Weathervane, The Storm Sorcerer
Real Name:
Dennis "Denny" Franklin
Powers: Can sense & predict weather patterns, but he has to be out in the open to be able to sense them.
Equipment: The Rod of Yjungr - An almost indestructible magic rod that allows the user to gain the physical might of a god & the power to manipulate the esoteric weather, such as using the wind to achieve Aerokinetic Flight. First Appearance: Deviantart (4/18/2018)

Origin (W.I.P.)
(-"
Dennis Franklin, a man with a passion for keeping his friends, family and his hometown safe with his job as one of the town's night watchmen, his constant vigilance and dedication to his job was well known throughout the former coal-mining town of Stonyburg, NY, though while he is well liked, some of the town's citizens would call his vigilance an unhealthy amount of paranoia due to Dennis having a habit of immediately suspecting any criminal activity he'd find while on his patrols.

Though during one stormy night while on patrol, a flaming object bursted through the clouds and landed near Dennis' car, almost causing him to swerve into a tree. When Dennis finally stopped his car and got out to see what crashed, he walked over to the crater with a flashlight in hand, seeing that the object that fell wasn't a meteorite like he initially thought. While some of the object was buried into the dirt, Dennis could see that the object had a long, gray handle sticking out of it with a leather loop on the end.

Something at the back of Dennis' mind compelled him to take hold of the handle. With both that and his curiosity getting the better of him, Dennis reached out and grasped the now cooled handle with both hands. He felt something go from his hands and up his arms, like a gentle surge of electricity, but it wasn't enough for him to release his grip; and with one mighty pull, the object was freed from the ground.

Using his flashlight, Dennis examined the object, seeing that it reminded him of a slightly heavier scepter of some kind what with the large, but somewhat flattened jewel on the front end and the goldish metal holding it in place. Since it was getting close to sunrise with fatigue finally setting in, Dennis returned to his home in the woods outside of town, bringing the object back with him.

When he returned home, his little black pug still sleeping in her little bed like before he left, he changed out of his damp clothes & into his leisure attire, which was a pair of grey sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt depicting an album cover from the band, Lorehammer. He went up to his room, placed the scepter on his desk and collapsed onto his bed, deciding that he will figure out what to do with the scepter after he had his rest.

His dreams during his sleep were more unusual, and much more vivid then they normally were. In this dream, Denny sees a wide canyon during a massive storm that was much more violent the one he was in, having not only thunder and lightning, but it was even creating both a rainstorm and a blizzard with it. However, at one of the canyon's edges, he sees a somewhat burly, but elderly man, dressed in norse-style clothing and armor and an eyepatch over his left eye. He was holding the same sceptre that Denny found, and he raised the sceptre up towards the storm.

Suddenly, the storm surged even more as many lighning bolts started to strike the scepter, with the old man not even flinching as the sceptre actually absorbed the lightning. Then the rain, wind, snow & hail started to stream towards the sceptre, and the sceptre even absorbed all that, though the old man felt the force of this push on him hard, he strained, but he didn't budge. This continued for a full minute until the storm started to calm down. The streams of the storm's fury also started to subside until it was finally done with the storm clouds, while still there, were just gently rumbling at this point. The old man relaxed as he looked at the sceptre, which the jewel on the front end was now glowing.

The image faded away into another one, this one seeming to take place some time after the first part of the dream. The enviorment this time was more hellish, with a red, craggy wasteland with a flame filled sky with what looked like an army of demons running towards the old man from before, who was still holding the sceptre. The man aimed the sceptre at the army and uttered a single word, "Kaldr", resulting in the sceptre's jewel glowing more. A massive wall of freezing wind actually started to blow infront of the man, sweeping across the demonic army and the demons stopped in their tracks, freezing from the wind as ice started to form on their bodies. The old man followed up with another word, "Trymja", resulting in a loud thunderclap to be heard as the soundwave shot forward, plowing a straight line through the army and knocking away much of the enemy soldiers.

The old man then raised the sceptre up high as storm clouds formed up above and covered the flame-covered sky. And with one loud bellow,"Trymja Dreppas!" resulting in multiple lightning bolts strike the ground below and decimated much of the army before him. After a few more seconds, the old man cleared the storm. The demons that weren't struck down and recovered from the freezing turned around and ran away. The old man turned away from the fleeing forced before he shouted one more spell, "Vindr" which cause the wind around him to pick up, actually causing him to get lifted off the ground and he flew away.

