Character
Name: Rainkit | Rainpaw | Rainwhisper
[Rain] - For the blue-grey colour and rippling, water-like texture of her thick pelt, like a stream swollen with torrential rain.
[Paw] - For her rank as apprentice.
[Whisper] - (in the future) For both her quiet nature, and the habit she has of letting her long tail trail into the river and over stones, creating a gentle whispering sound.
Clan: RiverClan
Age: Nine Moons
Rank: Medicine Cat Apprentice
Gender: Female
Appearance details: A blue-grey she-cat greatly resembling the Nebelung breed, Rainpaw has only a few faint markings visible in her thick fur. She has dark stripes on her tail and only three dark grey mittens, which quickly become invisible when she gets wet, and a slightly paler muzzle and inner ear. Her pale green eyes are characteristic of Nebelungs. She has fairly long, slender legs and a longer body as well.

History

[Kithood : 0-6 Moons]

Rainkit was born to a Queen called Blueleaf on a cold, stormy day in a litter of only two kits. It was a difficult birth; they were late in the season, and the Clan had been suffering greatly as the lake dried up. Despite giving the lion’s share to the Elders and Queens, Blueleaf was exhausted and weak, and barely survived the labour. By the end of the long labour, she could barely move, her mate—a gentle, kind tom called Brightwhisker—bringing her moss soaked in rainwater that she could lap from. The two kits, despite their late birth, were smaller than usual, one blue-grey like her mother and the other with more noticeable black stripes like her father. The striped kit didn’t even move after the birth beyond a couple weak mewls after Brightwhisker licked the fluids from her coat. Blueleaf, looking at her two small kits, decided to name the stronger kit Rainkit for her fur and the conditions under which she’d been born, and the other kit Tigerkit—both for her stripes, and in the hopes that giving her the name of the mythical big cats would make the kit stronger.

The strain of the birth had taken its toll on Blueleaf, however, and it compounded the long-term effects of hunger and thirst. She was unable to provide enough milk for the kits, and Tigerkit was struggling even to survive. It was four days before she even lifted her head to search for her mother. As a result, Blueleaf lavished more attention on the weak kit. She didn’t ignore Rainkit, continuing to feed and wash the kit, but she wanted desperately for Tigerkit to gain the same strength. When the two kits opened their eyes, it was Tigerkit Blueleaf praised most loudly. Rainkit felt as if it was her fault that her mother didn’t pay as much attention to her, and, already quiet by nature, she retreated further into her shell and became quiet and introverted.

As the kits became old enough to stumble around the nursery, Rainkit and Tigerkit began to notice the difference between them. While Tigerkit was physically weaker, she was fierce and a little crude, ordering the other kits around and generally being impolite. Rainkit felt bad for the other kits in the nursery, who didn’t like Tigerkit’s attitude but faced Blueleaf’s wrath if they said anything about it. Rainkit was skinny and gangly, with long legs and not an ounce of extra weight, but due to her thick fur she appeared somewhat larger than she was. That, combined with her quiet demeanor and her sister’s behaviour, made the other kits wary of her; they assumed she was cold and standoffish, and Rainkit spent most of her time alone save for whenever Brightwhisker would come and visit, trying to make up for Blueleaf’s distance and favoritism.

[The Journey : 3-9 Moons]

The Clans decided to leave the lake when Rainkit and Tigerkit were barely three moons old. Blueleaf was terrified for Tigerkit, who was still weak, and spent all her time fretting over the little striped kit. Rainkit had, fortunately, managed to gain some more strength while they were at the lake and the journey was not as difficult for her as it was for Tigerkit, who had to be carried for most of the way. Walking mostly on her own, Rainkit watched as members of not only her own Clan fall sick and die, and others struggle through the difficult mountain terrain. She saw as two ThunderClan warriors fell from a cliff, and as others struggled daily just to get through. Rainkit felt something compassionate bloom within her, an extension of what she had begun to feel toward the other kits when her sister bullied them. It was as if she experienced their pain, and she wanted nothing more than to help them recover and be healthy. While they walked, Brightwhisker would tell his daughter stories about a time when the Clans had been strong and flourishing, when the lake was full and the rivers flowed thick with fish. Having been born in a time of sickness, Rainkit had never seen her clan healthy and flourishing. The pictures Brightwhisker painted helped her through the difficult journey, as well as giving her the idea that, perhaps, she could help her Clan grow strong by healing it, instead of fighting for it.

Though it was difficult for the Medicine Cats to make do with the limited resources they’d been able to bring from the lake and what little they could find in the mountains, Rainkit watched as they did their best to heal every sick or injured cat. She admired their resolve and their care for the other cats, especially her own Clan’s Medicine Cat. They were so capable and confident, and it was their work, not the strength of the warriors, that could do anything against the cruel, unforgiving mountains.

Tigerkit, weak as she was, had almost no chance of surviving the journey and it seemed like everybody but Blueleaf knew it. They looked at the Queen with pity as the little striped kit grew weaker and weaker with each passing sunrise. It wasn’t long before she stumbled and fell, and was unable to stand back up, her legs to weak to support her. Desperately, Blueleaf picked up the kit and carried her for a further two sunrises. But by then, Tigerkit was too exhausted even to drink her mother’s milk, and not long after she fell into an endless sleep. She still breathed, but every breath was shallow and sounded terrible. After inspecting the kit, Sunstep regretfully told Blueleaf that she wouldn’t wake up; her heart was beating poorly, and sounded irregular. It was a miracle she’d made it this far. Driven mad with grief, Blueleaf refused to leave the ailing kit. She carried Tigerkit to the caves, and when some of the other Clan cats decided to stay there, she chose to remain as well with her dying kit.

