At first impression, Gail comes across as a difficult, rather unpleasant person. At greater depth, it transpires that this is true.

Gail's personality is rooted in a deep introspection - she is acutely, painfully aware of her own state of mind. But while it may appear that this, combined with her experiences, has made Gail selfish, this is not the most accurate depiction of how her introversion manifests. Rather, Gail's self-image, interactions with others, and general attitude to life is absolutely concerned with control.

During Gail's years at the mercy of both her imperfect Innocence and the Order's experimentation, she came to resent the control both from her. Her immobilised Innocence refused to respond to her, and she felt the Order only saw her as an experiment. This helped make a difficult, unsympathetic child into a jaded, resentful young adult, culminating in the desperate attempt to destroy her Innocence that led to its activation. Now, however, she faces a problem. Since activating her Innocence, she has physically freed herself from it, most of the Order's experiments, and even from the grounds of the Order itself on exorcist missions. This sudden change highlighted to Gail how her own behavior may shape her destiny. In an effort to explain it to herself - the difference between control she has and control she doesn't - Gail seeks to explore the extent to which she can control her surroundings. Due to her introversion and the smallness of the world she remembers, she is interested in her immediate world.

Gail's 'experiments' in self control vary from body modification and gluttonous overeating to meditation. Physically, she seeks to validate that her Innocence can no longer control her, and explore the boundary between her physical self and it. She sees it as an alien entity to her natural state that will seek to control her again if she allows it do. In fact, she perceives the whole idea of synchronisation with her Innocence as allowing it dangerous power over her. Hence, she feels she would be at risk if she allowed her awareness of her physical and mental boundaries to fade, and takes measures to keep it crisp. In a way, she expects physical death to be the greatest limit, and understands that if she is truly to understand her boundaries she must come as close to it as possible, although this is not really an appealing prospect.

Most of Gail's interactions with others are also as though they are temporary entrants into her so-felt 'inner world'. She will seek to use them as experiments in the extent of her control, ensuring of course that they will eventually leave. This desire manifests as Gail attempts to manipulate the emotions of those around her, usually for the negative. She enjoys seeing her effect on the world at work, particularly in the form of disgust or discomfort. As she is the centre of her own sphere of influence, Gail does not care much for others' thoughts or opinions beyond what she can provoke, and despises the notion of sharing control over her life through friendship. This is also why she does not like working with other exorcists on missions, although she acknowledges battle is more effective that way.

But that does not mean Gail is inhuman. It is possible to befriend her if one demonstrates a determination similar to hers - to control ones own destiny. This may be through battle, or through a willingness to share her experiments. Her respect does not come through sheer resistance to her 'charms', and her base personality will not change in the presence of a friend. She will, however, grow to understand and appreciate them through their effect on her. Gail does consider a friend's emotions, and will attempt to improve their mood, rather than ruin it. She will also actively seek their company while refusing to acknowledge that this is the case, much like a rather nasty cat. Gail at present does not have any friends.

She keeps her emotions very bottled up and private. At present, Gail does not have a healthy method of releasing tension, although she tells herself this is unnecessary. She may inadvertently be overly vindictive in her manipulations or harsh in her physical restrictions.

Interests: gothic literature and theatre, wood carving (particularly flowers), gossip, celluloid film, body modification
Likes: thunderstorms, sugary alcohol, doing her own hair, candlelight, violas, complicated practical jokes, luxury
Dislikes: crowds, walking within the earshot of others (her leg squeaks), hammocks, overly enthusiastic people
Quirks: taking her prosthetic leg off when in the company of others to purposely disconcert them, taking up the whole couch for herself, has a bizarrely extensive knowledge of international myths regarding death and death gods, holds her alcohol remarkably well, no one has ever seen Gail sleep, will sometimes carry her camera around the order to film people without their permission (although no one is sure what she does with the film).

P r o f i l e ;

Affiliation: Black Order
Base of Operations: European Branch (HQ)
Occupation: Exorcist
Mentor: n/a
Partner(s): n/a
Golem: a black ovular golem with a pointed tail. She doesn't name the golems because they are so frequently broken due to her inability to protect them, and disregard for communication with headquarters. She has a collection of them that tend to fly around her room when unattended.

