Truly, Wish didn't know why she felt such an attachment to her father. It wasn't as if she'd ever met him - Felicity had been the one to hatch her egg, keeping her warm in the nursery of the ranch's cabin. Yet, as Juggernaut spoke of her father, she found herself listening to every word hungrily, wanting to learn everything she could about him. She wanted to know that he wasn't the kind of Pokemon everyone else seemed to believe he was... that he never meant to cause any of this to happen.

If she didn't believe in him, who at Stardust Snowfields would? Even Felicity's faith seemed to waver, at times.

"He could be arrogant, sure... but he's not a bad Pokemon. I know he isn't." Juggernaut nodded firmly, giving Wish a look of reassurance. "You must love him a lot too, to have so much faith in him."

"I-I..." Wish glanced down at her paws. "I do. I never got the chance to meet him, so that might seem odd, but... I always try to see the best in everyone, no matter who they are. And I want my father to know that, when he comes back, he has someone in Stardust Snowfields that will stand by him regardless of what the others say."

"I'll stand by him too!" Juggernaut promised, stepping forward and touching his nose to Wish's head. "Y'know, he's lucky to have a daughter like you. I'm sure when he comes back, he'll think the same thing once he gets to meet you."

Wish looked up at him, smiling against the ache in her heart. "...Thank you, Uncle Juggernaut. I'm really glad I got to meet you today. I promise, if we hear word from my father, or if he comes home, I'll tell you as soon as I can."

Juggernaut grinned. "Thanks. I really do appreciate it. I... I guess we'll head back, then." He seemed to falter a bit, as if he wanted to believe Travis would suddenly come over the hill then and there and finally put their worries to rest. "C'mon, Thatch. We should get back."

"I-I'd love to visit you sometime anyway!" Wish blurted out suddenly, hoping to lessen the sadness in his expression somewhat. "At Nebulous Haven! If that's okay, of course."

"Oh, of course! We'd be glad to have you visit." Juggernaut had already started to walk away, but he glanced at her over his shoulder. "I hope we'll see you again soon, Wish!"

Wish lifted one paw to wave goodbye as they left through the ranch's entrance, sighing heavily as they disappeared from view. "I hope I'll have news to bring him about father when I do." She looked up at the sky, watching the stars glitter above.

"Leave us! NOW!"

A sudden shout from down the hill caused Wish to jump a little, her ears pricking up in alarm. What was that about? Her eyes grew wide. Was that her grandmother Felicity's voice?

Quickly, she rushed down the hill, toward a couple of ranch residents below. A dark shape had broken away from the gathering, racing away toward the lake in the distance, and Wish gasped. Were more Pokemon leaving, just like Velouria and her group did? "Wait! Stop!" Wish cried.

Abruptly, the shape stopped, hesitating as her voice echoed over the hills. However, Felicity surged forward, ready to attack the figure and causing it to continue running. Sliding the rest of the way down the hillside, Wish panted, trying to catch her breath. "G-Grandmother! What's going on?!"

Felicity's tail was bushed out, the fur on her spine spiked up in anger. Kamui, her daughter and Wish's aunt, was starting wide-eyed at her mother close by, ears tilted back in shock. Once Felicity realized Wish was there, she let out a sharp breath, glancing at her with a guilty expression. "Wish! Oh, little one, I'm so sorry... I didn't want you to see me like that..." She stepped a little closer, but Wish couldn't keep from flinching away. "Please, forgive me."

"W-what was..." Wish tried to find the words to speak. "Did... Did another Pokemon leave...? Did you chase them away?"

"Oh, no no no, sweetie - that Pokemon wasn't one of ours." Felicity quickly tried to explain herself. "He came to us, spouting nonsense about bloodlines and legacies... Awful, rude things. If he pretends to know so much about us, how could he say such things expecting us to understand his view?!"

Felicity obviously didn't seem to be a fan of whatever he had been telling them. Kamui however, Wish noticed standing behind Felicity, looked troubled and conflicted, her draconic tail flicking against the snow. "I... I'm sorry, Grandmother. I had no idea."

"No, darling, I'm the one who should apologize. You were having such a nice visit with your uncle..." She sighed, turning away and heading toward the cabin. "I'm going to wait for Ayano to come back. I need to discuss this with her..."

As Felicity moved further out of earshot, Kamui watched her go before facing Wish. Her rose-colored eyes held some mix of emotions Wish couldn't place. "Wish, I... uh... may I ask you to do something for me?"

"What kind of something?"

"I... I want you to find that stranger. The one who my mom just chased off." She frowned. "I'd like to speak with him more, about what he was saying. Can you tell him that... not everyone on the ranch agrees with Felicity?"

What? Kamui didn't agree with her mother's opinion? Although Wish still didn't know exactly what they were in disagreement about, she found herself nodding after a moment's hesitation. "What... was he saying? Why did Grandmother get so angry?"

"That stranger, he... he asked us if we wanted to be part of the legacy he was going to create. That he was going to make this ranch a better place after what's happened." Kamui sighed. "Obviously, Mom didn't agree with him. But... I don't know. Part of me wants to hear more of what he has to say."

Wish couldn't deny that she was curious now. After all, didn't everyone's opinion matter? That was what she always believed, anyway.

"Okay. I'll go find him."

~~

Following the stranger's trail, Wish found, was easier than she had first thought. He had left a noticeable trail of footprints behind him, as if he wanted to be found, and she followed it closely until she found herself in territory she'd never been to before. Sometimes, she was still overwhelmed by just how big Stardust Snowfields was.

But, abruptly, the trail stopped on the shore of a vast, frozen lake. As Wish skidded to a halt, she furrowed her brow, glancing around. Had he run across the lake's surface?

