The Treasure Map of Captain Vane

Description

“Captain Robert Vane (1685 – 1719) was one of many men who left the navy to seek their fortune through less savoury means. The man himself never reached great fame, unlike his hidden gold. His treasures most likely were seized from several Spanish merchantmen, most notably the Maria Carolina whose wreck was never found. Captain Vane buried a large part of the taken gold on a nearby island to protect it from the law as well as his fellow pirates but only a few weeks later he was shot and killed in a tavern in Caracas.
Before his death Captain Vane is said to have produced two almost identical maps, only one of which lead to his treasure while the other promised a grisly death. Soon after his own demise more copies started showing up, varying in quality from cheap imitations to flawless copies made by master cartographers. It is impossible to say how many specimens of Robert Vane's treasure map exist today. Only one thing is clear: his gold remains hidden to this day.”

A piece for a friend of mine.
