..EDEN..

The autumn air was crisp and cool, the sky bright and cloudless blue. Contentedly, Eden rolled over onto her back and gazed at the sky, grinning to herself.

She was on her own, in a lovely stretch of land between Pinefell and Wispwood, the flat, grassy, open place south of the river, but just before the land curved and swelled as rolling hills. She had technically been instructed to check the numbers on an elk herd that had been spotted in the region - conflicting reports had been given, one wolf claiming the herd consisted of easily more than forty members, and another the very same day reporting only a dozen individuals, mostly females. Two other wolves had been sent to verify the number before a hunting party would be sent out the next morning.

Eden was one of those wolves. But not only had she not seen any trace of the elk herd (save some heaps of dung and trampled grass with stale scent around it), she had lost sight of her partner. Maybe he had found the elk herd.

Or not, Eden mused, spotting a black shadow moving towards her across the grassland. She sat up, scratched at her shoulder with a hind leg, and called out, "Any sign of this herd?"

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus approached Eden, watching as she rolled back onto her belly and heaved herself up to greet him. He let out a sigh. Usually he was the one rolling around in the grass while his partner worked, not the other way around. “None my way,” he said, sitting down and glancing at the green-brown grass that grew thickly around them, slowly dying as the seasons changed, “I assume you didn’t find any hiding in the grass?” he asked, his silver eyes flicking up to stare at her, a playful grin on his face.

..EDEN..

"Well," she said, putting on a facade of deep pondering, tilting her head to the side and casting her gaze sideways. "Unless the elk have suddenly become wriggly worms, I don't think so." She smirked amusedly, her tail swishing gently in the grass. "In all honesty, though, I didn't see any anywhere around here. Perhaps they've moved into the cover of the trees - or else they're long gone. I would have thought a herd as big as was suggested would be easy to find."

She stretched, and nodded towards the treeline in the distance. "Do you want to check under the trees? There's no rush, though." She glanced at the bright blue sky and added, "There's no reason to rush on a day as beautiful as this. The elk will probably feel the same way - wherever they've wound up."

Eden tilted her head at Lazarus as she asked the question. They didn't know each other beyond an acquaintanceship, but she felt comfortable working with him. He was pretty relaxed, although the two of them paired together didn't seem the greatest idea, as neither was particularly driven to effective, quick work.

..LAZARUS..

Lazaruz rolled his eyes good-naturedly at her answer, then perked his ears as she went on more seriously. She was right, big elk herds could usually be seen, or at least smelled. “Yeah, you would think!” Lazarus agreed, and then nodded, “Sure, the trees sound like a good place to check now.”

Lazarus didn’t know Eden well yet, but he liked her. She was relaxed, she didn’t push him to work hard like other partners. And honestly, he hoped that they wouldn’t find the elk. If they found them then they would have to rush home, and even worse his parents might want him to help bring one down. Lazarus was as fast as the average courser, and was a pretty decent hunter as he got the instincts and physical abilities from his mother’s genes out of luck. But that meant he was often stuck onto hunting parties, much to his dismay.

He began to trot toward the trees, his tail swaying contently behind him.

..EDEN..

They trotted to the line of the trees, at an easy trot. The trees rustled in the light breeze, and sunlight fell, dappled, onto the leaf-strewn floor. Eden's paws crunched delightfully on the fallen leaves as they entered the forest, and she felt a rush of excitement.

She leaned down and snatched up a mouthful of the golden leaves, and tossed her bundle at Lazarus. Brilliant! she thought as the bundle landed squarely between his shoulders. She quickly glanced away, upwards, putting on a facade of nonchalance. She would have whistled if she could, in a very cheesy manner. Regardless, she was unable to hide a slight grin as Lazarus turned to look at her.

..LAZARUS..

They were trotting along, nice and casual, when suddenly a shower of leaves fluttered over Lazarus’ back, landing all over him! He blinked in confusion, looking over just in time to see Eden look away quickly. He narrowed his eyes, though said nothing as he smirked. So that’s how it’s gonna be, hm?

His approach was much less subtle as the pair passed under a low branch to a young tree. Lazarus darted around Eden, leaping into the air and clutching the tree branch in his jaws, causing it to jerk violently under his sudden weight. A light shower of those same golden leaves swirled down on him and Eden both.

..EDEN..

Eden laughed and shook the leaves from her pelt, feeling in her heart lighter than a bird. She tossed some more at Lazarus and then rushed off through the woods, her tail held high. She could hear Lazarus running after her, and she skidded to a halt. The darker wolf flew past her, and she lunged forward, tackling him into the leaves.

They were laughing and Eden heard a small crackling sound. At first, she thought, maybe it was the elk herd, and she turned around.

And she saw what it was.

She froze, the laughter dying on her lips, and pressed one paw to Lazarus's throat, effectively (though somewhat rudely) cutting his laughter short. "Laz," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Look."

For standing in front of them, less than the distance spanning the banks of a river, rummaging through some blackberry bushes, was a sooty-furred black bear. And it had been interrupted in its foraging by two foolish young wolves.

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus laughed as he was tackled to the ground and the two tumbled through the leaf-strewn ground. He ended up beneath the brown she-wolf, pawing at her chest as she pinned him down. He didn’t stop laughing under her paw shoved onto his throat and his voice was cut off short, “Eden… can’t breathe…” he rasped, though he still couldn’t stop his big, amused grin as he continued to bat at her, unaware of what could have alarmed her.

Until she told him to look. His silver eyes flicked up, and saw exactly that Eden was talking about. The bear did not look happy with them, turning from the blackberries toward the two youngsters with an angry grunt. Right… “Eden… care to let me up now?” he wheezed with a teasing glare up at her. They would probably want to get running…. Now.

