That night, Nadya dreamed of a cream coloured yearling.
Her hooves seemed to sparkle in the night shadows. They pattered through the sand, but the distance between them never seemed to change. Her mane was made of moonbeams, and her pale lashes fluttered when she turned back to look at him.
More than anything, he wanted a horse. A horse would bring honour to his clan, and security to his family. So few were ever partnered with a horse they would live, train, and care for for the rest of their lives. Even fewer would have a horse choose them.
He slipped out from under the bedskin and got to his feet. The brisk night air brushed across his face as he pushed aside the felted tent flap. The moons were high in the sky and silence permeated the village. His eyes adjusted to the darkness as he walked past the edge of the dark tents.

The thin soles did little to protect his feet from the sand which burned in the daytime and froze in the night. He crested the hill and looked out over the desert expanse. It was empty to his eyes, but his heart could feel the yearling.
