Genotype:  ee/Aa/nSty/nSpl  // Ee/Aa/nSty
Breed Resemblance: Spanish Barb x Andalusian

General Description:
Staying true to the mixture of her breed, Khala has a shorter, stocky appearance with a rather strongly shaped body and short, muscular legs.  Her gaits seem to carry more of her Andalusian heritage, as they are smooth and flowing as silky as water flowing down a stream.  This mare tries little to make herself appear attractive, as she has never seen the point in dressing or grooming oneself to perfection when there are more important things to be taken care of.  One will hardly ever see her without her mane and tail pulled into her messy braids, but when her hair is loose, it is stringy and often tangled into tight knots.

Voice Description:
With a voice that neither resonates high or low, Khala has an even tone that hardly seems capable to carry emotion.  However, she has the uncanny ability to change the pitch of her voice and it is hardly ever monotonous or dull.  At times, she will speak low and sultry and others high and flighty.  In the end, it is nearly impossible to distinguish her emotions or thoughts from her voice.

Religious Beliefs:
Khala is whole-heartedly devoted to her goddess Kaia, and would never dream of deviating from the power of the earth.  The earth is the source of all things, and without it, they would have nothing.  Her goddess receives

[ Passionate ]
Khala is governed by the long built passion for her herd and their survival.  From a young age, she was drilled with War Forged patriotism and loyalty.  Because of this, it seems ever decision she makes is based around her desire to do good for them.  This often shows through in her day to day actions, and she very much radiates herd pride.  Khala's passion also comes for her general care and compassion for the members of her herd.  This mare is easily excited when it comes to matters of the herd, and she can be seen laughing and chatting with herd-mates often.  Her love for her herdmates show through in nearly everything she does. However, despite her pride in who she is and where she comes from, Khala also believes that some of their views are wrong, and this is one topic she is especially passionate about.  Khala believes that mares have just as much right as stallions, and she'd be more that willing to throw herself into the fray to prove it.

[ Adroit ]
Khala is a quick-witted mare, and is very practical in social situations as well as on the battle field.  She enjoys coming up with clever solutions to any problems she has been faced.  As most of her life was spent striving to become something greater than society told her she could be, this trait was almost a necessity to develop, and one she would inevitably hone.  Sharp tongued and matter-of-fact, she's also not afraid to put her wit to use.  Nothing gives her more pleasure than stumping the stallions when they try to prove her wrong.

[ Efficacious ]
As has been mentioned shortly, Khala is determined and persistent to the point of endangerment, but she always seems to have a way of producing her desired results.  This mare has an insane work ethic, as her role has very well determined how she has acted and reacted for years.  There is always a project to be done, always something she needs to have her focus on, and often these are specifically related to her herd and rank as a Valkyrie. Despite her best efforts, however, Khala is not a politician in any shape or form of the word.  She may know what she wants, but that often interferes with the good that could be done for others.

[ Autonomous ]
Khala is entirely governed by her own rules.  Now, while this may sound like a bad trait for one of her stance, it actually works in her benefit.  As she was raised and trained from a young age with the sacraments of her herd, these rules are all she ever uses to judge others.  Utterly rooted within their herd's heritage, history and beliefs, it is hard to find anything about this mare that doesn't bleed War Forged.  Specifically though, she seeks for her independence from the oppression she's always been faced with.  Her father encouraged her from a young age to pursue her dreams, and considering where he came from, this feisty little mare has had her eyes set high since she was young.  Perhaps the only view that she has taken on as her own, and a drastic deviation from the herd's beliefs, is her desire to have true equality among the members of their society.

[ Maternal ]
This is one trait Khala never would have imagined she had, but from the moment she learned that she was pregnant all those years ago, her maternal instincts kicked in with a vengeance.  Calling Khala a "mother bear" is an understatement to say the least.  She completely embodies the roll of protective mamma, and if anything were to ever hurt her child, fear the wrath of mother bear.  Shyla is the light of her life, and Khala loves her more than she has ever loved another being.

