Hello and Welcome to another issue of 'On the Other Side' a collaboration between Bats and I.

Batsceba and I came up with the idea to create a gallery folder within Progressive-Street that showcases some of our personal favorites that are street photos a little off-kilter from the usual. As you can see in our header image we give a brief wording of what we look for in these images we choose to add. Of the images we choose, we wanted to share our thoughts of why and how they stand out, why they are a little unique to the more traditional street captures. Why we like them a lot!

Bats and I will be taking turns issuing journals for progressive street choosing a number of deviations from the "On the other side" Gallery to write about.  Now keep in mind I am no great writer and my writings tend to be a bit random and off the top of my head. I simply type off the top of my head.  :typer: revamp

On dA there is a lot of wonderful photo features, but rarely is there words to go along with why they were chosen. It's a bit of work to write about what you see in a photo. I feel it's such a visual and mental experience that words are just put aside sometimes.  They aren't necessarily needed for ones' own understanding and enjoyment of a photograph. So bringing words to a picture, even if it is just a few sentences or a short paragraph..really gives the viewers and the photographer something on the other side.

look for by nicoella

'look for' by nicoella really caught my eye ;) This is an amazing mind blowing composition that has sections that communicate together in a perfect contrast of black and white tones. We don't need a real human in this photo to capture the essence of the human form, that I why I still see this as street photography...just a bit on the other side of the genre. I see a young women full of life and due to her dimples I'd indicate at least a smirk of an excited expression; Maybe even a smile. Her eyes' look brings us through the composition and are our starting point. I feel the left side, the darker mysterious un-shapen side, has something hidden within it's shadows. Now I love the textures in the center section of this composition, to me this brings feelings of a tough journey or walking on thin, cracked ice. This is the way we travel through the composition: her and her glance, through a rather dangerous or dream crushing land, to our final mystery. Which may not be the answer we really are looking for. All in all this image brings me a feeling of a life gone bad, or to some uncertain ends. A girl's journey onto...the other side.

Riderless! Avignon. France by jennystokes

Riderless! Avignon. France by jennystokes is an delightful capture that leads us into another side of seeing things. Again another prime example of how we can convey a sense of humanity in captures that at not directly pointed at a being. We see a row of parked bicycles that must be for rent or part of sharing system, alone beside their shadows. However what is most amazing is that the shadows seem to be lying to us and our brain goes crazy with imagination and curiosity. If there really were people on these bikes their shadows seem warped and alien still. The farther back you look into the image you notice the figures are all slightly in different postures which makes them seem like individuals on a bike, in forms that really speaks for a different states of humanity. I love that Jenny got a nicely composed image that isn't too wide as to spoil the secret of the source of these almost primate looking shadows. Combined with some lovely color splash from the bikes themselves it creates quite a contrast and overall a deep mystery, and our first clue can only be.. on the other side.

cloth by CHAOKUNWANG

Cloth by CHAOKUNWANG really seems to me that it didn't get as much attention as it deserves. This is such an amazing perspective and interesting composition. Now what I really like about this composition is the over powering textured perspective that takes up 3/4th of the area. This capture has a human in it clearly however I find this image to have emerged from the other side solely from the unusual perspective that dominates it in textures and gives a feeling of 3D. As if being pulled into the image by the large sheet and led through to the man. Also the image is perfectly (you could say perfectly unperfect ;) ) tilted from the mans vertical stance at a perpendicular degree to the bottom left corner of the image. I feel this adds another element to the perspective experience here. I love the black and white tones as well. The overall effect of this image is inviting into a reality, trap in time...the essence of street photography that brings us ..on the other side.

Inside the Kings Library by deepgrounduk

Inside the Kings Library by deepgrounduk reminds me a lot of the feeling I got from
"Sfinx" by ezkilzon back in issue 3 of the series. What I see here is a very unusual form of street photography that combines history with the 21st century. We are brought to the past ofcourse with the statue of an old leader or important figure and in a reflection we see very old looking books reminding us of all the history that really happens between then and now. Then we have laptop computers and very modern feeling environment outside of the reflection and right in front of the figures eyesight. I feel as if the statue is looking amongst the 'present' time but he feels like it cannot look back at him. To me it's a juxtaposition in a way and beautifully composed within a world of color, time, and reflection. Time is always relative, but we are on the other side.

5)

New religion by cosmin-m

New Religion by cosmin-m is an amazing composition filled with spectacular lighting in an epic church scene setting. I feel we are being brought the other side of normal here because I can't say I've seen a lot of street photography from inside a church so this is quite interesting in that regard alone. Now I just love the composition here! (Have I said that before?)  In our comp here we have two gentlemen on their mobiles in a  nice line from the bottom right corner, then we have a beautiful architecture of a staircase etc in the upper left, completed by bright beams of light shining through the windows in the the upper right. Someone taught me about triangle compositions here on dA a while ago and that's what I'm seeing. The modern breakdown of religion and the bask of ignorance is the feeling I get here. Almost as if the moral of society is to just sit and wait...live out your meaningless life because who cares anymore then that, however contrasted to the beautiful surroundings they are in.
