Description

:icondespair-roulette:

"She wanted this. She wanted the group to stay together, because life outside a group was boring. The good stuff only happened when she was part of something bigger than herself."

-Zeroes, Scott Westerfeld, Deborah Biancotti, and Margo Lanagan

Name: Willemina "Mina" Meijer
Gender: Female (she/her)
Age: 17
Height: 5'5"

Title: Party Host
Her talent is hosting parties: planning them, making them interesting, publicizing them, and making sure they're fun for everyone who shows up. She understands that the best parties are dependent on the atmosphere, so she's a master at selecting the right music, venues, food, guests, themes, etc. While the party is happening, she knows just how to make people feel welcome (if they're willing to enjoy themselves, that is), and usually knows how to get others to mesh well with the crowd.

Personality:
+ [Bubbly | Kind | Empathetic | Optimistic]
= [Extroverted | Visionary | Self-Sacrificial | Distant]
-  [Superficial | Self-destructive | Reckless | Cliquey]

Mina had always sought to become the life of the party, no matter what. She is drawn to people, mostly positive people since they're the ones who uplift her mood, and does what she can to keep that positive energy going. Her mood matches that of the people around her. Whereas she thrives in crowds, she doesn't engage much with smaller groups, in one-on-one conversations (although she is capable of brief small talk), and certainly not when she's alone. When this happens, she will actively seek out more people to bring into the conversation so she feels more comfortable. As such, it's fairly difficult to get to know her on a personal and intimate level. And even among larger groups of people, she feels mostly comfortable with a particular kind of personality, and has a tendency to unwittingly shut off people who don't fit with the kind of mood that she wants.

While planning things, she is very methodical and is a bit formulaic in how she goes about in planning. Naturally, she has a tendency to start with big ideas, but has trained herself to narrow things down to make them more plausible. This sets her up for disappointment when her original exciting ideas are proven impossible though, and often times she internalizes her inability to pull off particularly large stunts as a fault on her part. She prefers to ignore whatever she's dealing with, instead focusing on other people and the positivity that they bring.

When it comes to on-the-spot decisions, she can be very impulsive and doesn't make the healthiest decisions. However, she will do what she feels is the best for other people, regardless of the consequences that it'll bring to her. Occasionally, she can be hypocritical in that she will try to stop people's self-destructive behaviors, while engaging in them herself. She cares a lot about the people around her, despite her difficulties with connecting with them on a personal level, and ultimately wants to see everyone--including herself--become happier people.

Background:
Birthday parties were always Mina's favorite when she was younger. They always existed solely to have fun, at least at that age they did, and the feeling of that sense of community and unity had always stuck with her, and parties were so often filled with people who simply wanted to be happy, even for that moment. From that moment on, she always sought for the best parties, extending her social graces to whoever she believed would have great parties. Despite her ulterior motives for making friends throughout her life, she was always genuine in her kindness to others.

She grew dissatisfied with simply waiting around for the next party to come up, not to mention that many of the parties that she'd been going to seemed to appear lackluster as she experienced more and more of them. So she decided to start having her own. She tried and gave up many times at first, unable to accomplish what she had envisioned, but every time she went to a party she would think about what she could do to improve it, and then apply that to the fantastic party idea that only existed in her fantasies, one that shifted constantly as she grew older and the standards for parties changed. No longer were they restricted to birthdays, but became more general get togethers.

Until finally at around the age of 13, she thought she had it figured out, and she started to set the plan into motion. It took many months for her to put it together, and quite a lot of effort for her to drum up interest for the party by advertising it and encouraging people to bring others along, but when it finally happened it was a hit. People talked about it for days, but most of all, she felt a thrilling rush of excitement because everyone else had enjoyed themselves. And yet, she wasn't quite satisfied, because there were so many things that could have went better. She loved the thrill of it though, so she kept on throwing more parties and tweaking the things she didn't like about her last one, while changing up themes and target audiences for her parties as she grew older and garnered more attention.

Because she had thrown herself into planning and throwing parties, her schooling had been heavily affected by it, and she was frequently scrutinized for being a poor student. Receiving much criticism for this, she made active efforts to simply forget that it was a responsibility that she had, instead throwing herself into crowds of people. Because if they were all okay, then so was she. Unfortunately, every time she went out, the crowds would eventually dissipate, leaving her wishing that she had used her time to do something that the people around her would actually approve of.

As this cycle continued, she became more aggressive in her attempts at pursuing escapism from life's responsibilities and from her own self-loathing, and as she fell into a downward spiral, she stopped hoping that she'll be able to please everyone, instead throwing herself wholeheartedly in the only thing that could make her feel something these days, which were her parties. She almost flunked school on more than one occasion, but when Hope's Peak recognized her talents in hosting parties, she had to make an especially difficult push to get good enough grades to attend the prestegious high school, just so she could be rewarded for the thing she loved to do. Besides, it would secure that she would be at least okay if she went. Attendence would prove that she was the best at what she did, and she clung onto that promise of affirmation for long enough to pull herself together, at least temporarily.

And when she was finally able to do it, she threw a huge party to celebrate.

Script: Mina: *tugs on her bracelet and glances up* "So... we're just going to look around here? I can do that, but someone's gotta come with me." *points at two others* "We're going to go that way."
Paragraph:
Every new place has its own party potential, and as Mina stepped onto the campus of Hope’s Peak Academy, she had already started scoping out where a possible punch bowl would be. She had been one of the first to arrive on campus, driven by her desire to meet up with new people, but had failed to realize that by showing up early she would end up isolating herself. Only nerds came to school early, and nerds were not the ideal company for her. Her fingers twitched as she reached for her water bottle--which wasn't filled with water at all, but stopped herself. She needed to look like she was a functioning person for one day, even if she wasn't going to get caught. But one sip couldn't hurt. Besides, it helped her forget her anxieties, and oh boy, did she have them on that first day.