[ Hubristic ]
Khala's pride seems to be what one might first notice upon meeting her, and probably the trait that tends to also ward others away.  She is prideful to the point of arrogance, and her overconfidence in her abilities often comes through in her sometimes faulty plans.  In her mind, she can see all of the angles, knows all the outcomes, and is convinced that it is utterly inconceivable that she hasn't thought of every angle.  If there is one positive aspect to her pride, it is that it is rooted in her heritage as a War Forged.

[ Distant ]
Khala is often emotionally withdrawn from those around her, preferring to keep her true feelings and sorrows to herself.  She rarely, if ever, will open up and be honest about what is happening inside her thoughts.  This is perhaps drawn from the death of her parents, and the blame she bears for how her mother died.  Or, perhaps when she left a stallion that could have made her happy, she decided that being too close to anyone was dangerous and hurtful.  The only exception to this is her daughter, who can probably read her mother like a book.

[ Anxious ]
Khala seems to constantly be in a state of worry.  Though it does not often show through, there are times when it is completely evident.  She has a tendency to focus on the mistakes she's made, and often lets them overwhelm her.  With someone as analytical as Khala, it's only logical that she would turn this trait backwards upon herself.  Highly introspective, this mare is her own worst critic, and no one can say worse than what is already going through her mind.  This is perhaps why she puts such a heavy weight on being successful, because failure cannot be an option.

History:

[ Before Birth ]
|| traditions be what they may ||

True to the traditions of the War Forged herd, Khala's parents were betrothed from a very young age.  Their families were close, having owned small farms a short distance from each other, and each only had one child.  When Ulric and Leah were born, it was the perfect solution to economic troubles for both houses.  Of course, the children had disagreements growing up, and during their teenage years both equally disposed the forced marriage, but in the end, that's where they found their common ground, and the two discovered that they could tolerate each other's presence.  In fact, it was more than tolerable, and both would wind up eagerly anticipating their wedding day.

It was a humble, warm ceremony, both only freshly turning 18.  Their first years were spent together, in solitude, learning the ways of the farm and taking care of aging parents.  However, soon enough, Ulric felt pulled to give more of his service to his herd, and enlisted in the Shields to do this in whatever form he could.  Leah was left at home with both sets of parents and they took care of the farm while he was gone.  For the next two decades Ulric moved between home and his duties, eventually establishing a place for himself in the Stone Circle.  All the while his wife tended the farms, and their parents eventually all passed, their bodies buried beneath the fields to nourish the next generations.

Eventually, Ulric retired from his position at the ripe age of 41, desiring to return to the simple life, and, at the request of his wife, start a family.

[ Birth & Foalhood ]
|| may your actions speak your battle cry ||

Khala was born into a hard-working, but comfortable life, and it was one that suited her well from the start.  Born in the middle of winter, she was immediately faced with the harsh lives War Forged were destined to live, but the flame-colored filly embraced it whole-heartedly, an could be seen playing in the snow more frequently than one might expect from such a small child.

The energetic filly took life on the farm into stride, charging into her chores with as much determination as any colt her age.  It quickly became apparent to Leah that her daughter would not be content in the roll society would plan out for her, and would soon start to attempt to tame the child, and encouraged her to play with other fillies.  While Khala certainly enjoyed the play, she always wanted to be the brave Shield leading the charge, or the Raider leading valiant missions against sea pirates from the south.  Leah made her concern apparent, but Ulric reveled in it.  The stallion was traditional, but, he wasn't so narrow-minded that he could not see that there was potential in his daughter.  She, too, would ultimately crave a life better than the one she would possess as a farmer.

However, Khala was too young to realize these things herself, and was actually quite content to be as she was.  She loved the vastness of the farm, the open spaces that she could run and frolic in.  She had a happy, warm childhood, safe and protected from much of the outside world.  To this day, she will look back and say that she could not complain about how she was raised.  Indeed, she is one of the few blessed with such normalcy, and she thanks Kaia every day for those years.  These were the ones that taught her to be loving and kind, to serve Kaia and work her earth, to reap the rewards from what you've sewn: all life lessons that she would carry on for years to come.