"You are someone I have not yet seen before."

Wish jumped as a voice spoke from somewhere close by, and she whipped herself around. Behind her stood the stranger she had seen Felicity chasing away - from the white and blue mask to his blue-striped striped pelt, soft, cloudy tails swishing together as he sat watching her. "H-how did you..."

"Yes, we have not met. Now I am certain." The strange Pokemon nodded. "Yet, perhaps this first impression is different from the rest. Fate has other plans for us instead."

He seemed almost... excited? Happy? If the lightheartedness of his tone was anything to go by, at least.

"W..." Wish didn't feel particularly threatened by this stranger, but she still tilted her head at how relaxed he seemed at speaking to someone who could've potentially tried to hurt him... if she was more like the others. "Who... are you, exactly?"

Coming closer, the blue fox enigma bowed his head to her. Was he trying to be respectful? Why do the others seem to think he's planning something against us? So far, he had proven to her that he was no one to fear. In fact, it had been a long time since Wish had felt so relaxed around another Pokemon. But why?

"My name, miss, is Inari. You're the only one I've been able to share my name with, thus far." The way he cocked his head made Wish realize he was being playful. "But I believe you're someone I can trust with it."

What? Does that mean that he trusts me? Wish hesitated, but Inari nodded, as if he could sense the inner confusion she was currently feeling. "Your eyes."

"My... eyes?"

"They're bright and full of life. They bring warmth to my heart like a ray of sunshine on a wilted rose." His tails swished behind him, wagging a bit like an excited puppy's. "You hold no desire to bring harm to others. That's what your eyes tell me. Which is why I can trust you with my name."

"A-ah. I... I see." Wish wasn't sure if that was a compliment or not, but her face burned just the same. "Well... My name is Wish. You're... a very interesting Pokemon, Inari. But the others believe that you do want to harm us. If they came across us talking right now, they could drive you off... no matter what I try to do to stop them."

"And why would they do that?"

"I-I'm not sure." The more she thought about it, the more Wish realized that she really didn't realize why they distrusted him so much. "They... They don't like what you've proposed. Legacies are the whole reason why the split happened in the first place - oh, but you weren't around for that..."

Inari's focus continued to stay on Wish, to the point she felt compelled to tell him more. "There was a fight, between my father - Travis - and another resident of the ranch named Ayano. H-he wanted to be the strongest Pokemon here, but he made a mistake and ended up almost... Ayano fell into a coma, and my father ended up leaving the ranch without saying a word to anyone. He still hasn't come back... he hasn't even sent word to us about how he's doing. But, because me and other members of his family refused to leave, the others decided to leave us instead."

Wish didn't notice how tense her body had become until Inari approached her, sitting beside her and placing a scarf hand on her back. She jerked up and stared at him, feeling her heart pound at how close he'd suddenly become. "They hate you for the legacy you already hold within, hm?"

"I..." Wish sighed deeply, her ears drooping. "I guess that they do."

It hurt, to think that the others hated her and refused to trust her, simply because of who her father was. She still loved them all deeply, and wished the best for them, but the fact that they would never feel the same way about her felt like a cold shard of ice in her heart, even more frigid than the snow on the lakeshore.

"Don't you see? This is exactly why I want to create a legacy, here!" Inari gestured out to the frozen lake, and the cave just beyond the opposite shore. "A place where Pokemon like us can be proud and unafraid to be who we are."

We could... be proud? But something about his words caught Wish's attention. "Pokemon 'like us'? What do you mean, Inari?"

Although Wish could not see Inari's expression under the mask, the tilt of his ears and the way his tails went limp in the snow told her what he felt. "You have family, yes? I... never had anything like that." He admitted, his tone completely different from how he had been speaking thus far. "Hatched from an egg, a strange creature no one cared for. I lived as wanderer, drifting from place to place, in search of home. A home that I did not have."

"Inari, that's..." Wish trailed off.

"It was all I could think about: finding a home, and creating a family to be proud of. Assure that no members of my family would ever feel isolated and alone, as I did." Inari lifted his head, facing the starry sky. "That is all I wish to do. That is what I want you to understand."

To never feel isolated... and alone? Wish felt as though she had been stricken by his words. They really were more alike than she had previously thought.

"Inari I... do understand." Wish murmured. "So does Kamui. She's my aunt, the Eevee with wings you saw with my grandmother. She... wanted me to come find you."

"Did she now?" Inari sounded completely surprised. "Hm... then perhaps my search is over."

"Are you... staying here?"

Inari nodded, pointing his muzzle toward the cave on the other side of the lake. "I am residing in that cave. It's quite a lovely place, when you take the time to make it comfortable." He then turned to Wish inquisitively. "What are you going to do?"

What was she going to do now? Wish shuffled her paws. "I... I haven't yet decided."

But Inari nodded sympathetically. "Please, do not feel as though I'm pressuring you into a decision. But I would be glad to have you and Kamui join me here."

"We'll meet you at your cave soon. I'm sure Kamui is spreading word of you right now, so don't be surprised if more residents show up than just me and her." Wish dipped her head to him before heading back up the slope. She paused, however, to give Inari a glance over her shoulder. "...Thank you. In a way... your proposal has made me feel a little better about what's happening. The others might think you're causing trouble among us, but... I'll stand by you too."

Inari's tags began to wag again - for a moment, Wish wondered if he got into the habit of showing his emotions in such body language due to his mask. "I very much appreciate the gesture, Wish. I hope to see you again, soon."

As they parted ways, Wish found herself wondering if maybe she had found the place she'd been searching for all along.

I think Inari seems sweet, (Unless he's secretly a devilsh little brat and is luring them into a trap)