Preferred Mission Types: solo, in urban areas with minimal combat.

Limitations/Punishments: Gail's physical limitations prevent her from engaging in effective battle outside a very narrow set of circumstances. She is also frequently restrained by the Science Division for experimentation on her Innocence or maintenance on her leg, which confine her to the Order Headquarters.

Innocence NameOle Lukkøye's gave [Sandman's Gift]
Innocence Type: unclear (initially parasitic, but now functions primarily as equipment-type)
Syncronization Rate: 59%
Deactivated Form: An adapted long seaxe (Scandanavian knife) with a 48cm blade. The blade appears to be made in the texture, weight, and general appearance of bone (despite being too flat, wide, and seamless for this to be theoretically possible considering the hollow nature of bone). If this material is inspected thoroughly, hairline fractures along the length of the blade are visible. The femur head is partly capped in silver metal and melded to a one-hand-width handle of the same material. The handle ends in an small cross, with a sharpened vertical section suitable for use as a small knife.

Level 1 | tonge lokk
The Innocence glows a slight sickly green in this initial activation stage, wherein it can be used as a regular knife.

  • [ mors kyss ] Upon activation, the blade widens slightly. In this process, the aforementioned tiny cracks in the blade's bone surface open, allowing a substance biologically similar to bone marrow to leak through. This substance acts as a potent poison against an akuma (or human)'s senses, leaving them vulnerable to Gail's relatively weak attack prowess.

+ This mode is unstable, and the ultimate effect of the blade's strike is highly variable. It may hinder one sense greatly, or many senses a little, or even less. Gail cannot control this. The effect, however, is cumulative. At its current maximum power, Gail may render a level 1 entirely senseless within 8 strokes.

+ The poison is only effective on humans (or Noah) if taken internally (e.g. into the bloodstream). Akuma up to level 2 may be affected by simple physical contact. At, or above that level, cutting is necessary. It is ineffective except in impractically massive doses at level 3 or higher.

+ Gail is the only being on whom this poison is ineffective.

+ The effect wears off on humans, with or without Innocence, within a maximum of 12 hours, depending on exposure. If left alone on any given surface, the substance will crystallize into small, green crystals permanently. Because of this, Gail must frequently clean her weapon to prevent damage.
  • [ vuggesang ]  Gail can focus the production of poison, and hence the effectiveness of any given blow through intense concentration. The best manner of concentration is a brief period of meditation, which makes it quite ineffective for use mid-battle.

+ As before, the potency of the poison itself is variable, so even with this technique the effect of the poison on a target may be minimal. It does, however,             help improve the cumulative effect and hence the chances of success. Gail insists that this move also increases the strength of poison, although in                         experimental  conditions this has yet to be confirmed.

+ In practice situations, Gail can almost appear to fall asleep using this technique. In actuality, she does not. This leads to some excellent pranking potential.

Level 2 Release | drømmeløs natt
Due to Gail's low synchronisation rate, this level is difficult for her to attain and maintain. The blade's cracks widen further to allow for a slightly increased rate of poison production, but this can make it more fragile and vulnerable to unintentional cracking only rectifiable by what resembles the human healing process over time. Gail often states that her phantom limb pains are similar to those of a healing bone, although the Science Division wonders if this is entirely true or merely for effect.

Although its movements and abilities are still relatively identical to the previous level, Gail prefers to separate them due to the new move's strange side effects. This may or may not be representative of a true level 2 release.
  • [ søvngjenger medisin ] This move allows Gail to convert any bodily substance (human or otherwise) that comes into contact with her blade into poison.

+ Blood appears to be the most potent poison, when converted. Other substances (e.g. sweat, saliva) tend to be less so, in approximate order of importance to life. Gail's own fluids are the most effective. At this level, it is possible to affect level 3 Akuma by surface contact.