[ Teenage Years ]
|| here they talked of revolution ||

It was only once Khala hit her teenage years that her hardships began, and her true nature began to develop.  For Khala is a stubborn and selfish creature, and she and her soft spoken mother would often clash, especially on the topic of her behavior.  Leah was concerned that Khala would never find a place to fit in in society, as she wouldn't accept simply staying on the farm.  Ulric always held the middle ground, as he could only try to encourage his daughter as well as settle his beloved wife on the topic.  Diplomacy didn't often work with the two of them, and for many years of her teenage life, Khala rather despised her mother.  She'd show her eventually.  She knew what she was doing. . . didn't she?

Unfortunately, it would be a sad circumstance that would bring the two warring mares together.  Around Khala's 16th birthday, her father fell ill.  Leah said it was a sickness that he had carried around for many years, and he wasn't one to whine or mention his pain, so he'd kept it hidden from Khala.  Needless to say, it was why he'd come home, and the Medics said they were surprised to see that he had lived this long.  As the year went on, the dark stallion grew sicker until the day he was bedridden and miserable.

Khala spend every minute at his side, doting upon her beloved father between the daily chores of herding and tending the crops.  At night, she would read to him, spending hours weaving stories or reading reports from Skeldr Town.  Each night he would fall asleep with a smile on his muzzle.  Days passed like this, until there was one morning that he did not wake up.  Both Khala and Leah had slept by his side that night, and he passed on with a heart full of love.

Ulric was buried in the fields beside his parents, as he had wished.  Wildflowers were planted around the graves, and they were left to be in peace, finally at harmony with Kaia.  It was through this experience that Khala finally bonded with her mother, and the two mares took charge of their humble farm.  It was no easy task in that day and age, as two mares weren't often taken seriously, especially when it came to selling their products, but Khala drove a hard bargain, and Leah came to appreciate her daughter's more 'un-ladylike' characteristics.

The two lived happily together well past Khala's 19th year, and again, Khala could not complain about these years.  While her heart drove her away from home in the pursuit of her dreams, she chose to stay, ever loyal to her family and the farm they had worked so hard to build.  A piece of her always wanted out, but practicality would ultimately be the winner of her conflict.

[ Adulthood ]
|| the ties that bind ||

Times remained quiet on the family farm, and life continued as it had been until Khala neared her 20th year.  It was on a dark night that Khala was out in the barns tending to a sheep in labor.  She hardly noticed the smoke as it trickled into the barn, or the flames that silently licked the northern wall.  A band of theives had come to pillage their humble home, and they'd taken their antics too far.  One stray fire manipulator caught the house and barn alight, and it wasn't long before both were up in flames.

Khala's ears twitched when the crackles became louder, golden eyes stretching wide to take in the sight.  Hungrily the flames consumed the wall, and it spread fast, faster than she could move, and she was trapped.  With a terrorized cry, she screamed for her mother, her fear so raw that she could hardly move.  The sheep had scattered, and some made it out, but many would ultimately perish in the flames.  It was not long after that Khala herd Leah's calls in return.  And the small chestnut mare was at her daughter's side, coaxing her out, both of them running through the flames.

And then the barn screamed, the sound of wood bending beneath stress creating the horrifying sound.  Something broke, and the structure was going down.  Just before they cleared the exit, Leah was struck with a supporting beam, and she was down, dead the instant the beam contacted her back.  But Khala did not know, and when she stood, alone, outside the burning building, all she knew was that her mother was going to die, and she was powerless to help her.  It was her fault, in the end, that all of this had happened.  If she had just moved, if she had just payed more attention, her mother wouldn't have had to save her, and she would still be alive.

With the guilt weighing heavily on her shoulders, Khala knew it was time for her to leave this life.  She sold the farmland, with the promise that the graves of her family would still be left alone and reserved forever in honor, reserved for her return, and Khala left that life behind.