Her mother’s decision hurt Rainkit deeply, although she and her mother had not been close. It strengthened her resolve to become a Medicine Cat rather than a warrior even further. The harsh wilderness of the mountains had frightened her terribly, and the healing abilities of the Medicine Cats had brought out a more caring side of her instead. She had also become afraid of some of the large, fierce warriors who had made the journey through sheer willpower. When the Clans finally made it to the Fjords, relieved and exhausted from the journey, Rainkit forced herself to summon up the courage to speak out, despite her quiet nature. She pleaded with her leader to allow her to become a Medicine Cat apprentice instead of a regular apprentice; she would already have her ceremony late due to the journey, and she hoped that RiverClan’s leader had yet to make any decisions. She even went so far as to admit to the leader that she was too afraid to be a warrior. The timid kit then approached the Medicine Cat themself, asking him to teach her the ways of healing. A volunteer is worth ten pressed cats, or so they say, and both Rainkit’s compassionate nature and her desperation were enough to convince them that she would bake a better Medicine Cat than a warrior.

About
Personality:

+[Compassionate] – Rainpaw is a deeply caring cat, who views others both empathetically and sympathetically. She feels for others and tries to understand their feelings as well as their physical pain to get to the root of a problem

+[Open-minded] – In every situation, Rainpaw tries to see each perspective, and never settles on an opinion until she’s seen something from every angle.

+[Thoughtful] – Ever word that comes out of Rainpaw’s mouth is thoroughly considered, and she isn’t one to mince words. That’s not to say she’s blunt or direct; her words are still compassionate, but she reflects carefully first. She thinks of others before herself.

>(Introspective) – Rainpaw spends a lot of time reflecting on her actions and thoughts. She thinks often about how what she said could have been misinterpreted, or what she could have done better.

>(Introverted) – Due to her upbringing and her nature, Rainpaw isn’t a particularly social cat. She bonds closely with very few, and with others she’s polite and compassionate, but it doesn’t necessarily shine through in her actions.

>(Realistic) – Rainpaw believes in taking things at face value, or at least from a realistic perspective. If she had to choose between optimist and pessimist, she’d be closer to a pessimist.

-{Cowardly} – A self-admitted coward, Rainpaw is afraid of violence and death, and has avoided any kind of battle training as much as she can.

-{Awkward} – Rainpaw’s other traits make her quite socially awkward in casual conversation. While she knows how to compassionately speak to cats who need medical help, she’s pretty useless when it comes to making friends or chatting.

-{Aloof} – Her cowardice, introversion and thoughtfulness make her quite distant and separate. Sometimes she longs to be part of the crowd, but realistically she’d much rather stay on her own.

Likes: The feel of the river through her fur, a bed of warm river stones, a full belly, the sound of her father's voice.
Dislikes: Confrontation, judgement, the prickly feeling of fear, thunder and lightning.

Roleplay
(From an RP with TheBlueTrickster)

The day was crisp and cool, and the air was light on Goldblaze’s tongue, flooding his scent glands with the refreshing scent of autumn. The sky was fading, a vivid tangle of blues, pinks and deep violets sweeping across the sky as dusk merged into night. Underpaw, the late fall leaves crackled and hissed like wildfire, the bright hues muted in the evening light. Goldblaze revelled in the refreshing season, each step seeming to rejuvenate him. The past few days had brought a monotony of hunting and collecting supplies to repair one of the dens, which had been superficially damaged in an early autumn storm, and he felt as if he hadn’t had a chance to simply enjoy the season since it had begun. Keeping his ears perked and alert, the warrior almost had to struggle not to simply run ahead and kick up leaves, languidly swiping a paw at one that fell from a nearby tree. He looked over at his companion, who had thus far been silent, his dark pelt melting into the shadows of sunset. They had talked little during the patrol, too focused on their duties, but now that they were returning to camp it felt like the perfect chance to talk to his friend. Ever since what had happened to Ivypaw… Goldblaze had felt as if Darkshade had retreated into himself, and become distant. It was hard to bear, when once they’d been so close.

Goldblaze shouldered aside a tangled bough of some brambles in their path, holding it out of the way for Darkshade to walk ahead. He stared at his best friend, at the slight slump of his shoulders that hadn’t been there long ago, when they were still apprentices and had nothing but pride and eagerness for their roles in the Clan. Despite successfully mentoring another apprentice, Goldblaze always sensed something had changed irreversibly in Darkshade, and it saddened him more than he’d ever admitted out loud. Maplecreek had been good for him, Goldblaze knew, but whether it was enough, he didn’t know. It wasn’t as if they talked as much as they used to.

Swallowing the bitterness and the hints of resentment that had begun to choke him, Goldblaze picked up his pace. It was no good to dwell on something that he couldn’t change. He loped after Darkshade, paws skimming over the crunching leaves. “Do you smell that?” He asked, twitching his whiskers playfully. “Rain’s coming, and I know how much you love that.” Goldblaze bumped his shoulder against his friend’s and glanced up at the sky, looking at the clouds scudding across the horizon. “Looks like it’ll hit tonight, too.”