+ When fighting in this mode, Gail and anything else that comes into contact with the poison occasionally experience a short, simultaneous alteration in consciousness, wherein both experience a flashback to a Gail's near death experience. This event often disorientates an enemy for up to five minutes, who also experiences the emotions and pain Gail felt at the moment in question, but allows her to retain her present day lucidity.

+ Gail can convert Akuma blood oil to poison as well, enabling her to easily destroy level 1s by using them as 'poison bombs', which affect nearby Akuma as they explode.

+ The specifics of the flashback are not consistent, and Gail often notes that they are more consistent with her nightmares of the                   event, rather than the actual historical facts. She has refused to report this to the science division, instead choosing to investigate its               properties herself.

NoteGail's Innocence was by birth parasitic. It was presumably manifest in her bone marrow, and she frequently suffered from mild anemia. She could never activate it in its parasitic state, however, and it was only when she accidentally treated it as a parasitic type (by shaping it into an external weapon) that she could synchronize. In the present day, its association with Gail's blood (among other physical substances) and crystaline features lead some to consider it a very imperfect crystal-type Innocence.

It is altogether possible that due to the odd process of its creation, Gail will never be able to access her Innocence's true potential, including the critical point.

The Innocence's imagery is based on a combination of dreams and control - its powers at present do not reflect what it could become, should Gail be able to (and desire to) synchronize further.

| Background

H i s t o r y O u t l i n e ;

Early childhood: Suffered frequently from anemia and thin blood

Age 11: Leg broken in household accident, fails to heal due to infection-like green crystals that constantly appear in wound and surrounding flesh

Age 12: Taken to Asian branch, confined to wheelchair due to permanently broken bone, completely unable to synchronise

Age 17: Undergoes voluntary amputation of Innocence-afflicted leg, accidentally synchronises with Innocence while attempting to destroy the remains, fails to cooperate with Order attempts to investigate her method

Age 18: Transfers to European branch, reluctantly certified as an exorcist

Age 20: Experiences first flashback during activation of apparent (but not actual) level 2 release, begins investigation into possible alternate properties of her Innocence

H i s t o r y ;

Gail's parents were Norwegian immigrants to Australia. Her father arrived in the mid nineteenth century to work in the gold fields on the east coast, and her mother arrived with her family shortly after. They met, married, and had their first child, Gail. They eventually migrated west to join her father's freed, ex-convict cousin in the small town of Perth, who promised them cheap farmland and cooler weather. Her mother gave birth to twin sons shortly after arriving, much to the dismay of their sickly, withdrawn elder daughter, used to 11 years of independence, not babysitting.

In the process of building her family's timber house on their new land, a log fell off the back of their wagon, badly crushing Gail's legs. While she recovered from most of her injuries as could be expected, her left leg failed to do so. Instead of merely blood and bone marrow, the bone appeared to also secrete/bleed an unidentified greenish substance that quickly crystalised in or around the wound and bone. This made proper healing impossible, leaving Gail with essentially a high-maintenance open wound, alongside a permanently broken leg. Although doctors believed infection and subsequent death was inevitable, the crystal substance appeared to break down or act as a barrier to foreign contaminant. It did, however, cause Gail significant pain and mobility issues.

A few months later, a roving exorcist was attracted by rumours of a strange green, slightly glowing medical condition. Identifying the substance as Innocence, they recommended Gail be taken to the Asian Branch of the Black Order, where her condition could be properly investigated. The Asian Branch was chosen over the closer Oceanic branch due to its larger size and greater resources. Her parents agreed that the circumstances were too much for them to handle, and allowed her to join the Order. The following five years consisted of fruitless attempts to synchronise with her Innocence - despite its parasitic appearance, Gail had no affinity with it at all. Wheelchair-bound during this time, she performed some administrative duties, and occasionally assisted the Science Division.

Gail became fascinated with body modification aged 13, when she met a Science Division worker with bound lotus feet. This inspired Gail to research similar modifications in other cultures. She soon began wearing a corset, after being disappointed that her parents' culture lacked similarly dramatic modifications, and aiming to eventually achieve a 14" waist.

