Baxter furrowed his brows, rubbing the back of his neck in thought. "This... This is weird, they are showing all the symptoms of being poisoned, but the antidote isn't working." He stood up, "I'm going to go through the ranch and see if there are any more pokemon showing these symptoms, you should stay here with them."
Tamra nodded, understanding what he meant. She hoped that none of her pokemon had gotten sick...

Tamra lifted the deerling, and Baxter took the two sentrets in his arms, and the two walked the pokemon back to Tamra's house. There, she filled one of her moving boxes with pillows and blankets, and they carefully placed the sick pokemon inside. She looked at Baxter, "Think you can do a run-through of the ranch and make sure nobody else is sick, and I'll stay with them?"

Baxter nodded, grabbed his bag, and headed out the door, Glitch and Amarok trailing behind him.

Manticore, Agamemnon, and Nymph all stayed with Tamra. Agamemnon kept his fur warm and layed close to the young pokemon in the box, trying to help. Tamra patted his head, she was becoming very proud of how her pokemon were being raised. They all seemed to be so sweet and kind, and incredibly helpful, but Agamemnon was her favorite. She wouldn't say that out loud, of course, but he really had some potential. When it got down to it, battling was a definite strong suit of his, as he had control over his fire moves, and knew how to use them to any advantage he needed. He was also very smart, and seemed to understand Tamra better than any of her other pokemon could when dealing move demands.

Manticore sat, watching his trainer coo the sick pokemon to sleep, while his brother lay at her elbow, and a jealousy began to form in his little lion chest. He was the first born on the ranch, the first born of Goldy and Blitz, the first four-trait born, and his brother was a lousy three-trait. He didn't deserve the attention Tamra gave him. He was so... small. Small, soft, and fluffy. Sure he had those little horns on his head, but Manticore had the large, deadly claws of an Absol, and a stinging scorpion tail! Oh, one day he would teach his brother a lesson.

Baxter hadn't realized that Glitch and Amarok had followed him out onto the ranch until he turned a corner and caught a glimpse of them running behind him. He held out his hand, "Aren't you two supposed to be back at the house, helping Tamra with the wild pokemon?" He scolded.

But they refused to move, and after a few moments, Baxter gave up. He was outnumbered, and way outwilled. He agreed to take them with him to search the ranch.

After an hour, the sun was beginning to set, and they still had half the ranch to check. Luckily they hadn't found any more seemingly-poisoned pokemon in the areas they had already gone to, but they had to check the rest of the ranch. Baxter sent Glitch to the lake, and Amarok to the forest, and he scanned over the flat part of the field. After they re-grouped, and found that there were no more sick pokemon, Baxter and the two pokemon headed back to Tamra's house, where Manticore and Agamemnon were having quite a scuffle.

"Baxter! Help! I can't get them apart, and they're going to burn my house down!" Tamra yelled, and Baxter quickly sent Amarok to get between them. She pushed her bulk between the two now-flaming pokemon, and turned angry eyes on Manticore.

"What happened?" Baxter asked, looking at Tamra.

"I was just petting Agamemnon, and trying to get the wild pokemon to sleep, when all of a sudden Manticore jumped on him! I don't know why or what he did, but claws and fire and now..." Tamra tried to relay what had happened, but her chest was moving too quickly and she started to hyperventilate. Baxter took her by the shoulders and told her to go to bed, that he would handle this.

Tamra nodded, looking to Agamemnon, who was cowered in a corner of the livingroom, while Manticore pushed against his sister to get at his smaller brother. She called Agamemnon to her, and he followed her to her room.

Now it was Baxter's time to turn angry eyes on the brown and orange lion cub, "Manticore. You cannot cause a commotion like that around sick pokemon, and your trainer. You will not battle your siblings if you aren't given direction to, and you will not use fire type moves indoors. Ever. Understand?" he scolded in a low, angry voice.

Manticore lowered his head in shame, and nodded.

"Now you take Nymph back to the forest, and keep an eye on everything. Amarok, you stay here with me."

The pokemon obligued and did as their trainer's hired handiman said.

When Manticore and Nymph were gone, Baxter sat down on the couch next to the box of sick pokemon, and patted beside him for the huge Amarok to join him. She did so, and laid her large head and two of her front paws on his lap protectively.

"Today was too long of a day for this, girl."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, Baxter awoke to a pain in his neck, and Tamra sitting on the livingroom chair, eyes glued to the TV. He looked to see a news reporter from HQ speaking rather hurriedly.

"We have been following up with the contamination of the regions largest water plant and reservoir that connects to a majority of the freshwater waterways in the region. We do not know what has caused this water-borne illness and will be sending in a hazard team immediately to take care of the situation. HQ asks all trainers to refrain from drinking from the tap system, freshwater streams, and other bodies of fresh water. Bottles of water will be accessible to the community while the hazard team proceeds to enter the water plant."

Tamra turned worried eyes on Baxter, and in unison they said "The Lake"

The two got up and ran to the lake, where they heard cries of agony. Nymph squeaked, and ran around the lake, and Tamra and Baxter followed her. "What is it?"

It turned out the cries of agony came from Manticore, who now lay in a scorched spot of grass.

Baxter put the story together in his head "I told Manticore to take Nymph back to the forest and keep an eye on things, but he must have been tired from the fight he'd had with Agamemnon and needed a drink... So they stopped here, and now..." He looked frantically around, then looked at Nymph, "Did you let any other pokemon drink from the lake?" He asked.

She shook her head.

"Good girl. Amarok, get Manticore on your back, we have to take him home. Glitch, Nymph, you stay here and make sure noone drinks from the lake or the stream that leads to it. Got it?" The two sat in obedience, and Amarok nudged the fiery lion onto her back.

"This isn't good, Baxter..." Tamra said, wringing her hands. Agamemnon walked beside her, trying to keep up with his siblings, worry overly evident on his furred face.

He nodded, "We just have to get Manticore home, then I'll figure out what's going on here. I'll follow the water up-stream and we'll figure this out."

Tamra agreed, but after some time shook her head, "No, you should stay here. I'll go."

Baxter looked at her in surprise, "What?"

"I said you stay here. You know medicines much better than I do, and if anything else goes wrong I need you here to take care of it. I'll take Agamemnon upstream. Got it?" She said, trying in vain to put up a brave facade.

Baxter took a moment to think about it, but understood where she was coming from. This was her ranch, her pokemon were getting sick, those lives that were put in danger were hers to take care of. Hers to protect.

"You up for a little adventure, buddy?" Tamra looked to her small companion. He met her eyes and smiled.

She hoped this would end well.