The image faded again and it into another scene. This one was much more intense then the previous two, as it looked like the old man was in another battle, but he had someone else by his side. It was another man dressed similarly, but he had red hair and a matching beard, holding what looked like a hammer that crackled with electricity. That's when Denny realized the old man's identity; It was Odin, king of the norse gods, who was fighting along with his son, Thor.

What they were facing was what looked like a massive tornado, throwing large chunks of debris towards the two as they weaved around it. When the twister cleared a bit, Denny noticed that what the two gods were facing was something that looked severely out of place. Something that is more machine then anything fleshy, which to Denny looked more like a helicopter, but the size of a modern cargo ship and made up of copper red-colored, triangular pieces of metal with glowing, yellow parts that constantly shot out lightning bolts towards the two. The machine seemed to be able to handle itself against the two gods, as when either of them tried to use their power over the weather, the machine just countered it with it's own control over the skys.

The two couldn't get closer to the machine as all the debris, hail and blizzards made approach more difficult, until the two combined their powers, calling forth an twister just as large as the automaton's that was surging with lightning, snow, ice and rain. When the two twisters collided, they merged as all the fighters tried to wrestle control over the skys. Though at this time, Odin and Thor were now close enough to the robot to physically attack it. The two tried to pummel into the machine with their weapons, but they could only manage a few blows before the machine's lightning and gusts of wind knocked them away. That's when the two gods finally decided to put all their strength into one final attack, as with one final push, they unleashed one massive bolt of lightining that struck the machine directly, blasting straight through it.

The machine started to sputter as small explosions erupted over it's form. Though the lightning bolt seemed to overcharge it, since it's propeller spun faster and faster, causing the twister to spin out of control, drawing everything around it closer to the malfunctioning unit.

Thor and Odin flew away from the machine, trying to escape the twister's suction, though Odin's grip on the scepter faltered slightly, causing him to lose his grip on the rod. Thor managed to grab Odin's hand before he was fully swept up in the storm, but the scepter was caught and dragged into the tornado. Thor managed to finally pulled himself and his father out of the wind, before the machine inside the tornado finally erupted in a flaming explosion, dispersing the twister.

The scene then shifted to where the rod was before the explosion. As the rod was tumbling in the wind, a rainbow colored portal opened in it's path, causing it to be thrown through. The rod fell through the vortex for a few more minutes before it passed through the exit, into the atmosphere of what looked like Earth, glowing red due to re-entry friction and through another massive storm cloud, the same storm that Denny was in earlier."-)

I apologize again for the lack of content till this point, just one of those times when the creative juices are dry and I'm left staring at several projects that needed to be done, like this one.

Last Year, on the weekend before Halloween, we had a rainstorm that lasted for a day and a half. And as I walked outside as it rained, wearing a recently acquired raincoat to replace my crappy rain poncho, I had the idea of a Captain Marvel/Shazam-mixed-with-Thor Odinson-and-Storm kind of hero. And it wasn't until now I decided to just post the character without the origin, which will be added since I was halfway done with it before I had my creative dryspell involving him.

To give a summation about Weathervane until I get the full origin done, He was a night watchman that patrols his town of Stonyburg, NY when during one stormy night while on patrol, the rod shown here fell from the sky in a fiery comet, crashing near his car while he drove. When he stopped to investigate what crashed, he pulled the rod from the crater which granted him powers over magical weather and essentially becoming a weather god himself. Now there is a lot more to it then that, but I want to keep it short until the origin is completed, which will involve him and his town ending up taken and dropped in, Sargasso.

Edit (4/30/2018): Bout time I give an update to this. Again it's not finished, but I actually have three fourths of the origin done. Also I want to thank BassoeG for giving me the idea of using a certain storm-controlling machine, who will be a major nemesis for Weathervane.

This character was made using Hero Machine 3.

Weathervane is an open source character created specifically for use by anyone. Feel free to use them any way you wish. You must also give creator credit.

Another theory: the Mechanical Storm was designed to imprison and possibly fuel itself via parasitizing the powers of a weather-controlling deity. Vibes of Aliette de Bodard's Prayers of Forges and Furnaces.
