The Familiar Townson

Description

A Familiar Dragon who has so many fairy Godchildren that he needs to keep a great big ledger just to remember all of their names. He's kind of a dinosaur and whenever he stops into Dunkin Donuts, employees and customers alike stop and stare. The wizarding community find him unimpressive at first, fairies are wary of the big lug. Small children clamber on him for piggy back rides.

First Impression

    ·         Name is Townson

    ·         Age is in suspended animation

    ·         To sum it all up, Townson is a familiar for hire. Not everyone can afford the upkeep of a personal, private, familiar. That is why people summon up Townson. You create a shape, preferably a nice roomy circle, surround it with the needed things to summon the familiar you want and then call the familiar’s name. They strike a deal as bargain for the job and then either release or not release the barrier containing the familiar after negotiations are made. From then until the end of the task the familiar works solely for the summoner and everything hinges on the rules of the bargain and the summoner’s customer satisfaction rate.

    ·         Culture: People don’t believe in magic. There are monsters who go bump in the night and harm others, sometimes it’s the familiar’s job to go up against those that do harm to their customers. Townson is in the phone book and magazine ads on how to summon him. While Townson is a dragon he’s a very funny looking dragon. People expect what they want to see based on monster movies and fantasy mass media. Townson, until they get to know him, is a downgrade from your typical summoned familiar.

Loves

    ·         Family has a lot of Godchildren from over the years. The list of godkids is long enough he has to pull out a huge ancient book and look them up in a list. However, the ones who have summoned him the most are lonely children or people who can’t afford pets.

    ·         Friends with humans and non-humans alike. They have a similar working relationship of workers saying hi during the switching of workshifts. These aren’t always real close relationships but Townson greatly values his friends and found family.

    ·         Hates working with/for fairies. They have a daft understanding of mortals. They see humans as pets/playthings. Nothing against them but they are in many ways, while very magically astute, ironically stupid when it comes to interacting with plain old Everyday things.

    ·         In his love life, he had a female mate who had children. They died and with it so did his chance to hold his first baby. One other mate, a fellow, tried to love him the exact same way but they had a falling out. Townson has always wanted to have a family of his own and the boyfriend never wanted kids to begin with but played along because he wanted to make Townson happy. In the end Townson and his second mate parted ways on civil terms. The second mate found a new love that made Townson happy for him. Townson became a familiar and had been blessed with his first “Draconic Godson”. The Fairy Godmothers find Townson to be a weirdo. While lower ranked, wild fey, are afraid of him and hide their bad deeds from him like a shady restaurant fearing the health inspector. Some of the more vindictive royals flaunt their bad deeds in his face because of the protection allotted to them by the royal guard. They learned they hard way that Townson does not tolerate abuse and disrespect along with a discrimination against oppressors.

Uniqueness

    ·         Flaws: a little slow witted, clumsy in cramped spaces, and ultimately quite intimidating to behold. Townson scares away stalkers on the other hand he sometimes uses brute force to get what he wants which is nobly for someone else’s sake usually. He obligation physically interacts with the environment around him in order to help the summoner.

    ·         Grace: Slow and gentle so as not to frighten people. Helpful and caring. Willing to warn clients about the costs of his services so that they don’t hurt themselves and others. Townson has very good control of his strength. His fortitude is something to draw upon. His politeness allows people to get close. He is a man of his word, just not very articulate without brutal honesty.

    ·         Quirk: He’s curious about what’s new and nostalgic for what’s old. His politeness allows people to get close. He is a man of his word, just not very articulate without polite honesty. Due to poor word choices, those who learn about their faults/mistakes from him are truly insulted by what he decides to say. He however tries not to be meaningfully violent. He’ll ask first 3x before doing something he knows is stupid.

    ·         Cardinal Sin: Envy-He sometimes and used to get jealous of parents with kids because that’s something he can never have again. However, then he counts his blessings so he doesn’t feel so jealous anymore. While his godchildren aren’t related to him by blood. They are still considered his children. He even extends these paternal instincts to clients and children of his clients though it makes him look quite undignified to the Familiar Courts eventually. Especially when the little kids want to play “Pony”

    ·         MBTI: ESFP-Sociable, Practical, Friendly, Caring, Expressive, Open, Patient seeking, Spontaneous, Resourceful, Adaptable, Hands-on, Generous, Gregarious.

I am very happy with this guy's overall design. I mean I first got inspired by the Dinosauroid Theory a paleontologist put out. Then got to thinking, what if I did my own twist. A big Gorilla Dragon. Sadly wings just look silly on Townson because he's too heavy to fly without looking like a graceful rock. Heck, the tail and fin going from his head to tail tip is from an Oarfish, look up the River Monsters TV show about diving with Oarfish, they are gorgeous. The head came from a sauropod dinosaur because smoke won't go up his nose if his nostrils are between his eyes. The rest of him was based on a gorilla build. Lots of anthropromorhic characters are bipedal hominids . . . sort of . . . and quadruped has its aesthetics too. At least a Gorilla build of sorts gives him a nifty middle ground and a unique look that speaks "Here comes Townson . . . Intruders will get squeezed . . . with kindness."

Another from Project Comment! Wow, I LOVE all the creative details in the description, as well as the interesting fish/dinosaur/gorilla design. It's clear you put a lot of thought into this!
Usually I'm not a fan of text in visual pieces (as an image should be able to get the point across on its own without words), but here it works fine since it shows something about the character's world and what he does. The lines and colors look clean, and I like how you used different line weights to show volume. But because there's only one strong light source surrounded by darkness here, I feel like much more of the character should be shaded to better ground him in the environment. Also, be careful with light directions. The light from below should affect the shading much more than the glowing orbs on the sides since it's much brighter. And you might try a greater range of colors and values to bring more depth to the background, as well as going over the rim of the portal with a soft brush to make the effect look more natural rather than mechanical lines produced by a computer. Finally, kind of a nit-pick, but the watermark's a little distracting. What I usually do in cases like this is sign my name (as handwriting is harder to forge) in one of the picture's more-detailed areas so it'd be hard for a thief to paint over successfully. Or you could simply lower the opacity; that works too. Overall, it's a pleasant-looking image! Hope this helps!