After five years of being unable to synchronise, being unable to move freely, experiencing daily pain, and going through useless Order experiments, Gail began to resent her lack of control over her own situation. She came to dislike the Order's methods, particularly after hearing stories of the Second Exorcist program that was managed from her Branch. Combined with her own experiences as a test subject, she came to feel that exorcists were exploited cruelly and unfairly by the Order, and refused to cooperate with any more experimentation. She offered her caretakers an ultimatum - either they arranged for the removal of her afflicted leg, or she would remove it herself. Reluctantly, but trusting her determination, they agreed. After the procedure, it was confirmed there was no Innocence remaining inside her body.

She quickly realised that the Order wouldn't let her Innocence go so easily, however. As soon as she was able, Gail obtained the remains of her leg, and attempted to destroy it. Inspired by an old family legend of her mother's, in which a Viking ancestor survived after being shipwrecked by using the fragments of his broken bones as a blade until help could arrive, she decided to mutilate the remains beyond the possibility of experimentation by shaping them into a weapon. This also suited her sense of morbid irony. Unfortunately for her, however, immediately following completion of her sword she synchronised with the Innocence within it.

Gail refuses to disclose the exact process by which she carved or otherwise created her current weapon out of a desire to prevent its recreation and further hinder Order exploitation of exorcists. She has stated, though, that at the time she did not believe there were any traces of biological matter remaining on or within the bone. This has, despite her intentions, led to continued Order interest in her process, and more questions regarding its remaining links to her body, if any.

She was soon fitted with a prosthetic metal leg. Thanks to the Science Division, the leg is connected to her nerves and able to perform rudimentary movement, although it is not particularly agile or suited to running. Due to her heritage and language skills, Gail was transferred to the European Branch to continue training. She was initially meant to be apprenticed to General Klaud Nine, but the Order quickly realised that her mobility issues made her poorly suited to the General's more dangerous and mobile missions. Instead, she trained briefly within the Order itself, and was certified as an exorcist aged 18.

Gail's time as an exorcist has been spent largely within the Order rather than on missions, due to a combination of Science Division curiosity regarding her Innocence, maintenance and improvements on her leg, and her general mobility issues. Recently, she has been putting this time to good use, investigating the possible causes behind her Innocence abnormalities.

| Extra Information

- Gail is homosexual aromantic

- She has recently been working at improving her wood carving because she believes the Innocence helped her carve her sword, making it a "cheat" rather than an achievement in the skill

- Gail speaks English, Norwegian, Mandarin, and a little Cantonese. Despite spending 5 years in the Asian Branch, she has not received a Chinese name. This disappoints her

- She has kept the other bones from her left leg, and wonders whether it may be possible to build a secondary weapon from them

- Since the amputation of her leg, Gail no longer suffers from her blood conditions

- Gail does not like discussing her opinion on religion, but when asked will usually say she doesn't believe in organised religion

- Despite her interest in body modification, Gail does not have any permanent tattoos or piercings; the Order has officially "discouraged" her from getting them

- Gail is a little short sighted, but does not wear glasses or corrective lenses

+ Thank you, ChikitaWolf for making this template!!
+ Thanks to Clau and Becky, for laughing with (and at) me as I contemplated the medical mysteries of Gail's missing butt cheek. Extra kudos to Clau for "pin cushion" and [Min voice].
+ Thanks to my geneologist/historian Grandfather for helping me find a historically accurate reason for my character's parents to make their way to Perth, for humouring my probably ridiculous desire to have an OC from my home town, and for pointing out that 1888s South WA houses were made of timber, not brick.

I have to say I like this OC a lot. You managed to keep it historically consistent and even though your character has a very unique backstory with unusual elements, Gail doesn't have a martyr syndrom or anything like that, I find her character and behavior rather plausible. Another thing I like a lot is that the Innocence synchro rate isn't exaggerated, even after coming into contact with the Innocence a long time before. I'm checking DGM OCs rather often, but this is one of the best I've seen. Thank you for the interesting read and I hope to see more deviations featuring Gail :)
