Code Blue

Description

 - In American hospitals, when a staff member says "CODE BLUE": It means a patient is dying.

 - - Urban legend: The alert was derived from the fact that if someone can not breath, while they are still alive, they turn blue.

Continued from: Stick a Fork in Him He's Done…

Madison and Joey looked to Xenovia for the next move, they knew what came next, all they needed was to coordinate it. The captan nodded her head. Xenovia released the drowning man, and swam away from him, taking her speargun back from Joey. As for Joey, she had already extended her left arm to Xenovia, the gun’s handle outward, then she too moved up and away from the dying enemy. Madison, like the others moved back two meters and up one, while shifting the handle of her gun to her right hand. With three spearguns pointing down at him, they could all enjoy the show.

At this point there could be a problem, sometimes dying people do desperate things.

The A-Ds concern: he may try to attack them for their air supplies.

If he did that, the A-Ds had two options.

One: Shoot their spears into him. This was not the optimal solution.

Two: Just swim up. With their fins they could easily stay ahead of him, (very - very easily in fact).

That is why they will stay at least one meter above him. If the A-Ds aim down, there will be no risk of shooting each other.

Lucky for the A-Ds, he did the typical thing, he started swimming up to the surface.

'We are giving him a sporting chance.' Xenovia thought, while softly kicking her long powerful legs, keeping just above him, the other two did the same. In her thoughts, Xenovia had said, it was a 'sporting chance', she (and all A-D’s) knew it was a lie.

While inhaling and exhaling seawater, the man began kicking wildly, flailing his arms, like he was climbing an invisible ladder,. He was two meters above sea bottom when he stopped kicking. He instantly fell like a rock back to the bottom. The A-Ds knew that when someone's lungs are filled with water, they become 'negatively buoyant', they will always sink. Once again he started kicking and 'climbing', three meters this time. Air (for him, the A-Ds were not sharing theirs), was still another six meters up, it may as well be on the moon.

Xenovia thought: 'Still alive, If we help him up to the surface now, he could be saved. - If, the saddest word.'

When he hit the bottom for the last time the A-Ds had the same thought. 'CODE BLUE'. The man was now blue all over, he went into convulsions while reaching upwards toward the surface. Then he stopped moving, he did not collapse to the floor, he just froze arms still raised.

Two days later.

A body of a naked man washed ashore on the beach of an island, one frequented by tourist. As is the standard procedure for these occurrences, the police were called. Half the local department had showed up, to help the only detective and medical examiner with the investigation, this involved keeping onlookers away from the scene. The Police Chief and Mayor were there too, making sure everything was preformed correctly. The owners of the local resorts would insist on a thorough investigation, then they would strongly suggest that the death be ruled an accident. Anything else would be bad for business. When the M.E. had finished her work, she gave a verbal report to the gathering of civic officials.

"Any first year medical student would look at the body and say drowning, probably accidental." It had been thirty-five years since she was a first year med student, she had noted abrasions to the testicles, and light bruising around the lower abdomen. But nothing else. She was thinking about relaying this information to the gentlemen, when the detective walked over to give his preliminary report. He made it short and to the point, just the way the chief liked it.

"We know who he is. A concierge at his hotel recognized the body. The last time they spoke was two days ago, the deceased had asked about the nude beach. Then he went out to his rental car and drove off. The car is in our impound lot, it was towed two nights ago, from the parking lot of the aforementioned nude beach. That would explain why he was naked."

The relief on the faces of the officials was apparent to the investigators. A nude body washing ashore was problematic. Now it all seem so plausible. The Mayor asked about notifying the next of kin. The detective said the only contact information the deceased gave his hotel was that of his employer, maybe he had no family. The Mayor and Chief were more relived, maybe no family members banging down their doors, demanding justice. They also noted the detective referred to the body as 'the deceased' not 'the victim'. They now looked with hope to the M.E. She repeated what she said earlier 'accidental drowning.'

The investigators said they would finishing writing their reports this afternoon, there would be no surprises. Everyone would be happy.

The M.E. walked away thinking. 'Three more years till retirement.'
