Description

SFW version: fav.me/dawncns

A really common mistake that even experienced artists make is not matching the pelvis with the rest of the body, causing the appearance of a broken spine. I've done this myself many times!

The spread legs pose, whether squatting or sitting is one of the most difficult to get right. Here's some studies I did with breakdowns for things to watch out for.

I drew a little strip of pubic hair to give an extra visual queue to the direction of the pelvis.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Sitting with good posture in a chair will look like the top left example.

The reason I mention that the hips will tip back "at rest" is because of the S-curve of the spine. So if someone's back is "straight", or in better words neutral, the pelvis will not be straight up and down. This is true whether sitting, standing, or lying down.

Yes those creases will eventually show up even if the character/person has very little bodyfat. The skin itself is folding.

MASCULINE HIP STRUCTURE:
For people wanting to draw a more masculine or androgynous figure, the concept is the same. You just have to keep in mind the different shape of the pelvis. Dimorphism between pelvis shapes starts as early as the womb though most noticeable changes occur during puberty. This is caused by multiple factors, including hormone exposure/production as well as environmental and genetic influence. Anyway, keep in mind that there is a lot of variation regardless of what genitals are there. Here's an article about some of the differences between 'android' (traditionally masculine/heart shape) and 'gynecoid' (traditionally feminine/oval shape) skeletal structure:

Hope this helps you! If I got anything wrong let me know.

KrisCrash's tutorial (found on HF and FA). This is NSFW as it includes (very simplified) images of penetration, but it is still a good guide, showing how the genital area is influenced by the pelvic bone. Send me a note if you are of age and would like help finding it.

Rinayun's breakdown of the inner thigh muscles (found on HF). This one shows just anatomical nudity, and really helps point out the placement of the gracilis and adductor longus muscles. However, I can't link to it here. Send me a note if you are of age and would like help finding it.

Ugh its really annoying that I can't change around stuff in my folders right now. I hope that's a temporary thing going on and not a permanent change.
