Welcome to Flash Fiction Month, day 18.

The days begin to move strangely, do they not? Several of our heads cannot believe that it is already the 18th. Others cannot believe that it is only the 18th. The rest scoff at the first two sets of heads and their subjective perception of time, and instead demand more flashes. More challenge flashes, specifically, so scroll down to see what awaits!

Instructions

Flash Fiction Month is about writing – and posting – a story of between 55 and 1000 words in length every day for the month of July. We’ll make it easy by posting prompts every day. We’ll make it fun by cheering each other on. We’ll make it ridiculously hard by posting challenges for you to attempt every couple of days.

Every day, there will be a new deviation where you can post a link to your piece of flash fiction for the day.

Paste a link to your flash fiction piece for July 18 in the comments below.

If you write a piece every day and complete every challenge, you might be eligible to win something, or... something. So we hear, anyway. We're fairly sure there will be prizes.

Everyone loves comments and encouragement, so make an effort to encourage your fellow Flash Fiction Month participants. Let's help each other to have the best possible experience. A quick comment lets a writer know somebody's reading, and we all love that.

CHALLENGE: The Great Fire

The Great Fire of Rome began on this night in 64 CE, and that is all anyone is certain about, apart from the aftermath.

ELEMENT THE FIRST: Disaster has struck!

Your story is to begin either during or in the wake of a disaster. This does not necessarily have to be a fire, but it is highly encouraged.

ELEMENT THE SECOND: Who put that there?

We all know that Nero did not in fact fiddle as Rome burned, because fiddles weren't invented until almost a thousand years later. But it is a part of the popular story, and so the second part of your challenge is to include an anachronism, that is something that is out of place for the time period of your setting. Because what are we doing but writing the popular stories?

Remember, if you've done the challenge, let us know by saying "Challenge" in your submission comment.

Reminders

For those reading this who still haven't signed up for thirty-one days of fun, flashing (not suitable for readers with photo-sensitive epilepsy) and fiction, learn about Flash Fiction Month here, and sign up here. It's never too late to join in the action.

If all you're doing during July is writing thirty-one stories, you're missing out on two thirds of the fun. Check out the official Chat Room, where you can find encouragement, new prompts, and insanity in abundance.

Low on inspiration? Our wonderful prompt offerings both past and present can be found at our nifty new Official 2016 Prompt Generator or here at our FFM Official 2009-2015 Prompt Generator And don't forget to pay a visit to the Prompt Bank. The flash fiction muses must be fed daily, and everyone must pay the tithe.
