks coming from the other end of the link.

Suddenly, the voot changed course. It had completely turned around and was heading toward a part of space that Kei rarely visited. Kei panicked as the voot’s controls displayed “AUTOPILOT LOCKED” on all the screens. She tried to take back over the controls, but all her efforts were fruitless. Her voice high pitched with anxiety, she nearly screamed: “What are you doing?!”

“Doing what needs to be done,” Alexi replied calmly and evenly. Her panic didn’t faze him one bit.

His smooth demeanor did nothing but increase her anxiety. “Alexi, please,” she begged. “Please don’t do this. Please don’t send me to Blood Sport.”

There was silence for a moment. “Keita, I don’t have a choice.” And then the communications link went dead, the dial tone sounding through the cabin of her ship.

Kei sat back, her eyes wide and lost. She was going to Blood Sport, and there was no stopping it… Fuck.
