Hello, lovely people! So glad to have you stop by! This is a repost of the original feature since I deleted it by mistake. The staff couldn't help me with restoring it so this is me recreating it from memory and not everything will be the same, but all the artworks are here.

For this feature I had the help of Yuukon, MarcosRodriguez and JustACapharnaum who are all passionate supporters of and contributors to the photography community.

Technically a Macro photograph shows a subject that is life size compared to the size of the negative of a SLR or sensor in a Full Frame DSLR, that's a 1:1 reproduction ratio aspect. For example, if we take a macro of an object which is 35 mm long, it will cover the whole frame, no matter what size the reproduction, if we are shooting with a Full Frame camera. Often a ratio aspect of 1:2 is also considered Macro, although that ratio shows subjects whose life size is half of the size compared to the negative or sensor, I prefer to call those pictures Close-up photographs.
Technical aspects aside, Macro photography for me is the way we can show to the world the tiny treasures that surround us and that we often do not pay attention to.

To me, macro photography is an important side of photography. During the analog times, it was something that took a lot of gear, time and even courage to get things right, thankfully, in our digital time, macro photography has become a lot more accessible to everybody. Macro photography is a true representation, also known as 1:1 scale, of a subject. Macro photographs often shows details you cannot see with the naked eye, which is what makes it so intriguing to me. There are so many things in our daily life that we pass by without giving it another thought, yet those things can be so insanely beautiful if you just know how to look at it. That's what macro photography is to me. A different, beautiful way to look at things.

-> What is macro photography?
Macro photography is a photography speciality. Technically speaking, true macro requires a 1:1 ratio or higher, meaning a life-size depiction of a subject on the camera’s digital sensor (or film). So if, for instance, you are photographing a subject that is 5mm long, this subject shall appear as the same size or greater on your camera's sensor (or film). If it appears smaller than the subject, then it is a close-up photography. That's for the strict definition of macro.
More generally speaking, macro is about capturing details not visible to the naked eye.
Everything and anything is macro material: objects, fabrics, animals, insects, liquids, people, as long as the photos are magnified enough to see the intricate details.

-> Why are people passionate about it?
I can't talk for the others, but from my personal experience, I love macro because it is to me a form of contemplation of my surroundings. Without macro existing, we wouldn't know how beautiful snowflakes can be, how just a leaf or fabrics can be so detailed with their intricate patterns, how an eye can be so mesmerizing, how liquids can come to life or how insects have such complex shapes! Macro photography is used for science, but not only: it is used for art too: to display the gorgeousness and the complexity of our environment.

Why I love macro photographyIn case you haven’t noticed it yet, I may have an interest in macrophotography :paranoid:
First of all, here is a definition, by MarcosRodriguez of macro photography: "A Macro photograph shows a subject that is life size compared to the size of the negative of a SLR or sensor in a Full Frame DSLR, that's a 1:1 reproduction ratio aspect. […] Often a ratio aspect of 1:2 is also considered Macro, although that ratio shows subjects which life size is half of the size compared to the negative or sensor, I prefer to call those pictures Close-up photographies." (quote from here)
But why do I love it so much? In order to answer that question, I asked for the help of some other macro lovers:

Because it makes you discover a wh

In this article, I will decipher some common misconceptions about Macro photography and its DA subcategories. Hopefully, this will help you have a better understanding of what macro photography is and its subtleties!
What is macro photography?
Macro photography is a photography speciality. Technically speaking, macro photography isn't a magnification but a true representation. I found a quote a couple of years ago that defines macro photography that I am particularly fond of for its clarity:
