Supersaurus lourinhanensis skeletal reconstruction

Description

Supersaurus lourinhanensis ("Super reptile from Lourinha") is a mid-sized diplodocid from the Late Jurassic Lourinha Formation in Portugal. Closely related to the giant Morrison diplodocid Supersaurus vivianae, it is much smaller in size than its North American cousin, with a proportionally shorter neck.

It was originally described as a separate genus, Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis ("Dinheiro reptile from Lourinha"), but Tschopp and Mateus' 2015 specimen-level analysis of diplodocoids found it to be too similar to S. vivianae to warrant a separate genus (well, unless you're a taxonomic splitter, that is, genericometers are rather subjective in the end), separated by 11 diagnostic characters.

Missing portions of the skeleton are restored based on Supersaurus vivianae, Kaatedocus, and DiplodocusParts with insufficient data or mentioned only in text are in light grey.

Reconstructed dimensions
  • Hip height: ~2.87 metres
  • Back height: ~3.47 metres
  • Shoulder height: ~3.18 metres
  • Total height: ~8.1 metres
  • Standing length: ~17 metres
  • Axial length: ~19.74 metres

Wouldnt the neck be held lower? since that is the case with most if not all Diplodocines?