..EDEN..

Eden's round golden eyes were fixated on the bear as it grunted, looking curiously at them, and quickly removed her paw from Lazarus's furry throat. "Good idea," she whispered back, cautiously pulling herself from Lazarus's prostrate form and standing slowly.

The bear snorted, black nose glistening wetly, twitching and twisting as it smelled the pair of young wolves. Lazarus scrabbled to his feet and the pair gazed silently at the bear for a heartbeat.

Then, the bear pushed itself back on its hind paws and stood up, claws glinting. Eden's heart dropped, and she yelped, "Run, Laz!" and whipped around, fleeing back towards the open stretch of grassland they had left behind.

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus has slowly rolled to his paws, his silver eyes fixed on the bear warily as the two parties observed each other, seeing what the other would do next. The bear made the first move, rising up onto hind legs with a menacing look on its face.

Lazarus didn’t need to be told to twice! He turned, following after Eden as the bear gave an angry noise and shot forward to pursue them. Lazarus looked over his shoulder, not running too fast, didn’t want to leave the bear in the dust, after all! He was confident they were safe at this point, so what was the fun in just racing off to nowhere just to be bored again? He moved his legs a bit faster just to catch up to Eden as they sprinted through the forest, “Gotta run faster than that if you want to outrun the bear!” he called playfully to her, despite the fact she was running plenty fast. His eyes were alight with the excitement as he veered into a lazy zig-zag.

..EDEN..

Eden's paws pounded against the forest floor as she ran, and she noticed as she began to overtake Lazarus that he intentionally wasn't running at top speeds! She glanced at him in disbelief, and tossed her gaze over her shoulder. The bear had stopped pursuing them, and now stood on its hind legs, glaring after them with beady eyes before turning away and dropping back to the ground.

"We're safe," she breathed. She didn't dare to stop running yet, though, instead slowing to the same pace as Lazarus and matching his movements, leaping over roots and dodging nimbly around trees until she couldn't anymore.

She skidded to a halt, her tongue lolling. "Alright, Lazarus. I'm done." She panted, her hindquarters dropping to the ground. And then, she began to laugh. "Oh, your face when you saw the bear! I can only imagine mine!" She dissolved into giggles, tail swishing gently through the leaves.

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus glanced over his shoulder, a bit disappointed that the bear stopped chasing them. They must have been moving too fast. Lazarus had never really been afraid of bears. Not ever since he could outrun them, and even before that he had been too dumb. Though that didn’t mean he was interested in being killed by one!

Lazarus slowed to a trot and then a stop as Eden did, panting with his silver eyes glowing as he looked at his companion. “Heh! I’ll bet! Not often a bear pops out of nowhere as I’m being held down by the throat! Your eyes were the size of the moon!” he answered, laughing himself and swiping at her playfully with his paws.

..EDEN..

Eden grinned at him, picturing her own face with eyes like golden moons. The result was a strange, bug-eyed image, which she laughed at to herself. "I'm sure that bear wasn't at all interested in hurting us, either. She was more - what are these foolish creatures making all this noise?!"

She pushed herself onto her hind legs to imitate the bear, balanced a few moments, and fell back down again. "She wouldn't have been able to catch us anyways, we're much too quick."

Pausing, her nose twitched, and a strong smell came bobbing along on the breeze. She smiled and said, "Laz, do you smell that? It smells like those elk we're supposed to be finding!"

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus snorted with laughter, Her? The black wolf had never thought of bears, or any animals, as conscious and reasonable animals like wolves were. Although, now that he thought of it… there was that fox Joseph who was as aware as any wolf. Hmmm he supposed he had never thought about it. He guessed the bear could have genders in the way that wolves do. After all, they had to have cubs. He wondered if girl bears and boy bears were different in other ways too. Did bears have masculine and feminine voices in bear language, like in wolf language, he wondered?

He drew back his head as Eden reared up on hind legs, pawing at the air and imitating the bear, “Heh! Terrifying!” the young male cried out loud, leaping forward to swipe at her playfully.

He perked his ears as Eden mentioned a scent. He breathed in the scents. He hadn’t noticed, but he’d be damned, there it was! He grinned, his silver eyes flicking to Eden, “Hm, what’d you know! There is it!” This was good, now no one could bug them for not doing their job! Lazarus trotted in the direction of the scent. Once they located the herd they could head back and let the pack know. Then hopefully relaxation time!

..EDEN..

"Yes, her," responded Eden. "She was fat with cubs. Unless all bears are that plump. I normally don't get close enough to find out." She flicked one ear and began to follow the scent. The elk weren't terribly far away, and she eventually spotted them through the undergrowth.

"They've moved into the woods," she mused, "but it doesn't look like there are as many of them as they thought." Doing a mental tally, she saw a lot of females and a few males, with their massive antlers, but certainly not the massive number one pack mate had reported. "Maybe...oh, half of what was reported. But that's still plenty of elk."

She withdraw her head and turned to address Lazarus. "Come on, then. We're in no hurry, but we should start heading back. Especially if we want to have one of these elk for supper one of these nights!"

She bumped her shoulder against Lazarus's and said, "Hopefully this time we don't stumble into a black bear on the return trip!"

..LAZARUS..

Lazarus shrugged. Alright, the bear was a girl. Fine with him! He followed Eden, his mind already far away, planning the rest of his day as Eden took the tallies. His gaze flicked toward the herd, “Mhm,” he said at her conclusions. There was dinner!

He gave her a playful glare, then braced himself to spring forward in a full out sprint. “Heh, it’d have to catch us first! Last one back’s a rotting fish!”
